hello hello

i've started painting my marines like black tempars and i don't have any black templar icon transfers left so i wanted to freehand them.
But with the lack of experience and quality brushes it failed badly.

does anyone has tips/trics on how to paint them?.

What I do on some things is cut out the shape on a piece of paper and press it against the piece you want to paint. Then just fill it out.

It should be fairly simple since you want to do a black templar design

Loose stencils might be tricky, especially on curved surfaces. First, if your brushes are crappy, you're not going to get good results anyway. Once you have good brushes, you can try actually painting them.

First off, paint a cross - just a + in the area you want to paint. From there, paint tiny dots as guides where you want the corners of the Maltese Cross the Templars wear to go.Then just connect the dots and fill the area in.

Drawing it on is another option. Micron pens are pretty widely available (especially in black) and not particularly expensive. Draw your outline however you like (SRM's tip about using multiple steps and guide points may help), then you can fill it in by brush or by marker (when doing checks and dags on Goffs, I just draw the whole thing on, sometimes switching to an 08 for the sake of expediency). As an added bonus, the ink takes a little while to dry if it can't soak in, so you can usually wipe errors off of the underlying paint before they set.

I use a templar design but with a longer bottom part, I wanted something simple so i could do it free hand when i started a few years back.

The hardest part is getting a constistant sharp point, I'd reckomend thinning the paint with a bit of water first and use any fine brush, i use a sharp pencil sometimes the get the size right or as some have said, a micron pen can be handy too.

When you can't see the drunk guy at a party, you should look for the nearest mirror.

Can't you buy transfer sheets for a few bucks? If GW doesn't sell them themselves (though I'm sure they did at one stage) look for bits retailers who often take transfer sheets out of boxes and sell them separately.

If I remember correctly, there was an article released during the fall of '06 issue of White Dwarf, or at least the Australian one, which had detailed the very method of making the Templars' symbol. It was also on the online website although like many of the useful articles was later removed in place of further "advertising" articles.

Throughout trial and error, I've found through my seven years painting Black Templars that this method, along with a very thin brush, is the preferable method of painting Templar symbols. Although, it does take practise, and with that though in mind, the alternate method is always transfers.

I personally use micron pens and have found the result to be superior to transfers, maybe i'm just not very good at applying transfers though
