An Indonesian woman drowned her nine-year-old son in the bath, claiming she was worried that his "small penis" would affect his prospects for the future, a police spokesman said Thursday.

The 38-year-old woman from the capital Jakarta told police her son had had a small penis prior to being circumcised, but that it appeared to shrink further after the operation, police spokesman Rikwanto, who goes by one name, told AFP.

"She told police investigators that she killed him as he would have a bleak future with his small penis," Rikwanto said.

"She drowned her son in a bathtub filled with water. She then dressed him and laid him on a bed. After that, she went to a nearby police office to report her crime."

Rikwanto said the woman was fully conscious of what she had done, but police ordered a psychological test to assess her mental condition.

It's an interesting story. We hear a great deal about female infanticide but very little about males. I wonder if this is a one-off thing, as MGS asserts, involving a uniquely crazy lady or a wider phenomenon that we just haven't heard of/fail to talk about because of all the taboos surrounding it.

Sorry, it's just shocking. As Manchu pointed out, it's a weird issue, is it one off? or is something we don't know about and this is just coming to light because the mother turned herself in. I mean if this is a cultural thing that we in the west don't hear about, it's particularly jarring.

Yeah, our society seems much, much more comfortable talking about female genitalia mutilation and infanticide than the same topics regarding males. So I wouldn't be surprised if this was something going on that just doesn't get talked about. Maybe similar things happen in the States for all we know.

The girl claimed that she was fully conscious. It doesn't mean much, other that she wasn't having some kind of schizophrenic episode.

It's a horrible story, just like any infanticide story. On top of things, what did she expect, her freshly circumsized nine year's old indonesian kid to be hung like Peter North?

I'm going to check my local newspaper for this tomorrow. I also wonder if there are more cases of this, like all the rape news coming from India all of the sudden.

I would presonally doubt it.Most of the world is patriarchal afterall which is what makes female babies less valuable to certain cultures. Infanticide on the grounds of sex is not related to this case, the mother as clearly mental.

I'm sure that ugly children or those with a deformity/disfigurement are occationally murdered but I'm not sure how common that would actually be and it may well be gender neutral.

I do find it interesting that female genital mutilition is such a hot topic yet male genital mutiliation (which this boy underwent) is barely mentioned. Surely genital mutilation is genital mutilation, I know that for women it does have a lot more serious consequences but in principle they are the same.

This is a news story with very little discussion value other than the fact this was a mother who killed her child due to what she thought at the time was the right reasons.

I hope there is very little mercy for her.

If the mental health tests show her to be unstable, then please ignore my upcoming comment.

This is, of course, a tragedy, but it'll be even more of one if she is mentally unstable. If she is mentally stable though, death sentence may be too good for her.

If she is deemed non-responsible for her actions, then she's likely to be interned for quite a while, if not forever. I think I would prefer a life sentence in prison over a life sentence in an asylum.
