Hey all,

As I'm just starting out painting, I thought it would be good to try models from different races to practise techniques etc. Have already painted a couple of Chaos warriors, so just tried my hand at a Tyranid! They're a lot of fun to paint. Would be grateful for any feedback and hints which you may have.

Cheers!

Well done for the first guy, but I am not really a fan of the green claws.

Looks pretty good! Hope to see a ton more of them.

The impression I get is that the claws are supposed to be composed of the same stuff as the crystals, yeah? If so, great work! If not, then the crystals on your base look awesome anyway!

Your tyranid is good. Good blending, good color selection, yaddayaddayadda. I think that showing the hive fleet absorbing non-biological materials not only makes sense, but looks great! If that was an intentional artistic decision on your part, rather than merely a misinterpretation on my own, then it's one that is working out well for you.

Hey, thanks everyone, that's much appreciated! I was thinking of creating a hive of ice blue/ as grey tyranids, the green claws being a result of the world they're on being absorbed (got the idea for the colour after seeing the little crystals in the basing kit - well spotted, Jimsolo!). I think I will set up a WIP thread - not just for the army, but also because it might help newbies like myself who are starting out, and want to see someone else learn as they go. This was my first real attempt at dry rushing, so I'm hoping I will improve as I go. What do you think?

Looks great! I the edge highlight on the claws is a little to bright, but it's hard to judge since the picture is so close, it'll probably look better from a distance.

A tip from a fellow tyranid player: if you're like me and don't enjoy painting to much, don't put to much effort into the skin of your gaunts and gants, since the thing most people will see of them is their scales. Having well painted scales will really payof ones the gaunt count reaches 20+.

Very nice, I like the colours and the painting is pretty good - just missed a mold line on the one claw. Mold lines are a pain!

Yeah, I'm still getting to grips with building the models and cleaning them up, etc. I'll get there, but it's quite overwhelming. The worst part is seeing how well some of the people on these boards paint - it's going to take YEARS to get that good

Anyway, I just finished my second model, and I've changed up the colour scheme slightly. I've gone for a slightly lighter blue on the carapace, and I've tried to do some fade/blending on the claws and talons, as well as changing the eyes to Yellow instead of red (gives a good contrast of colour with the red tongue). I'm looking to do a whole throwaway unit, basically, where I get my colour scheme and techniques up to par, and can try out some experimentation. I'd be grateful for some ideas and suggestions to go along with it as I go forward, and I'll post newly-painted models here as I finish them (I'm still painting pretty slowly...).

All advice and suggestions are welcomed!

The model looks good, but not the base.

The dirt part looks fine, although there's some glue showing on the edge...you may want to glue some more dirt on there. The crystals are also a nice touch. It's just those white rocks that throw it off. Do something to them- paint, wash, drybrush, etc.

Yeah, I agree. I think I am going to pull them off their bases and try again. I need to find some good basing ideas from somewhere...

A wash on the white rocks will do wonders.
