ATTENTION: This first post has the initial "brainstorming" attempt. Post #7 has my newest attempt.

Hey Everyone!

I've been inspired by a lot of people's armies over the years, but this time, it was hyv3mynd at Synaps3. He's currently using an 1850 list that seems like a lot of fun, focusing on our foot elements, and he includes Maugan Ra for his allied HQ. I'll let you visit his site and read his battle reports to get a good look at how it works (he also has battle reports here on Dakka), but when I asked him about it, it mainly takes advantage of him giving Fearless to any one of our otherwise low-leadership units (Grots and Beasts in particular, but also his large Warrior squad).

I was really impressed with it, and thought I'd give Maugan a try sometime for myself. I like to proxy a lot when I try out units. However, when I use HQs, especially special characters, I like to get my hands dirty and put together a suitable model that is distinctly unique. Since I don't have the money to shell out for a finecast, authentic Maugan Ra model, I'm stuck with working what I have.

Obviously a fairly simple conversion. Just took an Incubus that I was going to use for another conversion many moons ago, added a spare dark lance, put a hell glaive blade on the end for the executioner, and chopped accordingly to make everything fit.

The head is a stand in. I'm planning on using the tall Archon head with the plume and mini-skull on it. Also, for the back, the Incubus model is supposed to have Trophy Racks. I didn't want him to simply look like an Incubus with a dark lance, so I'm thinking of putting spare PGLs from the Hellion kit in their place to signify a power source for his armor, and because it will be quite subtle and not take away from the BIG FREAKING GUN!

I still need to green stuff around the handle a bit I think. Also, what should I do with the left hand? I think I should just leave it, because if he has a two-handed weapon, and simply let go for a little flourish/extra reach, it wouldn't make sense for him to have anything there. However, I'm worried it might look weird with an empty hand on a model like this.

Thoughts? He was a very quick conversion, so I expect there to be a lot of criticism. Have at it.

I should also state, that my list wouldn't include Incubi, or infantry-based dark lances, so there shouldn't be much of a WYSIWYG issue if I did decide to keep this model and use him in a tournament.

Through the looking glass

Well, to be frank, that weapon looks waaaay to big on him. Especially because he's eldurp.

Also, maugan ra is kind of stocky and covered in bone motifs.

Basically He'll be fine as counts as but if I saw him I wouldn't know what he was or what you were aiming for.

I like how the weapon turned out, the blade on the end really suits it IMO, and I really like the idea, I personally wanted to use Incubi as Trueborn (specifically, I wanted my Trueborn bodyguard for teaming up with Sliscus to still be Incubi in terms of fluff).

I must say though, the pose just doesn't suit it, the gun is too long to really suit being held like that. Obviously with a metal Incubi model you only have so much room to modify it, and it seems like the gun is probably too long to run it straight down to his other hand so I'm not sure how you would fix it on that model, I think unfortunately one of the other 2 incubi bodies would have worked better.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

Not a fan of the pose at all. I'm also failing to see how the stock Maugan Ra model does not gel with the DE aesthetic. He fits in much better than any of the other Phoenix Lords IMO.

Unless I'm seriously mistaken, I never actually said the stock model didn't fit in with the aesthetic. Not once.

I did have a wall of text, so I'm sorry if you missed it, but I stated that I didn't see the need in spending money on finecast when A) am only going to playtest him, not necessarily going to use him forever, B) I have plenty of unused bits, and C) have other priorities for my money. Like I said, it was a very quick conversion.

As for the comments on the conversion quality, thank you everyone. The more time passed, the more I realized how much I hate it. I'm going to switch it for a different Incubus, and see if I can find a skull or two to throw on him to make him seem more like Maugan Ra (I should have some spare Defiler heads around here somewhere).

Okay folks, here's take #2 for the Maugan Ra conversion.

Here's what I changed:

1) Used a different Incubus for the base model.
2) Used a Disintegrator Cannon instead of a Dark Lance. (I am going to use absolutely zero Disintegrator Cannons in any army that uses him)
3) Took a spare Defiler head and chopped it a bit for a skull-like shoulder pad.
4) Finally found my spare PGLs from my Hellion kits to give him a backpack.
5) Put the correct head on him.

So really, the only thing from the first model is the Hellglaive-turned-Executioner.

Possible issues:

1) He has no left hand. The hand I had kept falling off, so I'm going to look at putting a hand from the Wracks box in its place, as the finecast might be a bit better on the metal than the plastic was.
2) The head had a defect that I couldn't really fix (the crescent on the top, the left part broke off), leading to it being asymetical. Personally, I like the asymetry, so I think I will be fine with this.
3) Not enough skulls. I tried putting spare skulls-on-spikes or chains on the body, but they had trouble adhering. I will most likely give it another shot though.

I went ahead and primered it grey and put a quick-and-dirty Devlan Mud wash on it to help you pick out details in the pictures. Since I took the pictures with my iPhone I thought this would be necessary.

Much better. The first one looks like he's throwing the gun. Not so sure about that shoulder pad though.

I agree that the shoulder pad threw me off a bit too.

Can I ask, is there anything specific about the shoulder pad that you don't like? Too big? Not skull-like enough?

Do you have any suggestions what I could replace it with? Or just drop it altogether?

Too big. I would drop it entirely.
