So back in the days of 3rd edition GW had a fun little unit called the Last Chancers. 12 IG sentanced to death who were sent on the most suicidal missions with the promise of freedom if they succeed. They could either be fielded as an amazingly ineffective squad with miss-matched weapons and no focus, or they could be an army on their own, taking on 1000 points of enemy models with just 12 T3 guardsmen.

You could pick the mission, you got a long list of special rules, but you still had little or no hope... It could be fun but I remember their initial battle report where the players admitted cheating several times to give the Chancers... well a chance.

In the 3.5 IG codex they became a bizzare unit that was probably the most customizable thing the IG ever had, you could even give them psy powers!

And in 5th they were taken out entirely just counting as a penal legion despite having weapons penal squads could not buy.

So I'm submitting them as home-brewed unit for 6th edition.

Summary

For 200 points you get 11 hardened vets + an officer with a variety of weapons.
They can be divided into up to 4 units but only give up VPs if the officer is killed.
They can infiltrate, scout and have stealth.
They are fearless as long as the Colonel is alive.

The Last Chancers 200 Points

The Last Chancers are an elite choice for the Imperial Guard and must be bought exactly as listed.

Colonel Schaeffer
WS4 BS4 S3 T3 W3 I4 A3 Ld9 Sv 4+

Last Chancer
WS4 BS4 S3 T3 W1 I3 A1 Ld8 Sv 5+

Wargear
Lasgun, Las pistol, CC Weapon, Frag, Krak

Transport
You may buy one Chimera. The Chimera does not gain scout or infiltrate.

Special Rules
Flexible - Before deployment the 12 Last Chancers may be divided into up to 4 squads consisting of 1-12 models.

Expendible - The Last Chancers already face a death sentence, only Col Schaeffer is worth 1 VP.

Iron Discipline - As long as the Colonel is alive the Last Chancers are fearless. If he is killed then the Imperial player may choose to detonate the collar of one Last Chancer at the start of the movement phase, the remainder are fearless for the duration of that turn.

Detonate - All Last Chancers wear explosive collars or shackles which may be detonated by Colonel Schaeffer, by distant overseers. If a Last Chancer is detonated remove the model, all models in base-to-base contact take a S4 hit (save normally).

Stealth

Scout

Infiltrate

Individual Last Chancers

Colonel Schaeffer is armed with a master crafted power sword and a plama pistol.
Special Rules:
He may issue 2 orders to a Last Chancers Unit (only) within 12"
His orders are: Bring it Down, Furious Charge (squad gain FC for the remainder of the turn)
Detonate - At the begining of any shooting phase he may deonate the explosive collar on any Last Chancer(s).

(the rest to come)

Just a thought, since they are given the most insanely hard to complete missions, what about a way to earn an extra VP, for example, if the enemy Warlord costs at least 200 points (ie Eldrad) Slay the Warlord gives you an additional VP, if killed by the Last Chancers.

Or possibly something like that one SW unit who does not give up a VP if killed, only if still alive.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

No but using him means you have to bring Fosters for everyone.

For Fingers, should you specify that experimental ammo only works on ranged weapons?

Mmm +1 S Demo Charge.

Good thought on ranged weapons, and yes S9 demo charges are totally cool. Best of all they make Fingers and Demo man totally expendible after the bomb goes off.

And here's another idea...

SUICIDE MISSION

The Last Chancers are cinematic heroes and take on only the dirtiest roughest missions.

Rather than play a normal mission you may instead pit the Last Chancers alone against an entire army. Your oppoent may take up to 1000 points (or more with your permission), you take only the Last Chancers.

OK and a Chimera. But that's it.

In order to give them well... a chance, the following rules apply.

Choose your moment: The Last Chancer player may choose the mission, deployment and sides from any mission in the BRB.
Tough guys: All Last Chancers gain +2 wounds (ie 3 for a Last Chancer, 5 for Col Schaeffer), Eternal Warrior and Independent Character. In this case they are each worth 1 Kill Point.

lol That is a crazy set of rules. I'm kinda sad that I traded off my last chancers now. That would be just fun to try.

