Hello and Welcome to my new picture blog of my soon to be massive and yet horribly photographed Necron Army!

What I'd like you to do is stick around a bit, check out my progress, critique, ask questions, I would love some feedback, or advice. If you see something that you want more pictures of, or perhaps a different angle, or if you have a question about any painting/modeling techniques (they're fairly straightforward as I tend to shy away from the more complicated stuff) PLEASE JUST ASK. I want to share my experiences painting my favorite army with like-minded folks, and have fun while doing it. Just a couple of things you can look forward to seeing in this blog:

My philosophy on Necrons is rather simple. They are made out of metal, albeit special cool living metal, like a cross between the T-1000 and Warlock of Marvel Comics fame, but metal all the same. I won't criticize anyone's attempt to try and get creative with a new Necron paint scheme, however the ones that I've seen so far tend to be too busy for my tastes. SO given that my paint scheme is pretty basic, as you will be able to tell (hopefully) from these grainy cellphone photos.

First up, a picture of my half finished Warriors. I assembled them partially (everything but the Flayer) just to make painting the details a bit easier. As of posting this picture I've completed 28 of a total of 60 Warriors. I stop working on them for other projects to keep from getting burnt out. I imagine someone out there knows how boring it is to paint the 55th Gauss Flayer of the past week. Variety is the spice of life.

Here's a close up. I like ancient looking Necrons, but not necessarily run down or rusted out, although those models when done right have awesome character. Primed in black (Krylon Dual Paint and Primer, great matte finish for a great price) I started with a heavy drybrush of Tin Bitz, followed by another heavy drybrush of Boltgun Metal. Since these are just Warriors I left it at that, I wanted the darker metal to kind of represent their station in the hierarchy, whereas as you go further up in position you see Chainmail and even (for HQ's) Mithril Silver. On top of the final coat I apply a heavy wash of Badab Black. I like the dull and sooty/oily that came out in the end. Gold bits were accomplished with a coat of Dwarf Bronze followed by a coat of Shining Gold and a Devlan Mud wash.

Next up is a pic of 15 of my 18 completed Scarab Swarms, all painted the same way. Chaos Black Carapace, Boltgun Metal legs and face, with B.B. Wash. Eyes are a nice bit of spot color, Scab Red followed by Blood Red, and Blazing Orange. Note: All of my Necrons have red (Normally Blood Red) eyes. I just can't see a Man shaped/sized walking killer robot without red eyes. Is it incongruous considering I still use Greens/bright yellows to represent Gauss Energy, etc? Perhaps, but I give no effs.

A closer view of one of the Scarab Swarm bases, I've based them like I've based all of my models: Primed Black, a heavy drybrush of Warlock Purple followed by a heavy drybrush of Scorpion Green. This matches a Tomb World themed gameboard I'm working on (pictures to follow).

One of my Destroyers on the hunt, fairly straight forward. The tubing is first coated with Sunburst Yellow, then blended with Scorpion Green, Goblin Green, and Snot Green. Finally a wash of Thraka Green.

A profile picture, the tubes should be a bit easier to make out.

Now for something completely different. When I get tired of painting metal men I take a break and work on some terrain. Here's just a few examples:

3 of 5 Moonscape craters complete. Rock is Astronomican Gray, Started with a dray brush of Scab Red, followed by a drybrush of Blood Red and Blazing Orange. I tied them all together with a Bloodletter Red Glaze, and I must say I enjoyed working with this new type of paint from the new paint range.

Next up, a couple of pics of my wood! Ha, let me know what you think!

I have a buddy who plays Necrons who will really want to see this!
Great job on the models! I play BA, but I'm also the type of man who tries to keep things as simple as I can. The Terrain also looks good, I had to take a second glance at the moonscape craters, and they were done very well

Hello Again!!!

I have some more pics for your viewing enjoyment/critique/whatever you want! Let's get right down to business.

A view behind the minis, here's where I do most of my work, that's right the Garage!!! My stationary workspace has a magnifying lamp with a daylight bulb, as well as three more lamps for when I need just that much more light. When I get tired of being couped up, I grab my mobile workspace and move into the living room where I can watch something with my wife while I paint/model.

Let's see how the troops are coming along shall we? Almost done, just need the gauss energy rods!

Next I wanted to show you what a finished (albeit slightly older) Warrior Model looks like in my army. I think they look pretty good in the end.

