Zattikka, the digital games entertainment group, is pleased to announce it has signed a license agreement with Games Workshop®, the UK quoted specialist of fantasy tabletop miniatures, games and novels, to develop tactical, 3D isometric, free to play games based on the gigantic city leveling Titans from their world renowned Warhammer® 40,000® universe.

Warhammer 40,000 is one of the most recognisable ‘science-fantasy world’ genres and forms the basis of a number of Games Workshop’s tabletop, role-play, board, card and gaming products. Today’s announcement will see Zattikka develop a game incorporating single, multi-player and social gaming modes, delivering both single and chain mission tactical experiences across a broad platform range, including PC/Mac and tablets.

The game will be developed in the Company’s US game studios, and is expected to launch next year. Zattikka will also develop additional downloadable content, designed to prolong the gaming experience well after its initial launch.

The Warhammer 40,000 franchise was originally launched in 1987 and now boasts a huge range of products including world leading wargames, New York Times bestselling novels, and multi million unit selling video games, as well as multiple card, board and roleplaying games.

Mark Opzoomer, CEO of Zattikka commented:

"We are delighted to be working with Games Workshop on such a prestigious and important gaming franchise. Warhammer 40,000 is one of the most globally recognisable science fantasy genres, appealing to a broad cross section of gamers.”

Jon Gillard, Head of Licensing of Games Workshop commented:

"Titans have been around since the early days of Warhammer 40,000 when they first appeared in our ‘Adeptus Titanicus’ game, and have been a firm fan favourite ever since. Seeing these massive engines of destruction fight it out in an online game is going to be fantastic.”

Ugh, mixed bag about this. I love titans, but not sold on how this sounds like its coming across. As devolution said, Free to play, pay to win...

Want that gatling blaster? That's £5. Vortex missile princeps? £10. Deathstrike cannon? £15 to you. Carapace multi-lasers - a bargin at 99p. And so on...

Anyone else think this smells of desperation on GWs part?

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Nope, "smells" like they have realised that the "free to play, pay to win" market makes a lot of money and have decided they want a slice - hardly desperation.

Also I doubt that weapons will be £10/£15, normally "free to play" sell stuff for a couple of quid.

Whilst personally I stay away from free to play games, because I've yet to see one that is worth the time, there is no denying that they are currently big business and I don't see it as "desperation" by GW to want a slice of the pie.

Not really. Just another run of the mill business venture. What gets me is why they've not had games featuring Titans before. Though it could be argued, you can't buy Titans in shops. At least, not any more

I exaggerated a little, though that's probably how much it would cost to pilot an Imperator or a Warmonger perhaps...

Possibly, and I didn't mean to jump down your throat. I just think that we should give GW the chance to mess it up BEFORE we start saying that they have made a mess of it - some people tend to get the cart before the horse on this forum when it comes to things by GW.

Ouch. You didn't but now you have. There's was no criticism of GW in my post. There was a swipe at the pay to play game industry however...

Sounds like they are trying to turn all their specialist games into video games. Bloodbowl, Space Hulk, heroquest and now Epic 40k?

Seems like a reasonable thing. Video game companies re-release old software in 'best of' packages to keep it from becoming garbageware. Maybe GW is doing this to keep those properties going.

Sounds good to me. The trick is will they rival SQUARE for IPAD game prices

As long as they use the Adeptus Titanicus to Titan Legions era designs, and not the god awful walking trashbin of the Epic 40k style Titans.

Now I feel like playing AT/TL. I have about 75 imperial and chaos Warlords, Reavers, Warhounds, Imperators and a couple Gargant big mobs and about twenty Eldar revenants, phantoms, warlocks, and even an old farseer titan. Time for a big game!

MechWarrior Online. Doing what this should be, better.

Of course, this is probably going to be a Facebook tactics game rather than a sim like MWO (see the isometric comment in the press release), so it's not a horribly good comparison. The upcoming MechWarrior Tactics game will probably be closer.

Yep, it's gonna be a social game about mechs - invite 50 friends for better weapons, invite 100 for better chassis or pay 15$ etc.

Is this the very same GW that does not reduce its prices in order to avoid devalueing their brand? I mean...social games...brand value...
