Death-Dealing Dark Angels Devastator

I will hopefully be able to keep up with this thread with the updates on progress but one never knows how things will get with work and a kiddo and all. Anyway before I start I wanted to give a little bit of back story. I am creating this army under the pretense of being the disciples of caliban, I like their back story and how secretive they are and also the fact that they are the only chapter to have been requested to be created. They have a seemingly unknown agenda but are so set in their ways that nothing will deter them from their goal.
All that being said my first army was a Dark Eldar army so I was drawn to the Ravenwing and their speed. So long story short I am doing a Disciples of Caliban (Ravenwing) army and am very excited to start this space marine army, especially with the new updates with the 6th edition rule set.

Thank you for the comments without even seeing an actual paintjob. I am having an issue posting my pictures in-line in my post so I am going to re-read the help on the forums and get back to it. I do have a little bit of painting done for my HQ. I will absolutely post some fluff for my army once I get more time because I have tons of ideas flowing around in my head and need to put pen to paper and sort it all out, lol. Also any CC is welcome on how to make the army appear very ornate is welcome. I want them to look very ornate and devout to their cause. The yellow in the picture is going to be either bronze or gold...I am leaning more towards the gold myself but my friend thought that bronze would be a better choice for the metal work.

well i think that, for one thing, decide fluffwise on an army (orks for example) that your army despises and always likes to fight, then you could give them trophys from kills of said hated army, as well as give them specialized/tricked-out weapons for fighting that army. you could also give them the cloaks like the regular dark angels have (amazingly awesome part of dark angels to me) and have text or something scribed into the fabric of the cloaks
also on another note, in your mock-up picture, you have gold/bronze (or whatever ) all over the torso/arms. but theres absoutely NONE on the legs. i think that needs to change a little... possibly knees? feet? im not exactly sure but adding some down there would make it not detract from the models IMHO

As luck would have it I too love the cloaks and the monastic look of the dark angels. My plan is to have all of my infantry as the cloaked/armored warrior monks.
have text or something scribed into the fabric of the cloaks
Wow, I love this idea. That is partially why it took me so long to decide on the chapter to work with because another Dark Angel chapter has tons of stuff scribbled all over their bikes and armor, so I absolutely love that idea. I think I will use this idea for the inside part of the cloaks. My color I have already chosen for the cloaks is a deep, dark purple for the royal/regal feel of it. I think I may do a bright red color possibly for the inside of the cloaks and have text lining the inside of the cloak as well.

Also great criticism. I whatever I choose (bronze/gold/brass....whatever) I will use that color on the feet as well. Now that you mention it, when I look at the picture it seems off balance. Having the feet with shining gold I think is going to be a balanced starting base for the models.

happy to help, im definetly going to be following this to see where it goes.
and with the purple cloaks, i think that doing the lettering in a silver would look spectacular. unless its on the red side, then do a bone color IMO

I woke up waaaay too early today and couldn't go back to sleep so I used that time for some painting. Just a little bit of detail work today, so I just lumped everything together for one picture.
Dread got his toes painted and some gold trim around the sarcophagous? Not sure about the spelling.
Testing the gold shoes on the speeder crews feet to see if I like it.

Just the base paint of the gold also, I think it will look much better when the whole model is put together also. All the gold will be tied together.
Like I said earlier though it was mainly just a test because the feet ain't be seen in the the speeder when it is all put together

More updates, I am putting some details on my land speeder. I am going to look up some tutorials on osl for some of the interior lights. Other than that I am about to start work on finishing the dreadnought, then on to the crap load of other stuff in waiting. This update is going to have quite a few pics for you guys. Unfortunately, they are not 100% finished polished marines but I loves these guys and how they are turning out so far. The boots beings gold might seem a little out of place at the moment but as the mock up at the beginning of the post implies there will be much more gold to come and will hopefully pull everything together. Without further stalling here they come...
Here is the initial group shot without the gold details.
Here is the Sarge of this group
So here is the first round of robed Disciples, let me know what you guys think. Arms, detail painting, and backpacks soon to come lol. Still haven't decided if I am going to purchase bases from Scibor or not, if I do i am going to get the Royal Lion Bases, ya know since my primarch is "The Lion" and all...Here is the link to the bases also, let me know what you think of the bases also or any other suggestions possibly. http://www.sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=1358