Now for a confession: I didn't always try to keep things simple, it was a lesson I learned the hard way. Here's an early model of mine, where I tried to Base in Scorpion Green so that when all was said and done it would look like it was glowing from the inside out. Now this model has been stripped and painted to look more like the newer warriors in my army (I only tried painting 4 models this way, thank god). Originally it was hastily painted Boltgun Metal with a Thraka Green wash. Atrocious as you can imagine, and it didn't get much better after repainting. So I give you one of my 4 gakky warriors:

Spoiler:

So you saw one, but now here's the rest of my Destroyers:

Ready for Transport to the local Game shop:

And now led by my Destroyer Lord:

And another, my Destroyer Lord has a special place in my heart, haha. His Repulser body is painted Hawk Turquoise which was one of the best paints in the old paint range, loved how well it flowed and it dried with a great finish. I edged highlighted it with Dwarf Bronze. The torso is Primed Black (Once again Krylon), drybrushed with Chainmail, and lightly drybrushed with Mithril Silver, followed by a wash of Badab Black. Shoulder pads are Hawk Turquoise one again, and all gold bits are a coat of Dwarf Bronze, and Shining Gold followed by a wash of Devlan Mud. Its hard to tell without a closer look, but I also washed the edges of all the repulsers with Asurman Blue to make them seem as though they've been affected by the extreme heat.

While we're at it let's take a look at some of my other HQ choices: First up my Crypteks.

First up is my vanilla-this-could-be-any-harbinger Cryptek. All metal was based with Chainmail (Nobility right!?) with a light drybrush of Mithril Silver, followed by a Badab Black wash. Starting to see a pattern yet? Now the fun Bits, for the light blue parts I started with a coat of Astronomicon Gray, followed by an Asurman Blue wash, came out just the way I wanted. Dark Angels Green for the orb, with Scorpion Green for the interior, tubing and Staff. Wasn't experimenting with blending very much at this point, but I did coat each in a thick wash of Thraka Green, and a coat of 'Ard Stuff.

Here's my attempt at a (an?) Harbinger of Eternity, complete with slightly sloppy Aeonstave conversion (first bit of conversion work, and finecast is rather difficult to work with at times). Purple bits are a coat of Astronomicon Gray with a Leviathan Purple wash. We start the staff with a coat of Dwarf Bronze, with a light drybrush of Shining Gold, followed by a 1:1 mix of water and Hawk Turquoise to create a patina on the copper-ish parts of the staff.

Next my less-than-impressive Necron Overlord. For the amount of work I had to put into this model I'm still rather disappointed in it. I'm not at all impressed with finecast, and this was one of the best examples of how bad it can be. Numerous pockmarks and the like needed to be filled and in the course of painting, transporting, and sometimes just looking at it funny, the staff would break off without warning. I had to take numerous breaks on this model to keep from getting too frustrated.

Now for my favorite HQ choice (Aesthetically), the simple Necron Lord. My favorite feature is the cape, simple Gray & Leviathan Purple method discussed above.

I'll finish up the miniatures portion of today's post with my finecast Flayed Ones. Now I think that finecast really shines in these models, and aside from filling the occasional hole, I loved the level of detail and the opportunity to put away my metallic paints and use some different colors and techniques, after all, its not often that a Necron player gets to paint flesh, flayed as it may be.

My Favorite Flayed One, love how the flesh cape turned out:

Moar:

Finally, the whole gang freshly arrived and thirsting for blood, they split up on the hunt.

A quick glimpse of my progress on the game board. I used a mat of grass available from any hobby shop, then coated it using a stone textured spray paint (your choice on how coarse you want it). I then coated it with Krylon Dual Paint and Primer, followed by the most vibrant (in this case satin) Purple spray paint I could find. Then I found this really great fluorescent Green spray paint that has a great shining/glowing affect under any light conditions even considering I didn't apply a whole lot. Last by not least a coat of clear coat protects the paint job from any of the hazards of transporting and storing my gameboard. This is only one 2x4 piece of three.

The other 2 pieces of my game board just need the clear coat, and then time to work on some Tomb World themed terrain!

OK, a Sneak Preview of what's to come next time: Immortals!!!

Spoiler:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Don't have much to share today except for this. I found it while trolling my way through the gallery and it brought back some memories. I don't really know what happened to my old Necron Army, probably in my mom's attic somewhere or worse: the trash.

NOTE: This is not my figure, nor my work, I'm just a fan of it.

So in tribute I decided to pose one of my warriors a bit more dynamically, inspired by the old OOP model. First I had to find a hand, so I used one from my bits box, I think it used to belong to either a Cryptek or my Overlord. Either way here's the first pic:

I wanted him to be pointing at something, perhaps showing a few more signs of intelligence than is normal of his caste. Next step was getting rid of the hand on the gauss flayer. Had to use my Exact-o-knife and a small file but I managed to get the hand cleanly off:

Also, note how I (using my hand saw) swapped the shoulder joint around so that it would make the pose work. And here, a little sticky tac shows what the model will look like once I'm done!

Well, Hello!

I'm posting at quite the rapid pace now, because I have so much to show, although I'm sure the posts to even out as I have pretty much gotten you all caught up at this point. You can expect an update at least weekly after this, as I have a day job and must return to it soon. So without delay....

