The promised Pics.

I started the Chaos Daemons Army last year after a long break from the hobby. The first models to be painted where the Flesh Hounds. I had hard time to set them up as I hate the lead figs (metal is too hard to sculpt and too heavy to paint). But later, the paint job was a pleasure.

Here they are (quite simple) :

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Some weeks after the Flesh Hounds, I started the Bloodletters. But I really wasn't sure how good I could perform with them.
After the pics (some of them have still wet varnish), I discovered that I was completely wrong in the way I sticked the head to the body.

My main satisfaction is the blade. We'll see later that the body was much better for the bloodcrushers.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I then moved to Nurgle troops. And I really enjoyed painting the Plaguebearers command squad.

I used lots of red / green / orange washes with bleached bone brushes. Almost no detailed painting at all.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
With the blast I had with Nurgle's Plaguebearers, I continued with the herald. He's from Warhammer Battle but I consider he can perfectly fit in a WH40K army.

The pictures I saw on the web showing how good it could be painted was stressing me out a bit. So I tried to do what I wanted without looking for something too difficult for me.
I'm not happy with the bronze effects but enjoyed painting the flesh.

Whatever, the model is very nice - whoever is painting a daemon army should consider getting it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Later, I painted some horrors. They are still in progress as I was not equiped, at that stage, with ad hoc pink colors.

But I could focus on the Changelin - not necessary pink. The coat misses some light and the flesh some shadows - the whole model could have been better regarding the color sheme, but I'm quite proud of the flames and the ribbons.

You will notice after this few pictures that I really move from one base color to another : I try to find the base that will suit the model color. So all my bases are belong to me.... erm, I mean, they are all different and that's something I'm proud of - eventhough I don't really design them (base, sand, layer, brush).

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Back to Plaguebearers. I could find 3 more lead models at some far-away-store.

I screwed them a bit. Could'nt remember how I did for the 5 first (the command squad). Still, I like that kind of painting but I really prefer plastic / resin models.

Then I started 2 projects at the same time : my first bloodcrushers and the flameweavers. The models, the color schemes and the techniques are all different. The results too.

The bloodcrushers are models I was not sure I would bought as I really don't like the red juggernauts. When I saw the black / gold version, I showed my credit card. However I can't say I'm satisfied with them (even though I love the riders). The models are not yet stuck and some yellow face-enlightements are not that bright anymore.
The bases are waiting for the light brush.

The flameweavers are great Elite units. And nice to paint. The blue / white blend is not perfect at all but I'm happy with the flame (again). Some difficult stuff: the multiple mouth on top of the fig. Bottom ones are funny.

Last finished model : The Mask.
I tried to learn from my mates when starting the light brushes. I figured out that this works well but still need some glaze. I'm not 100% satisfied with the flesh / skin - I could'nt find exactly the color I could use. I loved painting the hair and the dress; I hate the mini-masks

In progress : 3 more flameweavers, 3 more bloodcrushers.

Later : Tzeentch Sorcerer and Skulltaker

They look good.

And you're right, the fantasy nurgle guy makes a good herald. Consider trying to mount him on a palanquin.

Thanks !
Though I fear that a palanquin would be a personal sculpting / conversion / anything which I would be awfull at :(

I'm done with 3 more flamers.

They have missing arms - not included in that old metal model blister.

Here they are :

The details are nicely done and I like the basing --- neat and consistent.

I'm now done with my first Slaanesh Beasts. I didn't knew which color scheme I wanted. So I started with lots of watered-layers and found out a light purple effect.

Those Flamers and Fiends are quite nice. Sort of impressive with the Fiends as I hate the models, but you made them look a fair bit better.

Loving the Daemons! But now I have to ask (as a Chaos player and painter myself) which type of guys do you enjoy painting the most? I personally favor Nurgle. I love all the shades you can get and all the things you can try out on them! I think out of this whole thread i like your Bearers and the Changeling the most!

Nurgle is a blast for painting !
Khorne is quite easy but you have to be respectfull of many things. The Blood Thirster is coming in.

I've not painted so much of Slaanesh daemons so I can't tell. As for Tzeentch minions, I consider I need a neatier technic.

I've painted some of each.... But I truly enjoy all the ways you can achieve a rotting flesh look and can be difficult to master. I painted an Undead Werewolf for a guy and I loved all the colors and ways to paint them! I think if I were to ever do commission painting it would probably be solely for Nurgle I personally favor the subtle colors as you have pained over the stark/pure greens that some people use.

Looks great! Only two things that i could even attempt to nit pick at: The first is that the base looks a little plain for such a well painted and LARGE daemon to be on. This could be intentional so as to not detract from the model, but it just looks a little bland. Any way you could maybe spice it up a bit? Rubble, bodies etc.? The other would be that the ax head looks a little flat. Maybe some highlighting on the edge? Other than those two little things he looks great!

Thanks Benamint.
Actually I'm not keen on dressing a base. We could argue that the base is part of the fig's story but I can't see any realistic reason why I should show skulls, or a half-eaten Cadachan soldier or whatever sort of stuff.
This daemon can be landing on an virgin land, or rampaging a jungle, he can be in the start / middle / end of a fight, standing victorious on the top of space marine commander, he may also be close to death without any shot given to his ennemy : the flat base will always tell the story I need at any particular moment. The dressed base will only tell one story

You're right, I can do that

Edit : i'm NOT keen

Those are looking great, not too sure why the basing is different on a few of them?
Would be great to see an army shot when they are all together.

3 of them (with missing arms) are metal. 3 others are finecast.

The basing is meant to be fine-tuned with the fig design. While I understand that a single basing scheme would be good for the whole army, i prefer to make it special for every unit.
On the other hand, I don't enjoy scening it - as it makes no sense while playing.
Eventually, man never knows on with table surface the game will be played - then a desert / icy / rock base is just a pure guess.

I love your plaguebearers....great putrid colors and technique. Everything has a relatively clean/crisp look to it. I cant tell if its the camera settings, but your colors are very nice and vivd...especially the bloodletters. The purple swords are a perfect color compliment to the red/orange. Nice work all around
