I already have one Warriors of Chaos army. It's the first army I painted when I started the hobby again after a 12 year hiatus and the painting shows. It's not bad but it's nowhere near as good as what I can do today.

Well with the new Warriors of Chaos book there are a great many awesome new models and it's time for me to start a new Warriors of Chaos army. This time rather than being Nurgle themed it's going to be a more general horde of Northmen (with the occasional Nurgle character thrown in).

If you frequent the Painting showcase you may have seen my new Lord...

Painted him in a single night the day I bought him (which was the day he was released). He's a great model and his cloak and base turned out great. I'm not so fond of his face or the metallics. However this is fine because part of the point of this army is to get better at my metallics!

For the last 9 hours I've been working on my new Gorebeast Chariot (I should really be sleeping but whatever).

I spent ages on the Gorebeast and really picking at the metallics. I think I've managed to improve and they look good. I spent a few hours searching the interwebs for articles on how to paint gold and I went with a Ghennas Gold base coat with a purple wash for shading then highlighting up through Auric Armour Gold to a 50/50 mix of Auric Armour Gold and Runefang Steel. The most important take away I had from all the gold tutorials was to shade with purple and it made a huge difference.

The Gorebeast itself was the result of some drybrushing and then making a great many mistakes and covering them up with washes. I honestly can't describe how I got him the way I did as I tried so many things I completely lost track of what I was doing.

The chariot itself needs something special I think. I might try and make it look like the Gorebeast has kicked up a ton of snow and mud but at the moment it looks very boring with nothing to catch the eye.

The crew are still on the sprue. Not decided how to put them together yet.

No pictures today but I do have an open question that I hope somebody might have some insight on:

I'm planning on fielding a unit of Trolls in the future but I really don't like the metal Chaos Trolls and would rather not use the River Trolls.

While sourcing parts to build my ridiculous 500 point DaemonPrince I bought the LOTR Isengard Troll box for its breastplate and shield. I noticed the scale seems big enough that it could fit on a 50mm monster base and it's a far nicer model than any of the GW trolls (Except for Throgg). Does anybody know if the Moria Cave trolls are about the same size and if there are any rules at tournaments or anything about using LOTR models in your Fantasy army? Obviously for friendly games it's not an issue and the last thing I can find on the net about it is about 3 years old so thought I might ask.

Anyway a quick update on the models on my painting table for this army...

I have a box of Spawn to assemble for those inevitable snake eyes on the eye of the gods and am trying to put together a bog standard foot slogging Daemon Prince for those boxcars.

I have 5 Fenrisian Wolves who are going to be the start of my Warhound unit. They'll be painted in blue/grey tones and should fit great with the snow basing.

About 2 dozen Chaos Warriors with Shields waiting to be assembled.

2 boxes of Marauder Horsemen again waiting to be put together.

I'm about 80% of the way through a Chaos Lord of Nurgle on a Planaquin of Nurgle (From the Epidemius kit). I just need to position his legs correctly but it's proving tricky.

The crew and chariot of the Gorebeast Chariot are still waiting to be finished. Hit a real brick wall creatively with that model about how to make the chariot more interesting.

Lastly I have Festus the Leechlord sitting in the bottom of my "To Assemble" pile.

So plenty to be getting on with. If only I had more time!

I never liked the Warhound models that much so for this new warband I will be using Fenrisian wolves.

It's a shame such nice models will be taken off the table by the end of the first turn.

Chariot and Lord look really nice, the gold recipe sounds like one I need to try myself. If anything I think the chariot just needs darkened down a bit, maybe on the lower sections for a bit of contrast? Give the impression of it being more tarnished down there from running people over and the mud and gore constantly splashing up on it?

Made of Molten Rock and spitting warpflame the Prince of Hellfire was once a Sorcerer of Tzeentch.

I decided that today I wanted to paint an Eldar Avatar. However when I got to my FLGS they didn't have any. After much searching I decided to get a Necron C'Tan and paint him up as a DaemonPrince.

The model is pretty much as is but I added the cape from the Chaos Chariot kit. I tried to make the snow look like it was actively melting and really slushy as a result of the heat from his body.

I can field this guy as a DaemonPrince worth about 400 points if I wanted. I've actually plumped for mark of Nurgle rather than Tzeentch to represent the fact that he's so hot he's hard to attack in melee. Nurgles Rot represents his heat causing enemies to pass out and with Burning Body, Flaming Breath and the Dragonbane gem he's completely in character for a fluffy DaemonPrince. Chaos armour and scaled skin to represent his rocky flesh and maybe an obsidian doohickey for some magic protection.

Nice! What'd you use for that slushy snow effect?

I based it with my normal snow method which is to mix Water Effects and Snow flock together then apply with a sculpting tool then I poured a load of Water Effects on the base then sprinkled a small amount of Snow Flock onto it. The water effects absorbs the snow flock and it looks like really slushy melted snow.