I was so stoked about my conversion that I had to finish it last night, check it out:

I think it came out well, would love to hear what others think, and sorry for the blurry second photo!

So I told you we would have Immortals, and OP Delivers. As you might be able to tell I'm in the process of re-basing (or in some cases initially basing) these guys, as I had the idea for my Tomb World themed gameboard after I'd put paint to plastic on these little dudes, although they will look much like the bases of my other figures.

I painted up 20 Immortals in all, 10 with Tesla Carbines, 10 with Gauss weaponry. I went with a blue energy scheme for the Tesla Weapons as I just didn't like the idea of that lightning being green, but perhaps I should have kept it consistent. Let me know what you think:

For the Gauss Weapons I stuck with the green, and overall I'm happy with how they turned out.

Up next I did a little conversion work with green stuff, and made a few scarabs in a failed attempt to try to make a Swarmlord C'tan Shard. Though in the end I got a cooler Nightbringer Base!

Oh, I almost forgot my latest cadre of Necron Warriors (16, 17 if you count my conversion) are complete. You can also see them arranged on the last 2 of my 5 craters which I also completed last night.

Finally, I share my first painted vehicle... And subsequently why I am so terrified of painting my other vehicles. It just did not turn out like I hoped. While it photographs well, if you get close it isn't a pretty sight. I took a few short cuts I won't take again, but I'm definitely not going to use this paint scheme again. What do you think?

Okay, so what do we have on our plate for the coming week... Finish basing older figs, finish a few more warriors, oh! They may not be much to look at right now but these bits are each a part of one Lychguard figure hot of the sprue. I'm looking forward to these as I like working with plastic, but I'm also trying something new. I'm going to magnetize them so I can swap Warscythes for Swords and Boards all willy-nilly like. This is the first time I've tried anything like this, so wish me luck, and any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

As always, thanks for reading/looking, and let me know what you think!!!

Thanks, I'm glad you like them. Funny thing is that every time I post a picture of one of my figs I see something I wanna change or fix, like a little bit of Mithril Silver edge highlighting around gold bits, or a bit of blending in the eyes. Its hard for me not to go back too much. Maybe when I finish my army I'll go back and fix some of my earlier work, haha.

So I had more time than I expected today, so I got cracking on my first 5 of 10 Lychguard. As I said, I'm trying something new: Magnetized Wargear. Used to be that outside of our HQ choices Necrons had very little in the way of wargear choices, now with Crypteks, Triarch Praetorians (had to Google how to spell that, yeesh), and Lychguard that age has come to an end. And with the level of success (and a few handy lessons learned) I think I'll continue magnetizing where practicle (i.e. my upcoming TP's). WIthout further ado here's the squad:

You'll have to excuse the missing heads, I want to be able to paint them with more detail than would be possible if I glued them to their necks before painting. The whole reason behind me magnetizing these things is a practical one: I'm Cheap! I want 10 Lychguard with Warscythes and I want 10 Lychguard with Swords and Boards. Now I can have 10 of each for the price of 10, as opposed to 20!

I positioned each so that whenever I was using the staff, both arms would be attached to it. After that the S&B just swapped out, not having to be in a specific position. I always glued the magnets to the staff first then, with the 2nd set of magnets attached to the staff, glued them to the wrists of the arms. That way I was able to figure out the ideal position for the arms and glue the shoulder joints accordingly. Here's the rest of the squad with Warscythes:

Now for the swapped in wargear, all in all this turned out nicely. Next step is filling in a few gaps with green stuff, and priming. I plan on painting all the components you see here individually (including their heads) so that I can get good detail for every angle. Still thinking up ideas for the shields' paint scheme so if you have some inspiration feel free to share it, so far I'm thinking a very matte black with small white stars, but again I'm not sure.

As you might be able to see posing the arms for the staffs still makes the S&B poses pretty dynamic, although the second figure from the left is a bit awkward, meh. As I said I'm not trying to hide these magnets, they will be blatantly obvious (though slightly less so when painted I hope) so I'm not so terribly concerned with that aspect of these figures' aesthetic. Here's a closer look:

Let me know what you think so far and I'll keep you posted on the process! In the meantime, I've mentioned that I have a stationary workspace for more serious work, but when its family time or if I just want to be around my wife and kids I can bring my mobile workstation (essentially a small tray haha) into the living room to continue hobbying. The only problem is my little monkey of a future wargamer:

Always curious and always making off with a bit or paint pot here and there. Its interesting you'd think my 5 year old son would be more interested in this stuff than my 10 month old daughter, and yet he couldn't care less. Perhaps when he is older...?

Salutations

Time for a quick update, bits are primed and bodys've got their base colors done. To represent the Lychguard's higher "caste" I went with a slightly different paint scheme than I have for My Immortals or Warriors (As you'll see below). Anyway, I'll explain in a moment, in the meantime, PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!

