Hey guys thanks for peeking in, take a seat.

I've started this blog to help motivate me to get my new Imperial Guard army completed and into some battles. I'd also like to get some feedback on my painting and modelling. I havent played 40k since 3rd edition when I had a small, flat red SM force. I'm trying to add a bit of detail and shading to my new force so here goes. I'm pretty much picking my army based on what captures my imagination in some way rather than any grand scheme of a list. Up to now I've got the IG battleforce, a leman russ and a lovely lovely Valkyrie, mostly assembled and undercoated. Just need to make some camo cloaks for my veterans and I'm set.
I'm going for a black, white and red scheme for my force which puts me in mind of mass effect. I like to think of my army as one that spends its time out in space being sent off to one battlefield after another as opposed to an interior force like Cadians. I've done a similar paint scheme with some Heresy minis troopers and I quite like the look of it. It's futuristic and quite mean looking. I did the stripes on this guy freehand but I've got some skinny masking tape for the shoulder pads of my guardsmen so it should look a bit neater.

Since my old Space Marine army was entirely on foot I decided to start with some armour, for the novelty of the thing.

I was going to have the side sponsons on with heavy bolters but I dropped the tank after priming it and one of them broke off and just vanished. Saved me a few points I guess.
The HB can be swapped out for the other options when I get them painted and the battle cannon can be swapped for the vanquisher too which is pretty cool.
I've had a go at a bit of battle damage and weathering here and there and I removed the skull details from the back of the tank as they seemed a bit gratuitous to me.
I'm a bit worried about the decal as it doesn't blend in very well at all at the minute. Will it sort itself out when I seal it with a bit of matt varnish?

I'm leaving this side of the turret blank for kill markings. I was thinking for every squad broken or tank destroyed (and my tank is at worst immobilised by the end of the battle) I would add a tally mark, what do you reckon?

Next up is a scout sentinel.

I really like these guys and I'll be getting at least 2 more. The way the model can be posed with all the articulation in the legs is great, I've done this one resting his leg on some tank traps, scanning the horizon for enemies to shoot with the deadly... multilaser .

Just kidding, it's magnetised hurrah!

In the guard codex sentinel scout pilots are described as independent maverick type characters and I envisaged mine as veterans who might have survived being in a few sentinel wrecks down the line and managed to escape with most of their bits still attached. They're all going to have packs from the heavy weapons sprue as stowage for those extended scout missions in the field and for when they need to bail out quick.

"Damn that private Johnson and his dashing non-regulation ginger beard and mustache! He's a hot shot maverick but the best man for the job!" I think that head's off the old Empire spearmen sprue, dunno how I got hold of one though .

Thanks for reading guys, let me know what you think.
Jim.

I love the N7 stripe!!

I can't wait to see more infantry, and the painting overall is very impressive.

Thanks Dangledorf I'm afraid you may be disappointed with my troopers, they aren't going too well at the moment! I tried to do some layering but I haven't got the hang of it and I might as well drybrush the next lot. Also my brilliant masking idea didn't really work out as I can't seem to get it straight. I don't mind doing them all freehand for now but it may drive me insane later.

Hey man, the only way to get better is to slap some paint down. Still, excited to see an army of n7's.

What models are you using for your guardsmen btw? I can't seem to put my finger on the range.

The mini in the first pic is a trooper from Heresy Miniatures I was using as an example of the paint scheme. I have about six of them I've been using to play Combat Zone but I could never afford enough models to use them as guardsmen. I'm just sticking with the plastic Cadians that come with the battleforce at the minute.

'Ey up gang a bit of progress for you. I finished my first proper squad of guardsmen. Huzzah!
As always click for bigger pics as I took these on macro with my cam so you can see all my glaring errors and shaky painting
I went for grenade launchers in all my infantry squads as they look pretty versatile on paper and I can imagine them making a cool kind of "poot!" sound when fired.

The sergeant is one of those "stand at the back and shout at everyone" type of guys, maybe losing that eye has made him more cautious.

Bit of a conversion on the vox-caster. I've used some old guitar strings as an antenna and moved the loop to the side. I think it looks more balanced than the original.
This guy looks pretty smug in this picture, like he's just told the CO a dirty joke.

