Heya,
for Chaos chosen, from Dark Vengeance:

My method is surely primitive and crude and I would like to ask others how they would do ancient gold trim or how should I round out mine?

So far, I have done this:

*Tin bitz basecoat.
*Shining Gold layer/drybrush attempt (with detail brush).
*Ogryn flesh wash.

I know the result is mediocre at best compared to what's out there and I want to try for a much better effort. Any suggestions?

Thnx in advance.

Try the vallejo "liquid gold" range, they have a nice range of golds, and one you will find invaluable is "old gold".

Bare in mind tho, they are an alcohol based acrylic, a bit like tamiya, so you need an alcohol solvent to clean up, NOT water.

Add a smidge of green ink & maybe use a darker brown than Ogryn Flesh.
Use brass first then gold.
After washing (& it's dry) do a light dry-bruh of gold over the top.
I think I get good results without having to use the Vallejo colours but then I haven't tried them so don't what the difference in result might be.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I use a really simple technique for a gold that I really, really like.

Bestial Brown. Then I use gold craft paint I got for a buck at Wal-Mart and drybrush it over the brown. It's cheap and it's really effective.

The thing I love most about it is that it really cuts down on the metallic glitter. If you look at it in real life, you can tell it's metallic, but it has a much smoother luster, more like real metal. Unfortunately, without the glittery look, it doesn't photograph as well as I'd like. Nevertheless, almost all of my finished Salamanders in my gallery have this effect on them, so you can take a look if that interests you.

In any event, good luck and I hope that helps.

I checked out the Vallejo Gold on Google. I think it is brilliant, but will have to find a local supplier.

I redid two test pieces with darker (Devlan Mud) wash and this is the result. I am now thinking on the Green tinge that was suggested in the replies above.

These have not been re-drybrushed yet after the darker wash. I'm thinking of adding a sepia wash again at the very end, over the gold, to dull any and all shine from highlighting. This sepia trick has worked very well in the past on making Iron Warriors look ancient, but they are silver, not gold.

Any suggestions? I know there are very many flaws all over each each model but that's okay for now- it's the painting steps I need to Codify for now and the rest will happen.

If you are looking for a darker, more sinister gold, try P3 Blighted Gold. It is a nice greenish-gold that fares well with an ancient, chaos scheme.

It matters, what type of gold you want. I used a Vallejo Liquid Bronze. On my Chosen as seen here.