What do you think, too many special rules?

Or should I have gone nuts and given all 12 of them special rules?

Tactically I think they're interesting enough, IG players would get some nice MSU choices that can tank hunt or assault, or shoot, but they're still squishy little guardsmen so no one should cry cheese.

I like this, and I also believe that you should also use the 3.5 codex for more "generic" Last Chancers in addition to these "special character" ones.

So for Fingers, does his special rule mean that if he is hit with a stingray he is automatically removed, with no saves?

I am a big fan of the last chancers and wrote rules for them myself back in 5th. I had it so when using them as a suicide force they performed their mission during a battle between two forces with their “allied” force paying 500 points for them. They had a completely separate objective during a normal battle that was concealed from their opponent.

I should have figured I wasn't the first!

Yeah they are just a fun idea for a unit, I have some stray LCs from trades and ebay lots but never bought them (see my bit about worthless rules up top). If I thought someone would let me use these rules I'd buy them in a heartbeat.

Anyway, other thoughts on how these work? I know I ignored a lot of the original LC rules, for example moving Brains' rule to Hero because honestly look at Hero's face, don't you just want to see him die?

Still thinking of special rules for the few who didn't get them.

Animal-hatred (everyone)
Scope-BS5?
Demo Man-Russian (all normal rules for Russians apply)

I'm liking this. I wish I hadn't given my Last Chancers to a friend

in Inquisitor, a Space Marine can take a krak grenade, pull out the pin, eat the grenade, throw the pin, and the thrown pin will actually kill a normal man, whereas the Space Marine won't even have indigestion. This has actually happened in a game. Hell, a marine can throw his bolt shells and do more damage than by shooting his boltgun

Nice solid set of rules imo, not too OTT but I think it captures the original Last Chancers very well

How's this for the 3 who got left out:

Animal-hatred (everyone)
Scope-BS5
Demo Man-Big Boom (Demo Man carries an inordinate amount of explosives into battle. If Demo Man is killed place a large blast template on the model, every model touched takes a S5 hit)

OK, last thoughts on Animal, I think I will go back to his original special rules.

Animal - Lightning reflexes (4+ invulnerable, base 2 attacks)

Any thoughts or ideas before I put this together as an article?

At a guess (or rather a suggestion) -1S AP3. Theyr small enough that they won't be getting the full weight of a swing in, but with the AP of say a sword (Cutting and even though smaller, they can probably fit in between soft parts of armour).

Stuff like Last Chances is what I like about the IG. Too bad most of the IG players I've seen are Vendettas all day every day.

I don't like the idea of giving them like 3 wounds, BS 5 and such. They're meant to be regular dudes... badass dudes, but still human (edit: I thought the BS 5 was for all of them. If Snipy Mcgee has it that looks good to me!)

+1 S is also a bit too generic (and weak) for 'special ammo' - maybe let them buy, or roll on a table, to get stuff like poisoned weapons or armourbane?

 Grunt13 wrote:

This is a fantastic idea. Give them a couple of secret mission cards to draw from, such as "destroy the single most expensive vehicle in your opponents force".

I'll give your article a read through later on when I have time, sounds pretty good sofar.

I can only think of a few minor changes (the majority of the rules are awesome!)

Hero - Maybe let the other Last Chances in his 'group' take an LOS roll and allocate the hit to him if it passes (Hero takes the shot for them)

Scope - BS5 and all his shots are Precision Strikes, may infiltrate as a one man squad

Grease Monkey - May repair or hot wire any wrecked vehicle (belonging to either side) on a 2+. If the vehicle is wrecked or explodes while he is aboard, he takes a hit as if he were a passenger.

Fingers - Experimental Ammo

Roll a D3 after deployment but before the first turn. All Last Chancer las weaponry (and Ox's heavy bolter) gain one of the following rules:

1 - Fleshbane
2 - Salvo 2/4 (3/6 in case of Ox's heavy bolter)
3 - Rending

Chaos Space Marines - Iron Warriors & Night Lords 7900pts
