So i was wondering if you think the models from the dv tac squad would be suitable to use as sternguard veterans. They seemed to me like itd work because they are all well decorated and adorn so i figured if painted right theyd work. I ask for two reasons, i dnt like workin with finecast and i got a huge earfull from a guy at my local game shop about not using troops i dnt have the models for. Any time i use them even when im not even playing him he has to chime in that any victory i achieve shouldnt count cause im not using the proper figs.

That guy sure sounds like a tool...
If your normal space marine tac squads dont have those white helmets, that should be enough on its own.

It seems like a lot of sternguard conversions feature extended/drum/special magazines for the bolters, but there is no real reason that the special issue ammo has to be in non standard magazines.

Obviously if you're going to use combi weapons you should convert them or it will be confusing for your opponent. But if your models are WYSIWYG and don't look identical to your tactical marines I really can't see anyone being justified in complaining. On the outside, you may point the unit out and say, "hey look these are sternguard".

TLDR? Guy sounds like a tool, looks good to me!

I just run the special ammo, i couldnt believe i was being belittled for not wanting to drop 100 bucks on 10 figs. Im glad someone agrees with me. Maybe i just need to get out of that shop but thats besides the point. I did get some more flack because i didnt file down the da emblem onthe shoulder pad. Is that really that big of a deal?

It may make a fluff-bunny cry a little. And maybe a servo skull/cherub doesn't get its servos/wings. But markings like that have no bearing on the game. DIY chapters are all over the place. Is it a little weird that ultramarines (if thats what those are) have a wing/sword motif? A little. Does that really matter as far as playing the game goes? Not even a little.

TBH you have a painted unit with a painted vehicle (heck you even did the harnesses), it seems like that alone is better than half of what you see in most game stores. Sprue grey, primer black, this box is a land raider. I feel for you, it seems like you've got some very picky gamers to deal with.

Tell him to whine less and worry about his own army more.

Those are fine for Sternguard. A Veteran in a Space Marine Chapter is a tactical marine with a white helmet/white rims. If you aren't good at conversions/etc, those work just dandy.

Heck, I'm going to have to spend a ton of money on my Sternguard Veterans w/ Combi weapons, because I'm garbage at converting weapons.

Yeah my army is pure smurf, as if i didnt catch enough crap for that. I just like being the good guys i guess. I just figured it was their squads special marking or somethjng. I dunno the same thing goes with the dv termis i painted up. I just wanted to reach out and see what the general thought on it was because at my shop i catch alot of crap for it.

There's been a few of these types of posts on the forums lately. Personally I don't see anything wrong with your miniatures, they look really good and are a good representation of sternguard.
As for the guy who has been harassing you, that's what his behaviour amounts to in my books, I wouldn't put up with it. Moreover, why are other people in your gaming store letting someone belittle you like that? Why are the owners of the shop letting someone act like that?

Im good friends with ine of the owners we play dnd together but this dude is pretty much the club organizer, judges the paint comps , and pretty much started the club. Plus i just started not that long ago and i guess ultra marines are not the most popular so i dont carry much clout in the club.

Nothing wrong with the smurfs mate, in all honesty I thought they were sternguard models missing a few of the details (the poses of the DV marines are pretty good at doing that to me I think).
Keep your head up and just keep going, its your hobby and your army and you've done everything right such as the white helmets and trimmings to denote them as sternguard so there shouldnt be anything to be upset about. I created some sternguard out of some bits and pieces left over from a tac squad and that worked out fine for me I found.

I don't get to play a lot so I can say from a laymans eyes the most important things arw wysiwyg and color. So If your kits is correct and your army is painted decently (which yours appears to be) then I can easily tell what is being represented and we can have a better game. That squad would certainly pass, more bits for embellishment or not I can tell what it is.
I'd probably do the same thing except I'd convert more because I like to and have the bits for it.

Ask him to show you that page in the rulebook.

It is not your responsibility to appease his own personal sensibilities about the game. Or listen to his made up rules. I think that If he wants to dictate what models you use, then he aught to pay for them too. I would tell him that you are not going to indulge him in his weird model snobbery, and to mind his own business.

Also those look awesome! If it was me, I might stick a little plastic or gs Omega on top of the sword in the DA emblem. But that would only be to appease my own fussiness. I wouldn't have a problem with anyone else using them like that. You've done a smashing job on the painting

Sounds like the guy is just a run of the mill hater. If they have white helments they're obviously sternguard and easy to tell apart from other marines.

My personally I have a squad of regular marines that I put catachan bandanna heads on to use as a sternguard squad whenever I take a second one. I say "the guys with the red bandanas on their heads are sternguard". I've never had a single complaint about it in the 2 years or so I've been using them. Good on you for being economical in my book!

Now that I see how good they can come out, I might paint up my extra DV tactical squad to be sternguard as well, lol.

Dude, that is a fantastic use of the DV marines. If you'd shown me those in isolation I would have definitely have said they were Sternguard.

I made some Sternguard by cutting off the magazine from a Terminator Storm Bolter and gluing onto a Battle For Macragge Tactical Marine to represent the special issue ammo.

On the one hand, scopes would be nice.

But on the other hands*, unless you have another all-vet squad in your army, they pretty clearly are veterans (white helmets and pauldrons) and as such are distinct enough for anyone who isn't a colossal prick. As a personal matter I would make the weapons stand out more, but that's just style, and for a bring-and-battle friendly game that's not really a factor.

Especially since you yourself don't sound like a prick and are (I'm sure) forthcoming about what they are.

*: Let's pretend I'm a Genestealer and I have 4 of them along with my two feet, to show the division of my feelings on this issue: 5 for you, 1 somewhat against, ok?

i have seen alot of this juvinal behavor over the years i have been in this hobby but the same genral rule that has always applied dose so now, if he is treating you with disrespcet or belittling you in any fashion you need to stand up and tell him(you dont ned to be a dick about it) that he needs to stop harrasing you and that you're here to play and he needs to back off, and i would also suggest mentioning it to the owner cause this little hobby of our the LFGS's live and die becuase of people being unhappy, and any store owner with any amount of sense will step in, you cant possably hope to thrive if ur players are acting like that. now that being said please keep in mind, that taunting and quips and genral harrasment is also part of the "family atmospheare" and is part of a bunch of grown ass men(and wemon) getting togther to play models so there is a level of acceptable greif you should expect. but this just means that you can also dish it back to you're taunter.

so there you go, if you feel its gone to far in the things this guys says/do(and TBH if you are here asking us about WYSIWYG because you have standered bolters and not the GW expensive Stern Guard, then maybe it has) then you need to say something and stop it.

but if its just freandly taunting as is the common in this atmosphear then take it with a grain of salt and throw the quips back at him

also, ur models look fine and like stern guard(as long as you mention that before the game) and i am usally lucky to play some one with 50% of there army painted.

This is a great idea! I was looking at ways to cheaply expand my Dark Angels army, I wanted to know how I could convert a tactical squad to be different, I'll have to change the sergeant to look different than my original one but I'm so stealing this idea!

The dude you play against sounds like a total asshat, those troops look different than normal Ultramarines, so I don't get where the problem lies

No reason why this shouldn't work. Maybe sometimes the veterans don't have time to dress up for combat and they just need to get the job done. And as long as you have reasonably designated them as such, what's the problem?