Here they are all laid out next to their bits, which I will paint one I've finished the majority of the model. I use sticky tac to hold the figures and bits against a piece of plasticard that way the smaller bits don't move under the force of the spray paint. Also, it allows to to prime outside (as to not anger the wife) and quickly bring them all inside so that I don't having a priming mishap, which has set me back on one of my other models (Nightbringer).

Here are some close ups of the finished, I dunno, overall color? I plan on making the shoulders (note: not the collars) and the legguards gold, but this is the majority finished color for the model. I achieved this color by first drybrushing on a heavy coat of Boltgun Metal, than a second drybrush of Chainmail. Next I applied a heavy wash of a 1:1 mix of Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil (Got the idea for this wash from MiniwargamerJ on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/MiniwargamerJ) but you can also just use one or the other for varying effects. Finally I got my first chance to use my new dry paint: Necron Compound. And it works great!!! I will say this: Less is more when using these dry paints, they have a lot of pigment and you want to use them sparing to get the worn edge highlighting effect that I got.

Finally here's the last pic: A close up comparison of one of my Warriors next to one of these Lychguard. I think I achieved my goal of making the paint schemes different enough to distinguish the hierarchy, but please let me know what you think!!!

I have a 4-day weekend coming up so I expect to make a lot more progress but I would love to here what you guys think so far!!! Thanks for reading, and looking!!

Actually, if you paint them right, the magnets might fit in with the whole Necron aesthetic. I'd say play with it a bit, and see what happens.
Off-topic: very adorable child you have there.
Keep up the good work!

Its that time again everyone!

Sorry if progress has been a bit slower than usual but expect yet another update tomorrow. I'm planning a painting marathon this evening into the wee hours of the morning while my wife works on law school homework. What I have for you today are my Lychguard. No, they aren't done yet though I'm sure plenty of you are wondering just how much longer its going to take me to paint 5 necron models. My answer? However long it takes.

BTW, thank you to Dr. Temujin for the advice, the magnets do seem to be blending in with the models as I paint them, though I have having a bit of trouble with them falling off from time to time. I think I've fixed the problem by not painting the magnets while they are attached to another magnet, and so far no more breakage!

This time around I was able to paint the gold bits but after I was done I really wasn't happy with how much it clashed with the bright (almost blue-ish) Necron Compound. It actually halted my progress for a day while I thought it out. So what did I do? A simple wash of Nuln Oil!!! Darkened the model ever so slightly and still doesn't look quite as dark as my warriors. Here's a quick comparison of old to new base color:

How I did the gold this time:

Basecoat: Warlock Bronze
Next: Heavy coat of Dwarf Bronze
Next: Heavy drybrush of Gehenna's Gold, followed by an Agrax Earthshade Wash.
Next: I decided to try out the new Citadel Dry compound Golden Griffon. I was extremely unhappy with the results. Its such a weak gold color that next to the original coats it looked silver. I fixed it however and actually achieved a really good gold by going over it again with a light drybrush of Shining Gold. It turned a big negative into a big positive so I will continue to use the dry compound, though I wouldn't recommend it for your last gold coat.
Finally: I edge highlighted every gold edge with Mythril Silver for that extra polished look.

Have a look at the rest of the models:

I decided on purple for the tabards because it reminds me of royalty, and what better way to represent their status as Royal Bodyguards? First I based in Hormagaunt Purple, followed by a thin coat of Liche Purple, then washed the tabard with Leviathan Purple. I achieved the edging affect by lightly drybrushing Warlock Purple from the bottom towards the torso of the model, and I'm really happy with how it turned out in the end.

The Green Orb is fairly simple: Dark Angels Green basecoat, followed by a crescent moon detail first with Snot Green, followed by Scorpion Green. Now as many Necron Players (or painters) know Scorpion Green is quite thick, so I recommend thinning it before trying to do this small of a detail. I always saturate my brush, then dip it in a cup of clean water and then dab it on a paper towel to remove the excess liquid. This allows for a more even flow of paint, without much wastage from having to place a drop on your palette and then mix with water, only to use a small amount of your mixture. Finally just a spot of Skull White finishes up the process. Here's the last couple of models:

As always I hope you enjoyed reading and looking and that you look forward to the next update. If you have any questions feel free to comment, I'm always trolling on dakka. Till Next time everyone!

As promised here is my second update!

I've spent the past 24 hours trying to finish up my Lychguard, and I was partially successful! All I have left is the Swords and Boards, which will probably take me the rest of the week as I start work again tomorrow night, curse rotating shift work!!! Have a look at the squad:

SO essentially what I finished were the Warscythes and the heads. So here's a close up of a Warscythe from a couple angle/lighting configuration:

I've tried blending together fancy colors to make cool looking energy weapons with less than stellar results... So this time I thought I would try something new: LIGHTNING BOLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And they turned out better than it would have if I had continued with my earlier methods.

