He needs shading really badly. A wash of Nuln Oil then a drybrush of Leadbelcher (Badab Black and Boltgun Metal in the old days) will make him look a lot less flat and much, much nicer. You should also just clean up the mold line and paint over it, it's not a big deal. I'm not a big fan of the goofy mace looking thing, but you said it was secondhand so I'm assuming he had it already. All in all, not a bad start for 40 minutes.
