Hi all, i've just started a space wolves army and i used army painter wolf grey as a basecoat, i now think after doing half a dozen models its too blue. I did messa round with various shades of light blue to greys before deciding on army paint spray.

The wolves on the front of the box are still blue but a bit lighter.

My question is this, should they be blue or grey?

That's a potential can of worms: have read a few threads on it so far and opinion is divived on the subject, as the colours are somewhat midway between those two. I`m currently running a mixture of 3-2 vallejo model color pale greyblue and azure. I think greyblue is a good match for GW`s current Fenrisian Grey. Once they`re ready I plan to hit these with a glaze of the pale greyblue. Note that lighting conditions here aren`t great right now so it looks a shade more blue than it actually is.

That blue isn`t doing your terminators any harm though . Just look what has your personal feel. If you like a more blue tone on your model, then just roll with it. If you want it more grey...hit it with some glazes.
Have to agree that the basing is pretty darn sweet

Whereas to an englishman the taking of a sledgehammer to crack a nut is a wrong decision and a sign of mental immaturity, to a russian the opposite is the case. In russian eyes the cracking of nuts is clearly what sledgehammers are for.

The first SW model I painted was my rune priest and I mixed my own color, its a pretty cool looking pale grey with a hint of blue, but a year later when I finally got around to painting the rest of the army I had totally forgotten how I mixed the colors. So I just went with GWs foundation paint Fenris grey for the main coat.

I always thought it looked a little too blue until I played against an Ultramarine army. I no longer have the feeling that its too blue and its a nice middle ground between a pale grey and blue.

See pics of my Orks, Tau, Emperor's Children, Necrons, Space Wolves, and Dark Eldar here:

hey, i might paint ultramarines too, that way my blue grey wolves won't look so blue.

Thanks for the feedback on the base, its just a mix of railway scenery flock on pva with army painter snow(its like tiny balls of snow) sprinkled in places.

GW themselves have changed the tone slightly of Space Wolves over the years, so there's nothing really set in stone even if you want to follow their own schemes.

I tend to prefer a darker grey SW, I think it's a colour that better matches the deeper reds, yellows, bones and golds I associate with Space Wolves. But that's possibly because I initially painted a more blue-grey SW army before I knew how to paint as well as I can now and learnt to despise the colour. But then again, I've seen a few SW armies painted blue-grey that I've liked as well.

From the fluff they went from stormy grey towards icey blue over the centuries. I personally paint my guys like the marines from the front of prospero burns. Storm cloud grey with lighter grey and white highlights.

It's not the size of the blade, it's how you use it.

The guy in my local gw store suggested paint them codex grey, he said fenis grey was too blue for him.

Looking at mine again they look ok and i definatly want blue grey rather than just grey, just worried the 'blueness' will haunt me after finishing the army.

Personally I went with Adeptus Battlegrey for mine. It's still slightly blue and a bit darker. It gives a look similar to the artwork on the front of the SW Codex. But I've seen ones I've liked in Fenris Grey as well. Codex Grey would give a very grey looking grey, not really any blue at all. I do like a sort of blueish grey, just not as blue as the old Shadow Grey.

Hi there again, just an update with the wolves.

I think im gonna stick with the army painter blue with vallejo azure highlights and etherium blue dry for dry brush highlights.

They may look a bit blue but in real light they are not too bad. I prefer it to just a grey wolf look.

Its army painter wolf grey, with black wash (GW), then highlight with vallejo azure (blue) and last of all a dry brush of etherium blue (one of the dry paints from GW).

I've had good and bad things said about the blue wolves but i think what matters most is if Im happy with them.

I think its everyones opinion at the end of the day.

I went through a few methods with this.

First model I painted was done to the old GW 50/50 mix of Shadow grey and Space wolf grey. Turned out great but I could be that consistent though out my army.

I then next tried the Army painter rout, this looked good but the spray sometimes drys before hitting the model causing it to go like a powder very annoying! I still use it on vehicles.

I now use the current GW paint method shown on their website, this is easy as no mixing required and comes out as a good colour that I like.