What I did: Based the green areas with Dark Angels Green, followed by a thin coat of Snot Green. From that point I had decided to freehand some lighting bolts. First thing I did was choose points for the bolts to begin and end, and I marked each of them with a large note of Goblin Green. Then using the same Goblin Green I freehanded lightning bolts between the highlighted points (connect the dots). Then I grabbed my Scorpion Green and highlighted those same notes and went over the lightning bolts again. After that a quick glaze of Waywatcher Green. Followed up finally by one last highlight of the points and the bolts with Skull White. Still not as good as the cool airbrush gradients I've seen (mine has been broken for some time now) but much better than a bland green or metal blade.

Here are a few pictures of the models close up. Since I was experimenting with the magnets and what not some of the poses are not the best (because the process I used at first for ensuring the arms and hands lined up was somewhat hasty and sloppy), but all in all I'm quite pleased with how they turned out. I opted for the Skull White faces from the codex because I couldn't think of anything better, and I didn't want them to be just the same metal as everywhere else.

Soon enough I'll complete the shields and swords in the following week, and then I think I'll try my hand at one of the 3 Ghost Ark/Doomsday Arks I have in my garage. As always please leave comments and critiques I'd love to hear what you guys think! Thanks for looking and reading!

Awesome Lychguards! Admittedly, I may steal take influence from that particular lightning effect you have for the Warscythes, looks very interesting that way.

Haha, that would be assuming it was my idea to start with if you could steal it from me. Truth be told I know I've seen lightning bolts before, I just decided to give it a try and I'm happy with it. I'm hard at work on the shields right now so expect an update by Monday for that. Anyway, thanks for looking

Greetings!!!

Just a minor update today, just to bounce some ideas off of you guys really and to show you what's going to be coming up soon. I got jealous of the 40000 points of Necrons blog and while I don't have nearly that much, I have quite a bit of work ahead of me, but the painting aspect of this hobby is my favorite part, despite getting more into the gaming said lately. Anyway onto the pics....

For the shields I painted the green bits first (maybe not the best idea) but I only did the Dark Angels Green basecoat and Snot Green for the next layer, I'm gonna hold off on the rest until I finish the metal bits. This first pic is with just the initial drybrushing of Boltgun Metal. This next pic has the next drybrushing of Chainmail:

So here's my dilemma, I'm trying to decide what I want to do with the shield parts. I had this idea where I'd blend the little recessed lines so that it looked like the flow of power, or possibly the same color green as the Warscythes, with the lightning bolts, but I'm not entirely sold on that idea either. If anyone has any suggestions or other examples I'd love to see them.

Up next is a glimpse into the large amount of Necrons I have yet to assemble (or even unbox) as well as my Greenskin Warboss.

Up first are my HQ choices:

x2 Necron Lord w/ Rez Orb
x1 Anrakyr the Traveller
x1 Imotekh the Stormlord
x1 Trazyn the Infinite
...and yes, x1 Cairn Wraith! Check out skeptic monkey's necron blog for where I got the inspiration but this guy makes an mean Harbinger of Despair, with a few Deathmark Bits and Triarch Bits. I'm excited to get started on some of them. One thing I plan on doing is making my own staves (staffs?) to replace the finecast ones that are so fragile.

I want to get some more Spiders, but right now I'm saving up for birthdays and Christmas presents for the kids, so I just got a test model to work out what kind of paint scheme I want to use. Also, my Deceiver model. I'm also thinking about getting a Prince Apophas Model to try and convert him into a swarmloard C'tan shard. I'll have to make him much bigger I think, but that's what Green Stuff is for!

Next up is my CCB which I plan on magnetizing it so it can be a Annihilation Barge as well. One box of Immortals left which I plan on using it to make Deathmarks. I have 2 boxes of Triarch Praetorians, still going to use one of them as Magged Lychguard. The other I plan on using to convert more Crypteks, fun!

Now we have my box of Wraiths and 3 boxes of Tomb Blades, Wraiths are a unit I want more of, that's for sure!

Next up are those vehicles I've been putting off and putting off painting:

x3 Ghost Ark/Doomsday Arks
x2 Night/Doom Scythes

And along with those some neat terrain

x1 Gaming Hill
x1 Ancient Ruins (which I'm going to try and make Necron-ish if I can)
x1 Mechinicum Factory Ruin

I hope guys look forward to what's coming up, and please comment/critique and let me know what you think about the shields! As always thanks for reading

Salutations everyone!

I've been gone for a bit but I had a 3 day weekend Wednesday through Friday and I was able to get a lot of work done. And since I've been getting a bit a painter's apathy I've been branching out a little bit outside of Necrons and getting kind of excited thinking about my new acquisitions.

First things first, I finally finished the Lychguard, here's some pics of the finished products then I managed to take pictures as I went along for once! Without further adieu:

The whole unit, magnetized to swap out S&B for Warscythes. I chose to go with Lightning Bolts because I can't blend well enough to represent a a neat looking energy blade.

