So here we have my kitbashed Kharn and the ex-commissar model from DV.

Comment, criticize, just let me know what you think. Oh, and I'm painting the army as if they're fighting at night, hence the dark tones and exaggerated OSL

They look good.

My one suggestions would be to tone down the plasma pistol's glow if possible.

Not a fan of the OSL. Looks overdone to me and the glow source isnt ... erm ... glowy enough. But thats personal preference. Well done models nevertheless .

Paint looking good other than the OSL, IMO It washes out over the bodies way too much for what it should be, along with washing out to places that the light would not travel (onto the barrel of the gun), Hard edges are going to create shadows and channel the light elsewhere. A suggestion would be to take a very small flashlight and shine it at the model where the source of the light would be. I am also inclined to say that the source of light is not big enough to pump out THAT much light.

"You are like a son and together we have all but conquered the galaxy. Now the time has come for me to retire to Terra. My work as a soldier is done and now passes to you for I have great tasks to perform in my earthly sanctum. I name you Warmaster and from this day forth all of my armies and generals shall take orders from you as if the words came from mine own mouth. But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of thought and of action.

It's supposed to represent how much light is being kicked out at night. I find it hard to believe that something with the power to eat through a tank wouldn't make someone glow in the dead of night.
I will admit I could have done the OSL much better, but this is my first real attempt.

Okay, so after a little bit of thought, what would you guys suggest I do to improve BOTH models. I'm open to absolutely ANY suggestions here as I want at least Kharn to look as good as I can possibly paint him

Start at source of glow. Make those ridges on the pp pop. There should be alot of attention on that weapon. When i look at the model i get confused. Im looking at knee pads then helm then pistol. Should be other way around. Lighting is very important. As is shadowing. The eye should be drawn to the source of the glow and then in night the reds aka back of model should be way darker for shadow. Def not the same as the front. If you need an example check out gandalf in the mines of moria

When doing OSL it's important to remember light cannot travel through solid objects. So it's important to understand where the light will be shining and where it won't as well as intensity.

Otherwise your eye's just kind of a go "Whaa?" it's not necessarily anything wrong with the paint work itself.

IE you can have just about everything around the pistol glowing however it should be very muted to give the impression of light striking the ground, armor, etc and being refracted back.

IE shining a flashlight at a white wall in the dark also lights up the opposite wall, ceiling, you, etc. Even though the flashlight is not directly projecting light it is being refracted.

However on models when done it's typically done in a very extreme fashion with no refraction. This is typically viewed as being the correct technique when actually it's incorrect.

Just look more snazzy.

I like the OSL, i imagine him in being a dark or dimly lit room and thats why the glow is so bright? Either way it looks cool to me good job

OSL is a tricky beast. The best way to do it is to imagine your light source drawing lines to each object. Can you draw a straight line to where you want it to show up? If not then that piece shouldn't be lit by the glow. If its too far it'll throw it off as well. Kudos for giving it a shot, the models look good - I'd be happy to put them out as my first models.
