Dakka Dakka Campaign 2000pts Battle Report
Obsidian Legion (Necrons) vs new CSM
So, with the recent release of the CSM codex, a friend who is starting to get into 40k and I were able to get a game in. The CSM army is both of ours, and we were ready to test it out with the new rules. So, unfortunately, very little is painted of the army, and the lighting didn’t jive with the makeshift terrain, so please bear with me. I also wanted to try out a silver tide style of necrons, since I have not ran it before, and my friend is still learning the game, so the fewer types of units of mine, the better for both of us. I was also giving him several hints throughout the game, but it was a blast (and more ‘tense’ than my last two reports).
FLUFF
((Overlord Cyclonus had just touched down on the surface of Perdus. He had left his fellow overlord Reverb in search of any remaining deposits of Necron origin in the area. Sensors had picked up something but it was faint, and thus a large group of infantry was dispatched to comb the plains. However, it seemed that a war band of Chaos space marines was traveling in their direction, and there was no chance that the Legion would back out. Thus Cyclonus arrived, and with Reverb on the right flank formed the detachment into a battle line, awaiting the momentary conflict))
Lists:
CSM:
Note there are a few proxies, but everything is pretty close (making use of a lot of the Dark Vengeance models).
We used the chaos lord as Kharn the betrayer (since the DV model rocks), and the Fallen Dark Angles were used for the ranged marines and obliterators. I had originally given the havocs flakk missiles, but since I didn’t take any flyers in this list, I switched it for MoN on the terminators and Gift on the Prince (so the points wouldn’t go to waste).
Obsidian Legion list:
Mission 3: Big Guns never tire
WL traits: Cyclonus got counter attack in my deployment zone and Kharn auto-received unit hatred
We forgot about nightfighting after it not happening turn 1. We also rolled for mysterious objectives during the game, but I don’t think we remembered to use them ever.
Battlefield/Deployment:
Spoiler:
There were an impassible tower and cliff, three forest zones, two small ruin areas, and a few hills. Unfortunately the light is reflecting off the white paper and styrofoam.
CSM win the roll for deployment (and I don’t seize the initiative).
From right to left: forgefiend partially on the hill, havocs, cultists with Kharn (or meat shield with meat grinder), ranged marines in a forest, rhino with berzerkers, hellbrute, and rhino with CC marines. There are two objectives, one by the havocs and one under the hellbrute.
He also had the Daemon Prince in the back, and the oblits on the far left ruins.
Obsidian Legion deployment:
From left to right: Immortals with Lord, warriors with overlord Reverb partially in a forest, two ghost arks each with two HoD and 5 warriors…
…Continuing: more warriors with Cyclonus in the center ruins, tesla immortals with Lord, and veil Tek with deathmarks in the back. I had one objective that Cyclonus is standing on.
Overall Deployment (ignore the blue tape):
TURN 1:
Spoiler:
After CSM movement:
He generally moves up quick, pops smoke and flys the Prince up fast.
After CSM shooting:
Shooting goes well for him. The forgefiend (using deamonforge) and the havocs wreck my right ark, and oblits are able to pen the left ark. He gets first blood.
Necrons T1:
After necron movement:
I mostly move forward to get better range with everything.
Deathmarks aimed to flame and rapid-fire the oblits (I should have marked these guys and not the Prince), but they nearly scattered off the table.
After necron shooting:
The left flank opens up on the Prince, and is able to down him after a bunch of rapid fire, and the Tek’s ap2 lances are able to finish him off. I also open up on the cultists, and remove the majority of the unit.
Deathmarks actually manage a wound on the oblits on the far left.
TURN 2:
Spoiler:
After CSM movement:
He makes good decision, and decides to hit my right flank hard, and mostly barricade off my left flank. Termies DS in behind my lines, cultist+Kharn move up, and Rhino’s unload for the marines/berzerkers to shoot.
Another angle of my left flank:
After CSM shooting:
His shooting does pretty well again. He focuses most of his fire on my right warriors, and downs most of them and Reverb (who absorbed quite a beating). He also downs a few warriors from my small unit in the back, and blows up my other ark.
The oblits fire back at the deathmarks, and kill two with one plasma cannon hit (the survivors went to ground).
CSM assault:
Only the cultists can charge, and they declare one against the warriors….
…and after overwatch, are 12” away, and roll an 11! (That was a little too close; thankfully these warriors have a quick draw).
