Hello all!

As a celebration of the first milestone in painting this army i decided to start a log for them. This first milestone is completing the troop choices for the army i'm making (more details on that to come.) I say oldschool because this army wont have alterations to the ultramarines look. red helmets on sergeants, no extra markings to make a DIY second founding chapter. Just straight up, good old fashion Ultramarines. I will post more details on the army later, more pics as i go along. Next should the sternguard units but i am waiting on some parts to come in. I welcome all questions, comments, concerns, anything! let me know!

So without further stalling. my marines! (my painting is ok, table top quality, that is all)

That's some nice painting, they look a little clean for my taste, but that's the old school look.
Your bases are top notch, they look really natural =)

I like what I can see, but I feel like your photography is suffering a little bit. Right now you're picturing them against a blue backdrop, which makes them look a little murky and some of their color is really lost. I don't know if it's a blue cloth or that's just the lighting, but you should try shooting them against white or light grey with lots of light. Large paper will do great, as will cloth or what have you!

Thanks. The bases are from Dragon Forge Design. Though you make a good point about the cleaness of the models. I was kind of going for that look but also because my lack of method for a good "roughed up look." Anybody have any good tips or links for detailed tips on how to thicken up paint to make it looked like old, caked on mud and not just brown paint on models? As well as any tips or tricks to add cuts, dings, chipped paint to models?

Oldschool? Pffft!

Where's the beakie squads? Where're the phobos pattern bolters? The shoulder mounted heavy weapons?

All kidding aside, they look great, but the photographing is off. Set up a white background and surface. Just some printer paper or paper towels is all I use. Works wonders.

Theres some beakies... lol. i know what you mean though. I guess i should clerify it more as a first founding chapter look. no DIY mods, 2nd founding chapter deviations. But thanks

Well you can add a brown wash to crevices for general dirt
Or since your base looks dry you could lightly dry brush that same light colour used for the dirt on their boots and knees to represent dust.
Or you can create chips with boltgun silver on exposed edges.

But really its all up to taste, some people like really grimy while others like the clean look =)