Close ups of the members of the unit. I they were a blast to paint this way

Here's the unit (one is above the others off camera) all packed up and ready to go, right alongside my Destroyers.

I WISH! I took these before I finished the hyperphase swords, how awesome would these guys be if we could take both Warscythes and Shields!

In other news I finished re-basing/basing my Immortals, actually I just realized I based my HQ choices as well, but I didn't take pictures :( However its really bringing the whole army together. I think I'm going to order some of the Gale Force 9 crystals to make some Necron Terrain, lord knows I have enough Foam for anything else.

Up next for my army I'm going to put together some of my Independent Characters, well two really, and a Harbinger of Despair Conversion. Thanks to skeptic monkey for the inspiration, I think its just the coolest idea.

Its a Cairn Wrath Model with the one handed Rod of Covenant (and the other hand) from the Lychguard (Triarch P's) box.

Up Next is Imotekh the Stormcaller. I'm partiallyassembling him here, because I have a neat idea for his cape. Also as you can see I've greenstuffed his legguards and later I filed them down to get the air bubbles out.

And so we can see in the picture of the Stormlord's cape that Finecast strikes again! However, it actually gave me a little inspiration. As I am not a huge fan of the GW paint scheme I've been racking my brain, but then I say the pitting on the cape. I'm going to try out a copper color with some really nice verdigris. Tying that in with the golds and silvers on the actual model itself.

I didn't actually take a decent picture of my Anrakyr Model yet, however I wanted to show you this. Its his Warscythe, and it was disgusting. Flash, bad cast, and just bent in every direction you don't want it to be bent in. So, its in my bits box because you never throw away a bit. Instead I grabbed a one-handed Warscythe bit from my other Lychguard box (good thing I had two laying around). I'll post more pictures of my progress in about a week, I think.

So now I want to walk you through how I did the shields past what you saw in my earlier posts.

To get to this point I first base coated the green parts with Dark Angels Green (or Caliban Green) followed quickly by Snot Green (I think the new analog is Warpstone Green). The wide lightning bolts are Goblin Green, and were painted freehand. The twitchier the better.

Here I've painted the Bolts with Scorpion Green as well as the tubing to give it that glowing energy look. I think at this point I've also given it a Waywatcher Green Glaze. It tied the green together well, but I wanted more of a matte finish and this left the model satin or semi gloss even. Despite this I didn't want to darken it so a shade was out of the question anyway.

Next I started work on the gold bits, with a basecoat of Tin Bits.

Followed by a coat of Gehanna's Gold. From here I applied a shade of Agrax Earthshade to soften the brightness and highlighted with Shining Gold.

Finally using Skull White I finished up the lightning bolts, which I think turned out quite well!

Here's a pic of the whole batch together.

Finally a nice close up of a shield on a model.

Well, I said I've been branching out, and what I meant by that was.... ORKS!

A friend of mine needed Space Marines for his BT army, and didn't want to spend a whole lot. And seeing as I'm getting a little tired of Boltgun Metal, perhaps its time to get tired of some green! So he bought the Assault of Black Reach box on sale at our FLGS and I tossed him 40 bucks for all his orks. I think I got the better deal in the end, at least in plastic. Only Issue I've found is that the models have really bad mold lines, and even places where it seems the models' halves don't really match up. Either way the price was right

Also bought some Grots because for 16 bucks I get a lot of cool models and a decent warboss conversion. I'm actually pretty stoked to work on this stuff

No problemo. I actually broke out and primed my first Doom Scythe last night too! I'm trying to think of different schemes that will match my army. I may actually end up spraying on the metal color again and going from there. Really not sure. Props by the way to you. Your Necrons are looking great!

My apologies for being off the grid of late, however I've been busy, mostly with work, some with Ebay. I managed to get 25 OOP Flayed Ones for approximately 90 bucks, and I just can't wait for them to get here. In the meantime however I started work on the 11 models I've been accumulating slowly, since I finally managed to strip all the old paint off of them (Acetone works best for metal models in case you were wondering). That makes 41 models when you include my finecast models!!! My goal is to have the full 60 in order to field 3 full units I'm using the same techniques I use for my Warriors/Immortals except the flesh will be quite gruesome when I'm done, not to mention plenty of blood spatter. In addition I've started to assemble my Canoptek Wraiths, which have probably been the most fun to assemble since I put together that new Cryptek Conversion. Anyway I'll post an update with pics soon, and I hope I start catching a bit more interest soon, I'd love to here some feedback! Thanks for reading!

Does that also include plans to edit the finecast Flayed Ones so they look like they have actual flesh on them? If yes, I would definitely like to see what you do.