Necrons T2:
After necron movement:
I move my right warriors back, and move the immortals into rapid fire range of the cultists, hoping to down them and the meat grinder before he can hit combat. I also move up my left flank, trying to get some good shots on the termies with my Teks in the back.
After Necron shooting:
I unload into the culists, but between the immortals and the warriors, I wasn’t quite able to finish off kharn (he had one wound left out on his own). The lances also drop two termies. The left immortals kill some purple marines, and the warriors (without any good targets) completely wreck one rhino. The deathmarks on the other side of the field don’t do much (having gone to ground).
TURN 3:
Spoiler:
CSM T3:
After movement:
His melee units move up close, ready to wipe out my right flank with three charges. Kharn also joins the CC marines. The hellbrute, not wanting to mess with 16 rapid fire guass flayers, moves back to play rearguard.
He also tank shocks my large warrior unit, but they are fine (only had a combi-bolter, not the modeled havoc launcher).
The two oblits start to move over, while keeping the immortals in their sights.
After CSM shooting:
Most of his long range shooting aims at the immortals. The lord is able to tank most of the hits, but ends up biting it along with one warrior from a frag template.
Short range shooting also downs a few models, one of which was carrying one of my MSS.
After CSM assault:
So, you can pretty much guess what happens when Khornate units get into CC. Kharn opens up a can of you know what and takes out 6 of 8 immortals, and the marines finish them off easy. The berzerkers wipe out the warriors completely (with the help of three AP4 axes). All three victorious units consolidate towards my left flank.
Necrons T3:
After necron movement:
The deathmarks veil toward his objectives, but nearly scatter into his purple marines.
I break off cyclonus, who moves toward the Kharn’s unit. The remaining warriors and Teks move into good rapid fire posisition on the berzerkers and termies. The tesla immortals continue to head toward his objectives.
After necron shooting:
With my volume of rapid fire, I manage to completely wipe out the khorne berzerkers.
I also land a greater AP2 flamer template on 5 guys….but don’t roll a single wound. The deathmarks do a bit better and snipe two marines (including the plasma gun).
After necron assault:
I make the charge into the CC marines with cyclonus. Only the champ is engaged so he has to issue a challenge, and Cyclonus smacks him down. The marines don’t break because Kharn is fearless.
TURN 4
Spoiler:
CSM T4:
After movement:
The termies move up, hoping to assault the small 3 warrior/2 Tek unit on the ark wreckage.
The back units shift a bit for better shooting angles, and the hellbrute moves up to charge the deathmarks.
The two oblits also head towards his objectives.
After CSM shooting:
He wipes out the deathmarks with shooting (Tek doesn’t get up), and downs a few immortals with the fiend and krak missiles.
Termies also down a couple warriors (and end up failing their charge).
After CSM assaults:
So, Kharn has to issue a challenge, and Cyclonus also has to accept. We have a face-off of both warlords.
However, Kharn can’t quite wrestle his mind away from the mindshackle scarabs, and proceeds to smack himself with gorechild. The remainder of the marines hold.
Necrons T4
After necron movement:
Even though I was just able to down Kharn, the situation doesn’t look great for me. The current score is CSM: 8 (two objectives, 1st blood, and linebreaker) to Necrons: 4 (one objective and slay the WL). I need to finish off the purple marines so he can’t hold the center objective, get rid of the termies in my deployment zone, and either have the immortals alive in his deployment zone, or down one of his heavy units with my shooting.
Thus I move around as you can see, taking cover from the good AP shooting with the immortals (and get out of LoS of the oblits). The small unit of warriors and two teks move up to shoot at the purple marines. The large warrior unit fortifies my obj in the ruins and prepare to fire on the termies with the unit on the ark’s wreckage.
Some closer pics of my units:
After necron shooting:
My backfield shooting doesn’t quite manage to finish off the termies. I also don’t manage to kill any of the purple marines on the objective.
After necron assault:
Cyclonus manages to kill one marine with no wounds taken in return, but the unit holds.
TURN 5:
Spoiler:
CSM T5:
After movment:
His back units shuffle around some to get some better firing lanes.
His last terminator moves up to assault my small squad. He also tank shocks my warriors again, but they hold.
After CSM shooting:
He shoots 4 kraks, 1 multi-melta, 1 lascannon, 2 hades assault cannons, and some bolters into the immortals. I don’t lose a single one (thanks to cover saves and reanimation), but I did go to ground.
