So I have been working on some orks with a different way of painting them. The skin is just done with a base coat of white and heavy washing, how ever I am not sure on if I like it or not.... What do you guys think. I am a newer painter and would like to see what I need to improve on.

First - not bad overall. However, a couple things leap out -

1. Get a pin vice and drill the barrels on the weapon - after you remove the mold line.

2. Skin tone looks good - but you need a dark tone to make the shadows pop. Not sure what paints you are using, but a good black might work.

I think it looks great, all I'd suggest would be the barrels and maybe a wash or something on the top knot to put some definition on it. The rest is spot on mate, keep it up.

Going to disagree with steelcult - I think the shadows are quite natural, as they are. If you want to make the skin pop, highlights, not further shading (let alone with pure black) are the way to go. Even just some very fine lines to bring out the veins, sinew, and a bit more definition on the face would increase the depth, considerably; it's a range, after all, not an absolute value - pushing the highlights lighter adds as much contrast as pushing the shadows deeper, and would look more natural, I think.

I agree with all other points, though, from the work needed on the gun to the quality of the overall impression (especially for a newer painter).

Just a tad more detail and highlighting as mentioed on this boss model and its golden ..that being said this would be excellent for the boyz ..no further detailing required..

GW's old Snot Green (not sure what the new equivalent is)/VGC Sick Green is relatively vivid, without being too much brighter than the high points already are. If you really want to push them brighter, you can step up to the equivalent of Goblin Green - that's what I usually use for my extreme highlights on Ork skin, although I dilute it a decent bit and use a final green glaze over the top, so it ends up being a bit darker and richer than it would be straight out of the bottle. With the whole model being somewhat dark, though, I'd err on the side of caution while highlighting, lest you end up giving him "watermelon syndrome" (my term for super high-contrast ork skin, which I think looks garish and unnatural, even for an imaginary mutant space-fungus with a penchant for showing off).