If you zoom in on the gallery you can see the freehand on the stripe is a little shaky but it's about as good as I can get it for now and not really noticeable en masse from tabletop range.
(I hope!)

Cheers for reading and please let me know what you think.

Hey Jim,

Really like the Sentinel, the head on the guy is really characterful. Makes me think of Scorpio from an old Simpsons episode. The infantry are looking good too.

Keep up the excellent work.

Thanks for the kind words Schmacker, I know just who you mean too!

I'm glad I got the battleforce because I've enjoyed mixing the bits from all the kits to add a bit of random character to some of the less important models. I got the head bitz set from the GW website at the same time to add some individuality to my army, though I used most of them in the sniper veterans squad.
I'm in the process of painting a heavy weapons team at the minute. I'll see if I get a better result with the drybrush this time.

+++++Several months later+++++

Hey guys I finally got my heavy weapons squad painted!

It took me so long because I undercoated, shaded and highlighted each grain of sand on their bases individually. I thought it would be a pioneering technique but it turns out it looks almost exactly like I had just used the usual drybrushing method. Live and learn I suppose!

I enjoyed modelling these guys more than I did painting them. Each one can be like a little mini diorama, a snapshot of action frozen in time and a rare opportunity to show two of your troopers interacting with each other .For some reason painting felt more of a slog, maybe it's because of all the awkward angles you have to squeeze your brush into.

First we have the shouty guy. I imagine he's giving the gunner tips on which bit to aim at or relaying orders.

Next we have the moral support/ good job buddy guy. I had a go with a bit of green stuff modelling on the hand and I think it worked quite well. I chickened out painting the stripe on the covered shoulder though, screw that noise!

A view from the back. It's a clipped down and repositioned pointing hand. I'm determined to limit the number of pointing hands going "They're over there!" in my army.

Next is Pilfered Parts Paul. I knicked his crouching legs for a sniper. I don't plan to use the sniper now but that's a story for later. I like the way Paul is just letting his buddy get on with it. Hopefully no one will be confused by the lasgun, it's just for the look of the thing.

Thanks for reading, hopefully I can get the army finished this time! I feel a lot more excited about the plans I have for some more toys and a friend who's just getting back into the hobby too so I have a better chance this time around.

Looking back at those photos I realise I need to redo the edge highlights on the black armour a lighter shade of grey. I thought I'd use a vallejo paint I got for the basecoat of the fatigues called black grey. It looks a bit lighter when you first put it on but as it dries it lives up to its name and there's very little difference after 24 hours between the black and the highlights, certainly not enough contrast to be seen at tabletop ranges.

I think getting the contrast right is the painting technique I'm really going to have to work on. I find it hard sometimes when painting to realise that the miniatures are going to be viewed from further than arms length most of the time and what I think looks messy up close make more sense to the eyes from further away. I'm going to go back and sort the highlights out. I haven't added a highlight to the skin, metal or fatigues too so that needs doing.

Here's a couple of work in progress shots of some of my stormies. I tried drybrushing these guys like I said I was going to do with my heavy weapons teams. It's not ideal as it takes longer, especially after redoing the black on the armour and again you don't get enough contrast. Lesson learned!

I tried to get a gem sort of highlight from the old How to Paint Citadel Miniatures book on the go with the targeting lense but I don't think the transition is smooth enough so you don't get the effect, plus the gloss varnish kind of destroys the effect instead of helping it. I also need to sort out the visor with a lighter green on the bottom.

I'm having real trouble with the power sword on this guy. I want it to look like it's glowing red hot but it's not going so well. Any tips for me on this?

Thanks for reading guys and let me know what you think.
Jim.

Nice looking army, couple of suggestions: 1) the leman russ looked too bare, it doesn't even have the handle bars for the turret hatch, adding some accessories will help. 2) some of the metal components need additional wash, then highlight the tip area, especially on the HWT tripod and the knife on the sandbag.

Nice job on the mold lines, and drilling of barrel holes, those little things really make it professional looking.

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement guys!