The oblits kill all the warriors by the tower with a plasma hit, but the Tek’s survive.
After CSM assault:
Miraculously, I hit with one lance in overwatch, and finish the terminator as he charges in! The Cyclonus combat is a pillow fight, and we tie with no wounds.
Necron T5:
After movement:
I move the two Tek’s away from bolter/multimelta/oblit assault cannon range. I move the warrior unit around to get as many shots into the purple squad in as possible, hoping for a chance at wiping them out. The two Tek’s in the back stay put in their cover, hoping to pop the forgefiend.
After necron shooting:
I have stroke of luck. The tesla immortals snap fire at the purple marines, and roll 5 sixes! I then roll to wound, and only get two dice above a ‘2’ (and he saves one).
My other warrior and tek shooting only manages to down one more purple marine. And the tek’s in the back don’t scratch the forgefiend.
After necron assault:
Cyclonus actually takes a wound in combat this time, but also kills two more marines. They break, but I can’t catch them with my low initiative. He hugs the wall so no AP2 shooting can see him for the next turn.
We roll the dice to see if the game continues…..and he rolls a 2. Game ends!
TURN 6:
Spoiler:
Made ya look ;P
TURN 7:
Spoiler:
Made you look again
Final views of the objectives:
Spoiler:
The purple marines hold his center objective.
His havoc squad hold his back right objective.
I hold my only objective (since rhino’s aren’t scoring, and geometry of the rhino is narrow enough to allow my base to be within 1” of a 1” diameter marker.
The Chaos Space Marines also have 1 bonus point for first blood, and the necrons have 1 point for slay the warlord.
Final score:
Obsidian Legion: 4, Chaos Space Marines: 7
VICTORY TO THE CHAOS SPACE MARINES!
Post game thoughts:
That was a pretty close game. He had me on my toes right off the first turn, when he down one ark and penetrated the other. I did enjoy playing the silver tide style, and playing necrons without any units from fast attack nor heavy support is definitely tricky. A few things didn’t go my way (like deathmark scatter, not quite finishing off Kharn), but nothing really big completely tipped the scales. I probably should have not moved up into rapid fire range on turn 2 on the left, and hugged forest, hoping for one more turn of shooting and failed charges, but the opportunity to rapidfire cultists was too great. Unfortunately, my last turn of shooting didn’t do so hot, and thus I couldn’t kill off the last three purple marines, which would have been a tie.
I also really like the new chaos. It is pretty tricky to run a bunch of Khornate units in rhinos, since you have to plan at least two full turns ahead since you can’t disembark out of a rhino and charge. Although the Deamon Prince died on the first turn, he absorbed about 3/4 of my army’s shooting (since I couldn’t risk letting him charge whatever he wanted on turn 3. Overall, I think the codex is pretty solid, so a bunch of options to make whatever style of army you see fit.
I was able to use the CSM army twice more the day after, and won against both Tau and Orks, so it is definitely doing well.
((Cyclonus began chasing the chaos space marines, eager to finish the squad off. However, he looked up and the forces of chaos in the backfield began to fall back with two safe’s of what was surely necron tech. He checked his ship’s sensors, and discovered that Imperial guard artillery had just moved into position to shell the field. The overlord gave the order, and the remaining Legion forces also began their withdraw to vacate the impending shelling. Hopefully, whatever was in the ancient codes of the only secured safe would be worth it, but only time would tell.))
Thanks everyone for reading!

Didn't even get to the report...saw an engineering pad and my eyes welled up with tears remembering slaving over those things in college...now to read the report...
Great game and glad to see the Chaos Marines working so well with such a diverse list. Really pleased with how Berzerkers work now with their axes and all.

Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum.

Tough luck there. Though, this does give me an idea of how Silver Tide may fare against certain conditions. Maybe if you had more Immortals, it might have made a difference?
Anywho, great battle report!

For the immortals at the cultists, I think i rolled below average, but nothing horrible from what I remember.
For a proper silver tide, i think the goal is to use all warriors, so that the model count is even higher. I didn't quite have that many warriors, so I used my immortals to hold down the two ends, with the res orbs/ghost arks to provide major reanimation buffs to both warrior units (but didn't quite work that way in this game). But ya, a deep striking heavy flamer is definitely not fun for necron warriors.