I got the technique from here http://fromthewarp.blogspot.co.uk/2010/01/details-8-ways-to-base-with-snow.html

Awesome link, thanks. And looks good, like the idea behind it. Will have to yoink that technique for my own snow bases if I want to go meltier.

Not a lot of progress on the army recently as I have been waiting on some bits to arrive and for a birthday to resupply me with plastic.

Put this regiment together with my first shipment of Space Wolf Heads and all my left over Knight Lances.

Known as Strijders van de Wolf which is a google translation of Warriors of the Wolf into Dutch so I apologise if it's wrong!

The wolf theme is continuing through the warband and I really want to push away from the stereotypical Chaos Warrior "Spikes, Skulls and No Personality" look. My force will remain mostly unmarked to maximise numbers as their first outing will be a tiny local campaign that alternates between 600 and 1000 point games with the last week in each month being doubles matches.

I wanted to try and field a strongly themed force for this campaign so have decided to take the Wolf thing and run with it. Arriving in the mail are some Thunderwolves, about 40 more Space Wolf heads (at 5p each!) a bunch of Space Wolf bits that will easily fit into fantasy. I am going to invest in some Forgeworld Skin Wolves to use as Spontaneous Daemon Princes (Blessed with Lycanthropy) and a whole bunch more Fenrisian Wolves to help bulk out my core.

My current plan is to field units of Warhounds with Exalted Heroes on Daemonic Mounts (ThunderWolves) in them. The Warhounds give the Hero some ablative wounds on the way in to absorb BS shooting and if they make it into combat with him they may even provide enough ranks and models to deny a rank bonus during a flank or rear assault. There is also the added benefit of an Exalted Hero on a Daemonic Mount now gaining +1 Toughness and a +1 wound now Daemonic Mounts changed to T5 and 3 wounds. For 35 points you can make that Hero as tough to kill as a Lord and immune to Stomp attacks. More importantly it will look awesome.

I am also planning a conversion of Njal Stormcaller into a Sorceror Lord using the Lore of Shadows, his Crow can be a Chaos Familiar (or in low points his staff can be a channelling staff) and being covered in Runes and wolf pelts will fit the rest of the force. Making his armour look more fantasy-eqsue shouldn't be too hard with some green stuff either.

Really nice, bold painting - your colour choices are great - and some very effective conversions. You're going to have a cracking army when you're done. I'll be keeping a close eye on this blog I think!

Been distracted recently by various videogames so haven't been painting with the same pace that I normally have.

Tonight I put the finishing touches to the armour of my Warriors.

I'm trying to make them look a little poorer than the Lord so their equipment has rusted slightly and lost the highly polished look my Lord has.

Local Fantasy Campaign starts in 2 weeks and I need to get this unit, the Gorebeast Chariot and my Hero on Dire Wolf painted by then. Should be able to get this and the chariot done but not sure about the hero as I'm still working on the conversion and need to do something about his saddle.

Tomorrow marks the beginning of a Fantasy Campaign for 12 weeks near me. Games start at 600 points so for week one this is what I will be taking...

Hero on Daemonic Mount with a Charmed Shield
12 Warriors with Champ, Banner, Shields, Halberds, Mark of Khorne
2 units of 5 warhounds
A Gorebeast Chariot

Not pictured: Required Daemon Prince and Spawn "just in case"

I've been like a butterfly on this project I keep doing little bits on many different units yet never finishing anything...

I needed a sorcerer for the campaign when it goes up to 1000 points so decided to convert one from a Coteaz model I had sitting around.

It was fairly simple to remove the sci-fi bits and cover up anything I couldn't remove (like the pistol hoslter) with some wolfy bits.

Next up is a close up of my Hero on Daemonic Wolf who has the honour of leading my forces in this campaign.

Thunderwolf, Wolf Guard storm shield, Chariot cape, Grey Hunter Head and the legs, body and arms from a Chaos Knight.

Lastly an update on one of the models that started it all: The Gorebeast Chariot...

I'm nearly finished with it. The driver is done and has been glued in place leaving just the warrior and the flags/skulls on the chariot to do.

Wow I love converted armies and yours is great! Simple head swaps and the use of different hounds works fantastically.
And that subtle cortez conversion is awesome! he fits in perfect!

I use Galeforce 9 snow flock mixed with Vallejo Still Water about 50/50. Then I sprinkle some of the flock over the snow on the base to make it look more fluffy.

I don't do commission work but thanks for asking

If I'm honest my painting isn't consistent enough to do work for other people. I rarely remember how I achieve an effect or how I painted something so it's quite hard for me to reproduce good paint jobs on demand. I also don't have enough time for all my own painting projects as it is without taking on other people's.

I've actually painted far more than this blog shows now. I have something like 2k points painted up so I'll try and get back on top of taking pictures.

This guy however is still WIP. He's my Chaos Warshrine and occasional BSB.

I really don't know why your blog isn't getting more interest.your work it's superb and highly inspirational. I am converting a stonehorn myself to function as a wardrobe in my own army so it's great to see the same concept executed so well!

Please post more pics!!
