I've decided to start a new Empire army based on Charles XII's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caroleans of the Great Northern War in the beginning of the 18th Century.
Sooooo, I'll get a battalion box, the new Karl Franz set & a box of Handgunners in two days to go with the stuff I already have.

The setup for the Infantry will be Spearmen and Handgunners with a bunch of Captains thrown into the larger units (40+ blobs), Cavalry will be Pistoliers, Outriders & Knights, and Artillery will have a place here too.

Here's a test model for the Handgunner greatcoats. Every model will have similar Greatcoats and also Tricorne hats (which are a pain in the buttocks to sculpt!).

More to come during the weekend!!

interesting concept... i gather you greenstuffed the GC? and is this then a WHFB army? i so often use the fanatsy stuff for my conversions now that i too easily get confused that someone might actually use it for the intent purpose...

tho one other question... there are a lot of other manufactureres out there that even sell swedish troops of that time line... victrix and perry miniuatures and HAT... have you had a look at these? and if you take a look at these... they might be helpfull to you...

http://hoardobits.com/cgi/hob/shop.pl?cat1=Bits&cat2=Wargames Factory&cat3=-Horse and Musket (28mm)&cat4=&page=&view=WGF-SPANISH-CAV-7
in fact the whole range of wargames factory of that theme might be of use for you...

Yeah, it's an Empire army for Warhammer The coat is handsculpted but lacks the to-be-added detail. And a part of the projects challenge is to convert every model in the army from regular Empire figures, therefore the lack of historical minis.

so you wont use historical bitz either...

well i guess then your GS skills will get honed in this project quite a lot

but i am quite thrilled to see how you do that... how long till you can show the first Tricorne ?

That will be tomorrow, on the head of the Big Man.

Feel free to guess who that is

Got some photos of my first (succesful) Tricorne hat now:

Sorry for the poor quality of the last shot.

That head belongs to Charles XII (or Carolus Rex, hence the project name.) who is going to be the General of the Caroleans.
I'll post some WIP pictures showing the rest of him tonight or tomorrow.

(Sadly, my FLGS did not have a Battalion in stock so that's delayed 'till the 25th of July.)

would you mind showing the untouched head in comparrision if possible?

the tricorne looks really good...and the feathers work like a charm! it really had the air of what you are aiming for... what i would think of now would be a small button or medal...the things sometimes found on tricornes and bicornes...

or a thin brim with lace... just a thin sausage with GS and then some needle stabbing should do!

"Gak, He's know my secret plans! Get me Armfeldt now!!"

Thanks for the approval!

The head is Karl Franz's head from the new kit, with nothing added to it and perhaps 2 mm shaved of the top. Then I just flattened a small ball of GS and put it on the now flat helmet. A minute of folding up the edges as good as possible, followed by an even smaller ball of GS put into the cavity between the folds and Voilá! A Tricorne!
Simple as that, actually.

Slapped on some detail on the hat:

Took the photo at night with a desklamp for light so I sincerely apoligize for any eye damage the horrid quality may have caused

Finished Carolus and his horse yesterday, photos up later today. Got to start on the base, suggestions?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Photo-Heavy Update Time!!

Finished(-ish) Charles XII yesterday night (3 o'clock at night to be precise) and took some photos of him a minute ago and here they are! Be advised, the eyes got fethed up and I'm generally not the best painter in town. The more you know...

C&C Welcome!

not too shabby... no need to short sell your stuff! in fact i think the eyes are rather sad looking but still good looking...

one think tho... most of the colors could do with a wash... for my taste i always do heavy washes... and the horses toes... they could do with a heavier drybrush i think... and please base that model

other that that... crisp looking job! be proud about it!

Now that I think about it, I did only wash the gold parts and face... Back to the desk then!
And don't worry, I'm basing him on a 40x40mm base that should be fine as well.

will he get someone else on that giant of a base then? might feel lonley on such wide space

I've wondered about that and I'm planning on putting: 1) A log, 2) A dead Orc or 3) A pair of Caroleans (Dead or alive) on the base, however, nothing is started or decided yet.

if you ask me... a drummer... and a banner wielder... a horse servant... and maybe if you are feeling adventures...a trumpet guy...

don´t feel the log would look right... also...the orc...hmm... does your main oponent play orcs? otherwise this could look stupid if you are facing chaos or beastmen... and the dead orc is always dragged behind... reminds me of a joke i once saw concerning the terminators of space hulg game... the one that is always showing the backbone of one nid...do you catch my drift?

Sorry for the late reply.

The Banner idea seems rather neat, could put the Army Standard Bearer next to him and field them together in a unit of Knights to create a 12" blob of Ld 9(?) units with re-rolls! MUAHAHAHAAHAHA!!.........Hrm, sorry, Charles took the keyboard from me And that would look nice too.

Sadly I can't work on the army 'till Monday, but I got something good to tell as well. My Battalion will arrive on Wednesday and then I can truly start with the army. And that means large usage of GS and patience (and probably a few bursts of rage and destruction from me).

a sweet times ahead then^^

maybe you should do a pressmould or something for those many tricrones?

Made in se

Perhaps, will have to look around then.

I've been thinking about the heads for the Carolean Handgunners/Spearmen. Historically, they were quite young and therefore did not have much facial hair. Unlike the heads from the Empire range. That gives me a slight headache, regarding what heads I should make Tricornes for. The ones I could remember being young-looking are the Knights Errant from the Bretonnian range and certain Pistolier heads, but that's not nearly enough for an army. Therefore I need help with figuring out what heads I should use. Any assistance is appreciated.

go for catachan heads... dead cheap via ebay or hord of bitz... order them in bulk... or if you want to stay fantasy... militia... and the bretonan armies also are full of younger looking faces... OR... go elves...that shold definatly provide you with endless suply with young looking faces...the tricorn also should cover up the pointy ear issue quite well...

FINALLY (!!) got the Battalion today after a few screwups by Posten (Swedish Mail Service) and GW (Not just 40k rulebooks being shipped late apparently).

Here's the unboxing video from Youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkL-0nkRxCs&feature=plcp

Filmed it at my friend's house 5 minutes after getting back from the store

I'm going to work my arse off tonight in order to get as many as possible done as soon as possible (Take that grammar!)

Haha, thanks!
I've started on the 'Livdrabanterna' (Royal Life Guard Corps) and managed to get 4 bodies & horses ready for the GS so far. They will count as Reiksguard and will accompany Charles & Anders (Army BSB). Photos will be up soon...

You seem to be a man of good musical judgement my friend! I love the Carolean's Prayer!

I'm sorry about the soddy state of my posting, but I have an excuse for once I've been away for a week at a Swedish Military Camp on Väddö Skjutfält, so I haven't been able to do anything with the project for some time now. That, we must change.

On another note, I've been thinking about the setup of the army. The main force will be ordinary Caroleans:

However, I thought that certain more elite regiments could be done with a later uniform, for example the Gustavian Uniform:

Or the oh-so-lovely current parade-uniform used by the Swedish Life Guard:

Opinions?

It's been too long since my last update. School started in late august and I've been busy with that. But I've made some progress these last two days.

Captain of the Spearmen (WIP):

Warrior Priest:

And a little treat for you lot! I redid Carolus XII Rex after looking at pictures depicting him and made him into what he was, a soldier:

Next on my worklist is to finish the Captain and at least twenty Spearmen, then it's on to the Handgunners. Also, I've decided to make two Standard bearers for each regiment, one carrying the Company Banner and one carrying the Swedish Flag. I'll show you when I can.
