So in a break from all the 40k these days and after coming back from a short painting hiatus I decided to paint the Halbarad model that had been sitting on my desk for a bout a year and a half. At the moment only the face is really finished and it looks better in real life than in the pictures unfortunately and everything else is in various stages. With this model I do want to achieve something that does look good, so any comments, criticisms and any advice about possible techniques or color choices will be greatly appreciated.

I came across this when looking for colour schemes for my own Halbarad. I see it's an old post.

Honestly, it isn't well painted. It might be different when finished, so if you have the finished version please post it so I can get a look.

From what I can see so far though, there are a number of problems, firstly the whole model looks very messy (might be better if I see the finished version), I would say water your paints down more. It looks a wee bit thick.

You have managed good solid coats though, which is good. However, your shading and highlighting skills need some work. Keep your shading lines to just the recesses, in a few instances it spills across onto flat areas, both on the cloak and tunic.

The skin in particular needs a lot of work. You seem to have hit the right areas to shade and highlight; well done, but again you need to neaten those lines up, the shading is too broad and a little dark (might just be the picture).

Start with a base of Tallarn Flesh, then water down Dark Flesh a lot to be your shade. Cover the skin areas in it and then mix up Tallarn and Fortress Grey, 3:1 and paint all the areas that aren't the recesses. Do then use the same mix but add some Bleached Bone to it, 3:1:1 and then repeat the last step. Now you want a 1:1 Tallarn and Bone and start your highlights, picking out areas like cheeks, chin, upper lip, nose and brow. Then use bone again to pick out the same areas again, but at the very raised parts. Finally use white (only a tiny amount to pick out the most prominent areas), use the lighting as a guide. This last part takes a bit of practice though. The key to great looking skin is at the very end give it a purple glaze, this ties it all together and gives it warmth.

I hope this is helpful and please do post the finished version. I will post my own when he is finshed.
