Hello Dakkaites! I need your help to figure out if Drop pods are total crap now or not.

I have yet to determine if units entering play via Drop pods can fire as if they moved or if they must use Snap Fire only. Can someone point out the rule(s) that clarify this? Because if so, I think Drop pod assault lists might just be dead... and my new army project too

Thanks Dakka!

The answer is in the last paragraph on the left hand column on page 36.

It tells you how units that arrive by deep strike act in the shooting phase.

I have found again and again that in encounter actions, the day goes to the side that is the first to plaster its opponent with fire. The man who lies low and awaits developments usually comes off second best. - Erwin Rommel
"For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions, even on important subjects, which I once thought right but found to be otherwise." - Benjamin Franklin

Must have missed it. Thank you, I'll check it when I get my book handy, untill then I'll hope for the best. *crosses fingers*

Edit: Does it adresses how units arriving by deep strike in a transport? I think this is the key element that will make or break drop pods...

(pg. 36) Deep Strike, left column, second to last paragraph.

"In the Movement phase during which they arrive, deep striking units may not move any further, other than to disembark from a deep striking Transport vehicle if they are in one...."

"In that turn's Shooting phase, these units can fire (or Run) as normal, and obviously count as having moved in the previous Movement phase. Vehicles, except for Walkers, count as having moved at Cruising Speed (even immobile vehicles). This can affect the number of weapons they can fire with their full Ballistic Skill (see page 71)."

"In that turn's Assault phase, however, these units cannot charge. This also applies to units that have disembarked from Transports that arrived by Deep Strike that turn."

+ + +

(pg. 71) Moving and Shooting with Vehicles, right column, last bullet:
- A vehicle that moved at Cruising Speed can only make Snap Shots, as above.

+ + +

(pg 78) Fire Points, right column, second paragraph
"...Models firing out of a vehicle that moved at Cruising Speed can only fire Snap Shots that turn..."

============================================================================

From my read, if you have a unit embarked and shooting from a Fire Point of a Transport vehicle that moved at Cruising Speed, then you can only Snap Shot. Normally, a unit cannot disembark from a vehicle if it moved more than 6". However, in the case of a Deep Striking transport, this is a special case. You are permitted to Disembark after the vehicle has moved faster, at Cruising Speed. Once disembarked, and firing from the battlefield, your transported unit will shoot (or run) as normal and are NOT subject to the Snap Shot rule, but it may NOT assault that turn. Note, the Deep Striking vehicle still is subject to the Snap Shot rule as it moved at Cruising Speed.
