Subject: Road to Adepticon TT - Sons of Horus Pre-Heresy (Going right down the wire here.. marathon time!)

Hey all, I've decided it would be fun to keep a P&M blog detailing the work that I'll be doing towards my Adepticon team's army. We're doing a Chaos list which will be modeled as being heresy-era. Each 1000 points will be one of the four legions present at Isstvan III, so that means Sons of Horus, Death Guard, Emperors Children, and World Eaters.
I just started working on my first batch of marines to get the ball rolling. Here's what I've done so far. I'm using a variety of bits and models I've had laying around for a while. I'm using a lot of AoBR guys, along with lots of CSM parts and some WoC stuff as well.
So before I even started putting guys together I found a bunch of WoC helmets I had and filed them all down. I also just went through all the AoBR and used my dremel to grind off their chest acquillas and tactical squad shoulder arrows just to get that out of the way first. For the first guy I also shaved his head off so that I could drop a WoC helmet in place. After reading an article on BoLS I picked up some microbeads at the craft store to make the studded pre-heresy armor out of it. Basically I followed that BoLS to do this part, I'm using a pin to poke guide holes then a pin vice with a thin drill bit to make a hole deep enough for somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of the ball to be countersunk into the armor. I'm also using CSM backpacks as those are era accurate. This is what I came out with:
I resumed where I left off the next day, and I kind of decided the WoC helmet was too boring/out of place by itself. So I added some guitar wire and GS along with a top knot. I also made a second guy shown here and started work on a 3rd that is not pictured:
Much more to come.. this is going to be pretty cool for me, as I've always wanted to make a pre-heresy army. Hopefully some of you guys enjoy this as well.

Ok here's an overdue update. I had to get my necrons ready for the Colonial GT so I didn't have much time lately to work on this army.
First - we changed the list a bit so I had to swap out the weapons on the guys I had made already for bolters.
The next issue was trying to figure out what to use as pre-heresy Helldrakes. We wanted to do something that was cost effective since we needed 4. After a lot of internet browsing, I stumbled upon a storm talon conversion that I thought looked pretty cool. We'll be doing some additional conversions on it to account for the vector strike and bale flamer. Basically the conversion requires the storm talon and then some drop pod bits. It's quite easy to put together and I think it makes the storm talon kit look great. I'd recommend it for any number of uses.
So here's the first two storm talons ready for the conversion work to start. I finished these yesterday, conveniently my drop pod bits came today.
So here's the first one with the new wings attached. I attached the wing a bit differently than the tutorials I had seen. Both of them involved cutting off the little strip on the talon engines. I kept that in place and simply mounted the wing directly under it. I think this is just an easier idea which actually looks better and it can help conceal an uneven wing edge if you didn't make the wing cut perfectly flat.
Still figuring out what to use for the flamer. Also considering adding grappling hooks under the wings. Much more to come..

Ok so once again I had to focus a hit on my Necrons to get them ready to go for the Colonial GT this weekend.
I did get around to testing out a Sons of Horus scheme though. Across the Internet there seems to be about a hundred variations on how to paint them, but many involve a lot of mixing or hard to find paints, neither of which I have the time for. So one of the tutorials I found I liked a lot and I'm pretty happy with the output. in a nutshell the order is prime white, base celestial grey (that might be the wrong name, whatever is the super light grey gw base paint), then wash with watered down biel-tan green and then watered down nuln oil.

Here's a few updates.
So first up, I added an additional set of wings to the pre-heresy drake. I'm pretty happy with this, mostly just have to throw the flamers on and it should be pretty set to go. It actually is very close to the actual drake's footprint. Just have to repeat this 3 times:
We also came up with what to do about the plague zombies. We're going to make combat servitors. To make them, we're using some warpath orcs that one of the guys on the team had. Over the weekend he passed a couple sprues of the warpath orcs to me, and this is what I came up with on first go:

Nice models.
Love them servitors, looks very ... serf like.
Them drakes look pretty solid as well, adding them drop pod fins makes them look pretty damn nifty.
Cool army, looking forward to it.
Friendly advice, read my signature.

Ok time for a big update. we're about a week away and still have lots of work to do. Admittedly, I got a bit sidetracked when bioshock came out /facepalm.
So here so an update that actually stretches back to Monday through today.
Monday: to start off the day I met up with my teammate Luke. I gave him two of the storm drakes to paint (he's handling the death guard and emperors children). I also had a bunch if ccw bits for him to use to make our cultists out of. our plan is to make robed chapter serfs for the cultists., and for each legion to have a certain weapon type. EC will have dark elf sabres, DG will have scythes, WE will have axes and flails, and SoH will have chainswords. I finished all 36 combat servitors (counts as plague zombies). these were made with warpath orcs but heavily converted. a lot of guitar wire, bitz box rummaging, and effort went into making these guys look really cool. later that night I also based all 36 along with our juggernaut bases and my obliterator bases. Here's a pic of the servitors after I got done converting the last guy.
Tuesday: I primed and base coated everything in my portion of the army (the Sons of Horus) along with primed all the servitors. here's a shot from the end of the day after lots of painting.
Wednesday: I spent the earlier part of the days running around stores tracking down some non-army things my team needed. namely tshirts, cloth for a banner, and fabric paint. I didn't feel well when I got home so I lost some time but I did get around to painting my stormdrake. I'm pretty happy with the end result, still needs some touch up and freehand but here's how it came out.

Another day closer and another update.
To start the day off I had a bit of clean up to do on my stormdrake, namely the underslung flamer. Nothing too exciting so I didn't bother photoing that.
After that I spent a large portion of today on my chaos lord. It's one of the forge world jetbikes to be a counts as juggernaut.
After that I spent some time on the first of my 3 obliterators. For our pre-heresy army, we're using old space crusade dreads as stand ins. They're a little bit bigger but pretty cool stand ins IMO.
Now I'm working on the last 8 marines I have to finish. After that I still have 2 more oblits, 36 servitors and 4 techpriests to paint. A few minor things also but those are the main tasks. This is going to be a a fun week ahead.

Ok here's today's update. I am pretty much finished with my 18 marines. I still have a few backpacks and a banner to paint for them, but that's about it. Here's a progress shot of the squad.
I have to go to St. Louis for a business trip tomorrow through Monday, which is going to really suck time out of my next few days unfortunately. I am planning to bring stuff with me though so that I can paint in between meetings.
At this point my main check list is the following:
-Finish scultping, prime, base & paint 4 Mechanicus Tech-Priests
-Paint 36 Servitors
-Paint 7 Space Marine backpacks & 1 banner
-Paint 2 Obliterator/Dreads
-Paint 4 t-shirts & team banner
-Pray teammates get all their stuff done
After that, just basically look over the army and check for any needed touch up and slap on some freehand here and there. It's going to be down to the day we leave almost certainly, but hopefully I can make serious progress on the servitors while I'm in St. Louis.