I was actually a bit confused by this, of my finecast Flayed ones three are painted to represent a darker, older more leathery flesh, but the one Fleshcape model has a freshly flayed cape of flesh. The last one with the tubes of blood etc I could revisit to make the tanks look as though they have some blood in them. Aside from that I'm probably not going to revisit them. However I am going to convert/greenstuff up a Flayed One Lord (if you've read Fall of Damnos you know why I wish this had been in the codex. So you will see soon enough what I've done, but as a quick hint, these flayed ones aren't just flaying humans anymore. Also, I've just purchased a Realm of Battle board and I'm going to be working with a couple friends of mine to build a collapsible table to place the tiles into. Also, 3 of 6 Wraiths are assembled and awaiting priming!!!

Greetings once again everyone

Finally some pictures! I've been working hard on my Flayed Ones and I'm almost done, I just wanted to show everyone the progress.

So every time I've seen someone paint up a set of Flayed Ones its as if they've just torn through a platoon of Cadians or a unit of Guardians. Always the same normal flesh colors and blood red blood. When I was coming up with ideas I wondered why I'd never seen a flayed one pack that had just torn through a pack of Ork Boys or Tau? Well, these are the test models (all except Ta for now) in the various stages of painting.

First up is the one I first painted Fortress Grey and then Skull White. From there I can either use the red or blue shade or the same color glaze for different effects. One way or another with some layering you either have pale human flesh or Tau flesh. I'll get a Tau Model painted up with the next batch. Also when I get to basing them my friend is giving me some extra Tau heads

Here's one with a Baal Red Wash, really came out nice and pink and freshly flayed. A bit of Gloss Varnish and it will look perfect

Up next is the darker shade of human flesh. It starts with a coat of Dwarf Flesh, followed by an Agrax Earthshade wash.

Here I've start layering with Dwarf Flesh. The final Layer will be Elf Flesh when I have the chance.

The Ork flesh started with a Dark Angels Green

Next up was a coat of Snot Green!

Finally a coat of Scorpion Green ( I actually used the Game Color analog because being a Necron player I need a bit more paint for my money) and a Biel-Tan Green wash I'm going to do one more highlight with Scorpion Green and one more wash.

I good pic of the Ork slayers together.

Also, I've been playing more and more of 6th edition and I have to say, I've had a ton of fun each time. I've learned a lot of things. My normal game partner has two armies, Tau and Black Templar. While I enjoy playing small games against the Tau, he really prefers his BT. I've learned that against Space Marines the best troop choice is probably Tesla Carbine Immortals. Against Tau its Gauss Immortals. Having finally finished up the Lychguard I was happy to finally try them out, and against SM Sword and Board Lychguard are unstoppable. The next thing I can't wait to try out on the battlefield are my Canoptek Wraiths I've assembled 3 of my six and once I've built them all they're next on the list.

The latest from eBay assembled and double sided taped to my paint stick, ready for priming. You all should know (and anyone who grabbed a copy of the new How to Paint Citadel Miniatures already knows) that this wasn't my idea but it really does make priming models super easy. And having purchased both of the past Painting books they're worth the money if all you like is looking at some awesomely painted miniatures, which is probably my favorite part of the hobby

Time for a new update!

The Latest from eBay, 16 new Flayed Ones for the price of 5. That's right 45 bucks for even more Flayed One goodness (or badness really). I play for fun a lot and I just love the character of these models.

So its been awhile since I posted my primed up Ind. Character choices, and now that I've made some progress I wanted to update everyone. First up is Imotehk the Stormcaller. An ancient and storied character in his own right I feel he deserved special attention. A powerhouse in his own right I just wanted to make sure he stood out. I decided to go with the worn penny look and this is how I achieved it:

First up I based him with Tin Bits followed by a nice coat of Dwarf Bronze. The old GW metal paints go one thin so be sure to make lots of coats. Over the first drybrushed coat I applied a thick wash of Biel-tan Green. Then I applied another drybrushed coat of Dwarf Bronze, followed by an Asurman Blue wash, and another DB of Dwarf Bronze. As you can see I am also going to be pinning his staff hand just to be careful.

A view from the top before I started highlighting, I think it came out well.

I used the same technique for his cloak, making sure the more raised parts were a brighter bronze while the patina was more evident in the deeper parts of the model.

A view of the cloak that most people will see from the back.

Since the Copperish color is more of a warmer color I didn't want to go with the traditional Scorpion/Moot Green energy scheme so I went with an Orange-ish fiery energy (matches better with Gauntlet of Fire anyway). I used the new Yriel or Uriel yellow. Its a very warm yellow. From there I washed all the bits first with the Sepia ink, followed by Ogryn Flesh and then Sepia once more for a final glowing orange fire look:

Here's better view with the cloak now attached:

[/url]

Finally all the steel parts were first painted Leadbelcher, then Ironbreaker finally highlighted with Runefang steel following a Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade wash. Of the Necron Script was highlighted with Shining Gold. I look forward to completing the Head and staff. The staff will have the same fiery scheme as the GoF. Note: When you do the last drybrush of Dwarf Bronze, make sure to get a lot of coverage on the center of each rib section to make it look a bit more polished

I also went ahead and finished up this model as its been a while since I actually put it together. I need to do the white highlights on the eyes once more but then he is done.