@ Big Mac I can't believe I missed something so simple off my tank haha. I think at the time I thought it was part of some kind of optional ladder that you could have going up the side of it and I didn't even think of how the driver is supposed to get in when the hatch is closed. I'll have to rectify this and add some stowage to make it more interesting.

Hey gang I've got a sort of lack-of-progress update for you.

A couple of weeks ago me and my friend got the Dark Vengeance box set. I really liked the look of some of the new chaos models, in particular the forgefiend/maulerfiend, so I took the plunge. I've got the set assembled so me and my friend can game but I'd like to start painting these guys up too soon so I'm going to split my attention between the two forces for a while. I'll still mostly be doing imperial guard because they're my favourite so I'll probably be doing two imperial guard units to each chaos unit.

The hellbrute that comes with the set looks pretty cool but I think I'd find it hard to get any use out of the short range multi-melta on a walking chassis and my friend's been blowing my cultists up quite proficiently with the plasma cannon so I thought I'd opt for one of those (nobody tell him the chosen are the real threat eh ). Here's a work-in-progress of my first proper conversion with greenstuff and everything!

Step 1: I've sawed off the barrel of the mutlimelta and the fleshy bits all the way back to the armour plating. I used a knife to enlarge the holes so that the rim was the same thickness of the armour plate (I didn't take a picture of that though )

Step B: I used the plasma cannon from the sentinel kit. It's slightly larger than the ones from the russ sponson and as my sentinel is a scout he won't mind if I use it. I trimmed it down thus. The aim is for the top part to go slightly inside the arm under the armour plate so it isn't just stuck on the end.

Step III: Stick it in, glue with normal polystyrene cement. I'm pleased with how it turned out, like he's holding a jumbo sized plasma pistol. You can see in this pic that I chopped off the tentacle things popping out of his side and trimmed the chain off his arm. I thought they made him a bit too cluttered.

Step the fourth: Ruin the model with inexpertly applied greenstuff!

I've tried to blend the flesh that was there out on to the weapon. Once it's painted it should be ok.

Thanks for reading and please let me know what you think.

Grr I've hit a bit of a snag at the moment. I was painting the second of my infantry squads and I've only gone and used the wrong grey for the fatigues! I used Vellejo Black grey as a base and then London Grey over that but I must have used codex grey last time as this latest batch is noticeably dark and slightly bluer. I'm going to have to go back and go over it again.

I really want to get what I have done now though because I'm itching to buy more stuff! I have a rough idea of what I want up to 1500 points but I'm not sure if I should get it now or wait until the new codex drops. I was thinking of changing my veterans to have 3 meltaguns instead of sniper rifles and having a special weapons suicide squad with flamers but I've heard rumours that they wont be valid options in about a months time.

Heya gang I haven't given up! Me and my friend have been battling about once a week and have been in something of an arms race. I've been feverishly assembling everything I have and I've added a few tanks and changed the composition of some of my squads so I could do battle without having to ally my chaos in and diluting my Imperial Guard with the dark vengeance guys as they weren't very cost effective with what I've got and made a poor showing of it last time around.

I managed to get to exactly 1500pts last time and ended up winning. We've just been playing the rules without any objectives other than "table your opponent" at the moment and I could just stand back and blow my friend's army away. I didn't even move most of my infantry and my battlecannon russ just stood taking pot shots as the terrain was very open. I had some outflanking and some fast units to make it more interesting and some deep-striking terminators mauled some of my infantry but it was a bit unfair to my friend I thought. I'm really looking forward to getting some proper games with LOS blocking terrain and objectives in soon though.

Here are some work in progress pictures of the current state of my army.

Here's a pretty bad shot of the whole thing. If you zoom in on the gallery you can just about make out what everything is, sorry about that
From left to right there's a chimera with melta vets, a devil dog, Leman russ battle tank, Leman Russ executioner, vendetta gunship, platoon command squad, company command squad, 2 infantry squads, autocannon heavy weapons squad, flamer special weapons squad, Scorpio the scout sentinel and finally some Kasrkin.
The devil dog will hopefully be used as a hellhound with a flamer suicide squad in a chimera supporting in the future. Need more anti-tank stuff first though, I have very weak defence against land raiders without it! The infantry is dangerously vulnerable in battle at the moment so I'm going to figure something out and swap some stuff around in the coming months.

