Hey guys,
Now, if you ever pay any attention to me, you know I like to think outside the box. Yeah, I'm not a wonderful painter, or a modeler, or a player. But I do have a rockin' imagination.
Awhile ago, as a kid, I was curious what happened if I mixed oil based paint with acrylic paint. Just to see what it would look like, ya know? I knew they'd separate, but what would it look like? So I combined the 2 in a little bottle, shook the living (*#* out of it, and splashed it on some cardboard. Alright, file that for future reference....
BAM! I want Ymgarl Genestealers. How do I make them different? I'll modify them! That's not enough....
The materials!
1 acrylic color you like
1 oil color you like
DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer (optional)
brush you don't value
Turpenoid (or other material used in the cleaning of Oil based paints)
Empty bottle with lid
Alright. So in order to get the color I wanted, I mixed it. I added a little Multi Purpose Sealer for added strength:
Ok, now I have the 1 color I like for my acrylic paint. And my other color is Orange!
Mix the Oil and the acrylic in a bottle. I used no measurement what-so-ever. Just eye it up. I chose less oil based to acrylic because I wanted my splotches to be more subtle (as subtle as fluorescent paints get lmao). Now... SHAKE! I tossed a pebble in the container as well for a little help. You're right. That little container looks like its all orange. It's because the oil based paint stuck to the sides.
Alright, now you've got your coagulating mess. Excellent. I base coated my ymgarl with plain fluoro teal (from the 1st image), let dry, and I splashed my Oooy- gooy teal/orange on it, followed by a happy helping of Les' wash "Soft Body Black" (Yes, I wanted it messy. For the whole "I was hiding, now you die" aspect). Remember that Turpenoid? Use that to clean the brush you don't value that much.
Comparison photo!
No details done yet. Just base colors and black wash. No bells or whistles, ya know?
Here's a side view of the Ymgarl, so that you can better see the effect that I'm aiming to teach you:
This is EXACTLY what I was aiming for. Not too shabby. And, of course, I used fluorescent colors for a reason.
Here's the original Genestealer (no details):
He's so green....
And here's the Ymgarl (no details):
Look at that orange POP! I'm a fan.
Well, I hope you like this as much as I do. I can see this having applications in Chaos as well as this current use with nids. Maybe mix a plain color acrylic with fluorescent oil? Or both plain colors. Hell, they're your miniatures, do whatever floats your boat!
Thanks.
