Hello Dakka Dakka peoples!

I've been lurking around these forums for a good year or so now, never having painted or posted anything, until now! As I rapidly approach by 30th year, I have been hit by a wave of nostalgia and so have decided to paint up some 40K miniatures in a vain attempt to reclaim my vanishing youth. The last time I played or painted anything would have been when I was 10, back in the days of 2nd edition. I played Blood Angels back then, but my painting skills didn't extend much beyond buying a can of Blood Angles Red spray paint and hosing down my army at point blank range.

I decided to paint some Grey Knights as they just looked cooler when I saw them on the shelf - so here we go! I'm looking to pick up any good tips you can give me, especially when it comes to speed. Producing a good standard is more important to me than speed, however this squad I am about to show you took at least 2 months to paint, which I feel is rather slow. Admittedly, I do have a full time job and a family to look after, but still. Anyway, here we go:

Washes. If you've not painted for many years, washes are probably the thing to get a handle on first. Citadel's range of shades are pretty good; learn how to use them to glaze in shading (not just sploshing it on, though that can work for some things) and they'll help you get more 'pop' for less time.

Edit: For the youngun's: 20 years ago, we had inks, if we were adventurous. Inks were no way near as nice to use as the formulated washes we have now. Many of the painting tricks (solid basecoats on a black undercoat, wash, layering) we take for granted now were much, much harder to achieve back then.

Welcome back to the hobby...! And yes, definitely get hold of some washes, you'll be amazed. You already have very fine brushwork so I doubt it'll take you long to pick up how to get the most out of them.