I've added a bit of battle damage to the front of the russ and used some bits from the vehicle accessory sprue to try and add a bit of visual interest, it even has a handle on the turret now hurray! I bought some Typhus corrosion and rust stuff so I'm going to look at some tutorials and grunge things up a bit more to try and get some realism in there.

The crew of this russ have heard about traitors "sowing the seeds of chaos" so they've stuck a spade on the turret to dig up any heretical flowerbeds they may find.
I hadn't realised that a search light and smoke launcher were included in the basic cost before so I used the ones from the vehicle sprue. They're a bit big for my liking but hey-ho.

These are my veterans. As you can see I was originally planning on a cadian army but I changed my mind since. I'm still wavering on carapace armour on these guys, might make them more useful in objective games. I tried to put a bit more effort into making these but some of the poses came out a bit goofy.
I'm torn if I should slap these guys in the vendetta or chimera them to support the devildog as they can shoot out of the top hatch.

Flamer suicide squad with respirators. Don't want them getting bronchitis from the nasty prometheum fumes before being shot to bits!
These guys will either be in a chimera charging up next to a hellhound or jumping out of a vendetta. They'll probably die every game before they do anything but the image of all those flames is irresistible to my inner pyro.

My nearly finished Vendetta. I've put one of the spare lascannons I had from the heavy weapons team set on each side of the nose by filing the sensor banks that went there flat and gluing them on. My friend had some space marine lascannons lying around that were perfect for under the wings. I need to give this a bit of proper wear and tear but I'm not quite sure how yet.
It underperformed in its first game but I didn't make use of the grav chute ability.

The latest addition to my army! I had a lot of points to make up for a 1500pts game so I just maxed this beast out. It murdered about half of my friends space marines army before he realised how much of a threat it was. He's pretty new to the game so I don't think he'll make the same mistake twice! When I have a few more bits I'd like to take it with a demolisher cannon as I think it could add an area denial effect and give the rest of my army a boost.

I had 10 points left so I magnetized a hunter-killer missile to Scorpio. He outflanked and got a cracking shot on the rear of a vindicator and caused it to explode!

That's what I've been up to anyway. Thanks for reading and please let me know what you think.

Hi there gang I've been proxying my veterans with carapace armour for a while now as I wasn't sure how much of a difference it would make game-to-game. Now it only costs half as many points I figured it's got to be worth it so I've committed myself to converting them up with a bit of greenstuff wizardry.

I've never done anything with greenstuff on this scale before both in terms of the small size and how much work there actually was to do. It took ages and the results are a little rough for my liking but I think it'll look good when it's all painted. I may try filing some of it a bit smoother yet.

I tried to emulate the armour of the Kasrkin stormtrooper models with the extra armour plates and I extended the armour on the abdomen down a bit. It looks crazy rough here but when you think the model is only about one tenth of the size of the image it shouldn't be that bad and hopefully it's up to table-top standard.

I filled in the cloth parts of the armour to increase its coverage and make it look a bit studier. I'm going to paint the obvious fingernail marks and dents to look like wear and tear on the armour plate. I like the idea that even though the veterans have similar armour to that of the kasrkin it isn't made to the same standard and they aren't well supplied enough to keep them as well maintained.

I quite enjoyed myself and I gained a lot of confidence in mixing the putty up and working with it. I'm going to try adding a few details like those little monitors the new scions have on some of the models and a few greebles here and there. Mustn't forget to stick the grenades on either!

I picked up some of the Vallejo black primer to use with my airbrush. It has some pretty rave reviews so I'll have a go of that and let you know how it turns out. It should be good to have the control of the airbrush and not have to worry about the pressure in the can and all the overspray going to waste.

After these guys I'm going to try to make my commander look a bit more heroic. He's more of a strategist than a warrior so I've been struggling with making him look imposing without actually having any obvious weaponry on show. I think a billowing cloak might do the trick so I'm going to try out the tutorial here: http://www.steamforged.com/sculpting-101-cloaks-banners-and-pelts/ and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for reading guys and please please let me know what you think.

