Hi,
maybe you remember the limited edition paint set with paints in the colours of the Dry Paint range:

On 23rd March, these colours will finally be released as single pots. They are mail order only and cost 3.50 €, so more than the other paints. The names of the colours are:

Gauss Blaster Green
Baharroth Blue
Dorn Yellow
Fulgrim Pink
Flayed One Flesh
Dechala Lilac
Krieg Khaki
Blue Horror
Lugganath Orange

And while we are at it: Another silent release is the mail order only Monstrous Cavalry Base 75x50mm for 4.00 €.

(Now eagerly awaiting another flame war on Warseer )

Super-lame that they're MO only, but I might want to try a few of those. The yellow in particular seems like it would be worth it, for an opaque highlight, instead of needing to mix/trial & error each time.

Not to be ignorant, but what's an 'edge' paint. Is it for highlighting?

They're the same formulation as base paints, so cover well, but with paler shades suitable for edge highlights, yes.

Is that way the new line didn't have any really bright colors. To bad about the mail order I would like to see in person, as pink and purple look about right for my SDE models.

So I guess that will be what all paints will cost after the next price rise, looks like my vallejos are going to become even better value.

Also is this another product that FLGSs won't be able to stock?

If you're going to go for the jaded GW commentator approach, at least get your facts right. FLGSs can stock direct-only (or mail order) items just at a lower discount. They also get no special notification on some of them so have to order at the same time as the general populace and that means that items can sell out before they get a chance.

1.) Edge paints have the same colour than the Dry Paint range that you can see instore. They are pastell tones usable for painting edges or the last of highlights. Or if you need those pastell colours. If you don't want or need the creamy texture of Dry paints, then Edge paints are for you. Personally, I need a lot of Gauss Blaster green.
2.) Mail Order only stuff can be ordered by many stores, but at a lower discount. I don't think that it is allowed to actually stock mail order only stuff, just order it for customers, although this will probably not be checked. That said, stores have these large special racks for storing the 145 paints with no room for extra 6 paint colours, so most will not be interested in stocking these.

A good thing in regard to this is it has shown somewhere some feedback has been listened to, first of all in the creation and then making these paints available as an addition to the range.

If I used the matching dry brush material for the bases, these would be extremely useful for touching up "oopsies" if I get paint on the aforementioned dry brushed base.

@manchu the light pastels are definately good for a lot of that, but I think GW was very wide of the mark when it excluded traditional light shades for the sake of the dry paints.

They are mail order only, but not limited, like the "Death from the Skies" book

To be fair though the discount is 10% vs 45%, so its not even worth it unless they are doing you a favour. They still can, its just undesirable.

Huh, and just did some price comparing, UK pays 2.30 for paint which works out to $3.50 canadian by proper exchange but for some reason its $4.45 a pot, despite it being made in america... These mail order only paints look like they will be $6-7, not breaking the bank but still wtf?

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Actually, most FLGS get to order their stuff on mondays, so things like the DFtS book are sold out before they can order them.

Glad to see they are finally available on an individual basis. Had thought about buying the kit when it came out, but didn't feel like spending $50 for really only 4 colors I wanted. Couldn't find any equivalent among the Reaper or Vallejo lines, so happy the option is there (though if there is an equivalent, let me know).

Other reason why these are likely direct only, the GW paint rack doesn't have space for additional paints. Think there would be more gripping if GW had made it part of the standard paint line and told all stores with GW paints they needed to get a new paint rack.

I will never buy another GW paint unless I'm already committed to it (such as Tin Bitz... if I can find an old pot), after they made my whole set OOP and didn't continue to carry a match for many of the colors...

RiTides - you will hate me when I say this, but I have 4 pots of Tin Bitz. I bought a huge amount of GW paint when they made the switch.
One of the FLGS in my area was selling the old pots for $1 each.

So are edge paints suitable for painting an entire coat? The colors look nice and if they are light paints that cover well that could be a great boon for people trying to paint yellow.

I'm pretty sure the reason they are MO is because of the niche nature of the product. To the everyday painter they probably aren't going to be of interest and most of the kiddies who spend their time in GW aren't going to be interested either. If you have lines that aren't going to shift well it isn't always viable to keep them in stock. You can always order them to your local GW for no delivery charge.

Yeah, but then you add the wait to the already high price for this product. They work as impulse buys, but this move is sort of counter intuitive in that way.

Um.. yea no a few extra paints are not going to take up anything more than maybe a 30cm by 30cm by 8cm section of the already existing paint rack and you can't really consider certain paints to be a niche while others aren't. GW are mostly likely just testing the price for a future jump across the entire range while either (A) laughing at FLGS again or (B) they just don't give a crap.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Amen, preach it Brother.

I consistently keep an eye out for paints that will match armies I painted years back.. so when I add new units they match those colors.

Very frustrated at the change, but at the same time, certainly see a place for these new fomulations.. as long as they don't change em in the next 5-6 years.