Scibor makes quality stuff. And unlike Finecast, they don't break when you touch. I think you are making great progress.
Maybe I am missing something but I don't see any completed model. :-)

Okay everybody here is my latest update, a legitimately "finished" marine. This is my Disciples of Caliban Sergeant, running around with his power sword and plasma pistol at the ready. Please oh please let me know what you think about the coloring.
 Front View of Sergeant
Right Side of Sergeant (The Crest/Sword on the shoulder is painted black) I am planning on leaving the crests and sword icons on the army black because that is how it is modeled in the codex.
 Rear View of Sergeant
 Left Side of Sergeant
Things you might have noticed, the cord wrapped around his waist is not painted...I think I am going to paint it leather but open to suggestion. Also, the plasma pistol is not painted at all...again open to suggestion, the codex shows most of their weapons painted red but I was trying to think of different colors to differentiate the weapons. Red for the bolters, Blue or Green for plasma, Yellow or Orange for melta, and Blue or White or something for laz weapons? Any comments/suggestions at all throw them at me please.

First of all nicely painted secondly seething about the robe almost seems bland, like it needs detail or something. It seems like a large block of solid color on the model. I think white guns would look cool (if your up to painting white ) I think muted brass/ dark silver would be a cool color for the cord

Thanks again frost

You are a very neat and clean painter, well done on that one. Im liking the black/gold/green but Im not quite sold on the robes. Im looking forward to the washes. Overall I think you have the makings of a very nice army. That Speeder is going to be great.

I think your veteran sergeant in robe is looking good. The colour combo will work. I am sure the wash of the later stages will bring out the details. If you want more colour, you can always paint the robe with two colours, one for the outer lining, one for the inner lining.
For example, the one GW has is bone on the outer lining, red on the inner lining.

If you wana test again on a mandrake i can give you a sweet tip that will get you some amazing robes.
First paint all the robes purple (you did that)
next mix 1/4 purple and 3/4 white then do an extreme light drybrush on the edges.
then to blend it all together last step is
a 3/4 purple ink 1/4 black ink and if you can find it 1 drop of still water.
wash the entire robe. let stand and its done. If you want a shiny material look leave as is .. if you want it to look like dry cloth hit it with a quick spray of dull coat.
*** if you choose to use the dull cloth method dont paint any metalics before this step because it will ruin your metals.

I know it's been a little while since I have updated, I have been very busy. Last Saturday I played in a tournament at my LGS to break in the new 6th edition rules. Unfortunately I didn't have enough points painted up to play my Disciples of Caliban army but my Kabal of the Red Death cleaned up the place with a 2/1 W/L for the day. I love the jink rule so much. Anyway, the painting that I have been able to complete is on this bike along with edge highlighting and a wash on the gold accents. Still need to add highlights to the driver's armor and to the black areas but I also need to get some more paints for that.
Thanks for the subscriptions and the feedback

I like the scheme quite a bit with a couple caveats. I am not sold on the gold feet. I think it is perhaps too much gold. If the accent or soles were gold but the bulk of the feet were the base green I think it would work better. Kind of like the shoulder pads being gold rimmed rather than solid. As for the robes? I like them but I am nut sure about the color. A dark purple/blue king of clashes with the green I think.
You brushwork is sharp though and you are off to a good start. Keep it up!

The bike is awesome. I think the gold trim looks good on the bike. The gold shoes might be a little too accented. But I think some small changes might make it even better.
I love bikes too. With the new rules, they are actually quite awesome.