+++++Over a year later+++++

Hello everyone mind the cobwebs! I haven't been around for ages but I've been a bit ill recently so instead of enjoying the glorious sunshine we're having here in the UK I've been hiding away, recovering with a bit of relaxing painting. Thought I'd finally get my commander done. Good light for it if nothing else!

Nothing too special, just a tank commander arm and one of the heads from the Bitz pack you get from GW added to the usual command squad sprue.
I did have a go at making a cloak for my commander like I mentioned all that time ago. Even though the link I posted was dead when I tried to look at it again I remembered a few pointers from it and I'm quite pleased with how it's turned out. I think it gives him an air of nobility and he looks like a proper leader now.
I think I'm starting to get the hang of painting for the table now. I'm painting a little more relaxed and it feels much better. Highlights to master next!

I've been wrestling with the colours a little bit recently as my old Citadel paints have started to run out or go off now. I've used Vallejo Cold Grey in place of Codex Grey and it seems a pretty good likeness. Scorched Brown, Bestial Brown and Snakebite Leather aren't in production any more which I used for the base so I've used Armor Brown (great because it can be sprayed on with an airbrush after the black has gone on and tidied later) and Flat brown instead. If the difference is really noticeable en-masse I can paint the rims of the old models to match and it probably won't be too bad.

I gave him a sort of brassy gold finish to his bionics as befits his esteemed rank.

I think it's a pretty passable attempt at a cloak there. Could probably do with stronger shading though to emphasise the folds.

I've really enjoyed painting this guy up and I think I'll start painting a lot more of an evening now. I'm off house-sitting until friday next week so I won't have anything finished for a bit but I've got some regimental advisers to do when I get back and I'm looking forward to those characterful models.

Thanks for taking a look and please let me know what you think!

Thank you for the kind words Insaniak I appreciate it

Next on the painting table are some regimental advisors. I thought I had more to do on these guys but they're almost done really. I've been painting the astropath today and I really like the model. It's like a cross between a wizard and a monk which I suppose they kind of are really. They have psychic abilities which allow them to see the emperors divine light as a beacon in the swirling darkness of the warp, don't get much more holy than that.

I want to add some more detail like gems and maybe colour the officer of the fleets sleeve cuffs differently as I think they're all a little bit boring and plain at the mo.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to add some visual interest!

I like the idea of the commissar and the master of ordnance wearing a similar uniform to their comrades as they have their boots in the mud and get stuck in with the rest of the common soldiery while the astropath and officer of the fleet stand apart and aloof. I'll put some better pictures up when they're done.

I put the paining of my astropath on hold for ages because I painted the robes Dark Angels Green and got a bit stuck there for some reason. I did the same with an archer character I got for a D&D campaign that never got played.
This time around I made myself a little painting chart to help me choose which green to use for the next layer and I've finally got over my fear of painting green things! It probably didn't help that at the time all I had at the time was DA Green and Scorpion Green!
I've started to make charts of all the colours I've amassed over the years and it's been really helpful for colour choice and choosing which colours to mix too. Really recommend it if you don't do it already.

It was painted Dark Angels Green already so I just layered over with Lufftwaffe Cam. Green and then a mix of same with some flat green added.

I've got so much stuff still to paint but I'm itching to buy more stuff. I'd like either a second hellhound/devil dog or maybe try one of those Wyvern things, they seem pretty good. Must stay strong!

Thank you for reading my ramblings and let me know what you think.
Cheers, Jim

++++Update 12/7/15+++++
Hey there everyone hope everything's good with you.
I've had a good painting session today and got the advisors painted up to a slightly higher standard. I'm still not one hundred percent happy with them yet and I need to do some highlights to really make them pop, which is something I still haven't got the hang of yet.

I also started doing the fatigues on my carapace armoured veterans squad.
At the moment my technique is to paint them Vellejo Cold Grey, give it a black wash and layer Cold Grey again. I thought I could speed things up a bit by painting a darker grey first so I don't have to wash them but the grey I used (I think it was London Grey) wasn't dark enough to give a decent contrast so I ended up having to wash them anyway.
I'm going to try again on the next squad. One of the good things about guard is that there's always more of them to practice and improve your painting with!