Also in progress is Anrakyr. The Dark Bronze bits will eventually be bright gold, and the orbs and energy will be a blue scheme kind of whats on the box.

A quick pic of the Doom Scythe pilot. Just need to finish up hi gold accents and the control panel and I can assemble the rest of the model.

Also coming soon my _____ model, totally just blanked on the name and don't feel like googling it. I got an excellent caste with very few bubbles. Very happy with this. I will say that since Finecast debuted it has steadily gotten better and better.

In other news I just got a Brand New Realm of Battle Game board from GW, and I think I'll be writing an article on how to paint it in a Tomb World theme! I'll link it here once I do!

Just a short update today, got a chance to get out and play a bit. Also played my first 2000pt game in ages against Tau. Tons of fun and somewhere in the middle of it I decided to take some bad pictures

Here's a decent one of the battlefield (soon enough you'll be able to see the finished Imotekh to make all of this relevant):

My FLGS has some pretty awesome terrain, including one Realm of Battle gameboard. Makes for some beautiful games! Also, who new that old computer parts made such awesome gaming terrain! Here we see a squad of Warriors advance up the map (hammer and anvil deployment) alongside Imotekh and his squad of Lychguard. We had already lost one LG to a Broadside, curse the Tau and their Night Vision.

Next one's a bit closer, and apparently full of Necron Butt!

I apologize for the quality of these photos didn't exactly have a steady hand. Some tau pathfinders disembark only to be overrun by Canoptek Wraiths:

A nice looking squad of Fire Warriors holds down a sabotaged objective worth three points, it only exploded once and killed one FW.

he Wraiths + Destroyer Lord combination that mopped up the pathfinders and the command battlesuits, Re-rolling ones helped a great deal here.

Finally a closeup of the LG and Imotekh:

In the end is was a significant victory for the Necrons, but I didn't table him. He still had his broadsides, and 2 squads of FW and an Ion Cannon wielding tank. My Destroyers left his command squad down to one suit (and one wound) which the wraiths finished up. Lightning destroyed his Railgun Tank. The Immortals and Warriors destroyed his stealthsuits. I started the game with both the 4pt and 1pt objectives (the scouring) and quickly grabbed both two point objectives and ending up contesting one of the others. I earned Slay the Warlord, Firstblood, and Linebreaker in addition to that, though he too ended up slaying my warlord. All in all it was a fun game with a friendly player so I'll be happy for a rematch. See you guys later tonight/tomorrow for more hobby updates!

Greetings once again! Got some great new pics of the latest of my HQ models

First up, as the blog says, its Copper Imotekh!

The technique is discussed above, and I think he came out just great, this was my first time trying out the worn copper look! Now I might introduce some warriors painted similarly interspersed throughout my army

Up Next is Anrakyr the Traveller! As you may have seen above I had to replace his warscythe with a LG WS, but its still fit perfectly. That and its a bit more sturdy. Gotta love when a plan comes together.

I've been pretty quite about this one for a bit but he's finally done. I went ahead and glossed his cloak, I dunno I think it makes it look more like its made of the dark or some sort of dark energy. Its actually 1:1 mix of Chaos Black and Necron Abyss, with NA highlights and points of skull white.

Here's something I've mentioned on the Flayed one post I made and I wanted to show everyone progress. Dremel and greenstuff and this is what you get. I also drilled some holes where I plan on putting skulls of spikes, also have some DE bits that are skulls on straps that I plan to incorporate.

Here's the DS pilot with glowy eyes, and now on to the rest of the model:

Here's a wing piece: Primed Black, DB of Caliban Green, followed by Snot Green and a Thraka Green Wash. I plan on DB-ing Goblin green and finally Scorpion green followed by a very thinned down wash of Snot Green. Love to get some feedback!

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Finecast either, I don't think it does anything for detail and it seems to break even easier than normal resin, I have rage quit my crons cuz both my overlords and crypteks stale have snapped and I don't seem to be able to find any way to re attach them (advice would be appreciated) models look good, though I'm not sure bout that despairteks stalf painting. Also how do you blend those pipes?

With the flash, the colors are a lot brighter than in person, its a bit more subtle in person. As far as all the staffs. I either find a metal/plastic replacement or I pin them. I've got some lock wire of various gauges and a decent hobby drill. Essentially I hollow out the staff and replace the inside with a metal wire and then pin it to the arm of the model as well. I also have plastic rods for building my own staffs though I haven't had to. Also, which pipes are you talking about? The staff parts or the tube for the despairtek?
