To mix glow in the dark paint, with GW paints, to create glow in the dark minis?

It might tone the glow down. But, there should be some glow paints you can get of various colours. No real need to mix it with the GW paints.

I don't really no what is available in the glow in the dark market, in terms of coloured paints, i was considering making a radioactive looking tyranid army!

Yeah i figured that much, this is all entirely theoretical at the moment, as I am about 11302 miles away from the hobby at the moment and all I am left with is brainstorming ideas for my new Hive Fleet when I return in 11 months time.

That is unless someone has tried this before....

Wouldn't the novelty wear off fairly quickly? I mean asking for the lights to be turned off every time you want to show it off will get a bit tedious.

It would defiantly be more of a gimmick than anything, maybe I should house rule that glow in the dark models, negate night fighting.

And I'm easily amused so, probably not.

Painting unit markings, lenses etc might be cool. Also gun sights and things.

I was thinking of just maybe doing the fleshy parts on the Tyranid bodies, make them look like they have a radioactive core

couldn't you just paint them as normal, and then go over them with a UV marker?

It was my understanding that glow in the dark particles are slightly radioactive (i.e. not dangerous in these concentrations.) Therefore, I would imagine mixing them with any other opaque paint would tend to cover the particles up and make them no longer glow. I may be mistaken as I don't have any experience in this, but it might be somehting to look for.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but aren't there glow in the dark paints that are either clear or nearly see through? Could you just make your flesh more intense than normal, then put the glow stuff on top? It would probably muddy up highlights/shadows, but it's another option.

Lol. Glow in the dark paint USED to contain trace amounts of Uranium, but that's no longer the case.

The idea of painting your minis in glow in the dark paint is interesting, but most acrylic glow paints are typically very faint in color. Yes, you can mix in normal acrylic paints, but that tones out the glow.

I would suggest doing what I did and get some Fluorescent acrylics (Amazon). Check out my gallery for what I've got going on. Looks nice under normal lighting, but looks freakin' cool under a UV light.
Or research Dayglow pigments (looks all fluorescent glowy under normal lighting conditions from what I gather).

Food for thought.

They do look awesome, the only problem I could see with that for me would be the lack of access to a UV light, where as i can always turn off the light, to show off my gimmick, I'll have a look into day glow paints, they sound interesting. Thanks.

To be fair three out of the four places I play are either my house, my friends house or another friends garage, so its easy enough to say night fightings in, lights out. Ooooo look at me glowy nids!

Have you got any pictures of said monolith?

Ooooo...evil glowing monolith....

Well, I found this a long while back. Haven't attempted utilizing it yet, because life got in the way. But if you try it, I want updates, k?

http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2011/10/tutorial-using-dayglow-colors.html

I gotta tell you to look around the rest of that website too, another great place for tutorials and such.

On the side of a UV light, I'm here in the states and got a battery operated one from Spencers, so I would assume any party supply store in your end of the world would do just fine.

EDIT:

AHA! Found it:
The blog writer @ massivevoodoo sells this: http://forgedmonkey.com/products-page/hobby-supplies/
Big bags of the good stuff: http://kremerpigments.com/shopus/index.php?lang=ENG&list=010701

EDIT2:

Issue with any fluorescent or dayglow colors will be color-fastness: How long the colors stay vivid. Now typically, this only really pertains to paints that are often exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time. This usually isn't the issue with our hobby, but if you're worried: put down a layer of UV resistant clear varnish when you're all done. This negates the effect of a fluorescent color under a UV light, but I expect dayglow will still be quite vivid.

More food for thought, if applicable.

Wow those day glow paints do look pretty damn cool, and I suppose by using them it becomes slightly less of a cool one of gimmick, and actually becomes part of the army, Hmmm you have just made this a real possiblity, however like I said earlier in this thread I am AWOL from the hobby for the next 12 months-ish so it will be a while before any of this comes to a reality.

In the old fluff, salamander squad markings were done in shades of color only visible to people who could see down farther in the IR spectrum. It might be cool to do something like that, where parts of your paint job only show up in the dark or under a UV light.

Hey, I'm happy to help. Didn't get to play for a very long time, so I only had painting to do. And no nearby hobbyists either, so that also meant learning things via the internet, research, etc.

Nevelon's idea is pretty cool too. Brings an interesting it of character to an army, if so you chose.

Get back, show off the wonderful ideas that blossomed from being away, beat the hell out of competition. Sounds like a plan to me.

A simple way to get a blacklight to be portable are blacklight flashlights that people use to find scorpions out here. Arizona is a frightening place that way. Not nearly as bad as Australia, apparently. At least it's easy to avoid those hoop snakes. Either way, this is what I'm talking about.

Additionally, I just checked out those Tyranids you made, and they are brilliant. I like that the green is pretty muted when under normal light. Just looks like a jungle green paintjob. Pretty great stuff.