I've a day off work tomorrow so I'll have time to do some more painting after studying so I should have some pictures up later on.

Thanks for reading, Jim.

So I've had a really chilled out day today doing lots of painting and a bit of converting too.
I finally got my advisers up to what I think is a decent table-top standard. I think the officer of the fleet and master of ordnance will see the most use in game for their rules but I'll use the astropath for a bit of fun sometimes too.

I like how expressive these guys are. The master of ordnance looks gruff and serious and a bit stressed out whereas the officer of the fleet is so imperious and haughty. Nice work GW!

I've added a bit more bling to the commissar and a little pizzaz to the astropath, they don't look quite so drab now. This is my favourite commissar model because it looks like he is casually shooting someone in the back for cowardice instead of being posed to shoot at the enemy.

I also got some paint on a conversion of one of my kasrkin. I filed down the grenade launcher and added a few greebles and a wire cable to the backpack. The barrel of the gun is a reversed flamer head. At the time I didn't know what a hot shot volley gun even looked like but it turns out my idea's pretty close. I'm trying to get hold of some plasma gun kasrkin to replace the flamer/volley gun because these guys seriously need a bit of a buff. For the points cost they need to make a lot more of an impact in the game!

Last but not least I have decided to use the models from my planned suicidal attack special weapons flamer squad (Which I've already started painting) to make a suicidal attack platoon command squad instead.

This way I can get an extra heavy flamer in there and save 20 points that I would've had to use to buy the special weapons crew. These guys will be jumping out of the Vendetta and into a whole lot of trouble, I've started thinking of them as the helljumpers.
This does mean I'm lighter on the number of orders I can give out but on the other hand I am heavier on suicidal flamer maniacs, so it's a net gain I feel.
I used the tank commander head from that comes with the hellhound as I've run out of those little respirator thingies now.

I've completely failed in this and bought some fortifications and daemons off my friend for cheap and got a heavy weapons squad for more autocannons, but I'm not going to assemble them yet!

I had a massive airbrushing session a while ago and everything is at least undercoated now. I really recommend that vallejo primer airbrush stuff. The white tends to dry and clog the nozzle after a while but I think it's worth cleaning it and carrying on, its so much easier and more precise than a spray can.

+++++Update 14/03/2018+++++

I'm back!

A friend of a friend of mine invited me to join an escalation league at a local gaming club recently. I've never really been into the social side of the hobby being a bit of a loner but I thought it's about time I challenged myself on that score and actually grow as a person.

I had a small game with my guard and it's really rekindled my interest in painting and the hobby as a whole.
I've since joined the club as a full member and I'm going to try and get at least one game a month. I've been painting like mad recently and got loads of my army done. I also started to update some of the details on my older models, adding on little bits like gold trims on my commanders and doing a slightly changed vehicle scheme which I though was a bit more interesting.

I'm going to dig out my proper camera soon and get some better pictures of these guys and show you my updated models but here are some quick phone pics of what I've been up to this year so far.

I got some GW vouchers for Christmas 2017 so I thought I'd expand my guard army with some more troops, another russ and a wyvern.

I actually painted it all before buying a new thing! That's a new record for me!

I thought I could use this guy as a lord commissar warlord with voice of command alongside a regular commander. I don't think he's the optimal choice but I really like the model and enjoyed painting it so he'll definitely see a few games at least.

My tank commander. I'm going to try and make a punisher cannon that fits over the stub of the battle cannon as that seems like a powerful combo. Still need to do the transfers on this guy.

I really like how this heavy weapons guy came out: "It was my turn to fire the missle launcher "

Thanks for reading, Jim.

Welcome back after so long. I lile the camo stripes on the tanks. It flushes them out more. The models looks like they would be good to play against.

Punisher commanders are acceptable. But really that 3+ to hit is never bad on anything if you make your stratagey around it. I am a fan of the plasma or demolisher commander. Not exactly optimal though.
