Hey all, it's that time again!

For those who don't know, each year for Adepticon I take about a month and do something off the wall and different for the fun of it for Adepticon in Chicago. Here are the past few years (this will be my fifth).











The general idea.



So the first thing to do is figure out how to make the water and the boat. I wanted both to go in the box shown above, but obviously that would take a couple dozen gallons of clear resin. So I made a wooden tray that will sit in the box on cleats, that can be removed and give the illusion of the box being all one piece.





After that, I mocked out the general shape of the boat in foam, and left overhang on the long ends, as I want there to be a bit of lean so that cut will have an angle to it.






Trying out a few different model placements.







Lots of sanding and trying to make it flush. You cant really see it but the last image is me trying to show the curve I sanded into the boat.



Two gallons of clear resin!

Blocks were added to the bottom to give the boat the angle in the water I want. Once again just a bit of glue, some weight, and time.





These are the half finished artillery. The cannons are built into the deck and powered by steam.





These sticks will make up the planks of the boat. This bundle in my hand is about 1/3 at best of what I will need. 50 packs of ten 10" strips.










The shape of the boat is coming together better. I scrapped the big forecastle look.








Some initial images from the team tournament army. This is a lava based Chaos Dwarf/Ogre army. The display is going to be a lava cavern with an overhang of a happy Empire dwelling.

Well thanks! Ive always felt my displays are only about 50% effort (although really big) due to time constraints so I am really trying to do everything I can on this one.

I've subscribed so i don't miss anything! I'm always astounded at the level of work you can produce so quickly, even with an airbrush it never looks 'quickly' painted not to mention the finer details you do, some who paint to such an enormous workload cut corners but i never have seen you scrimp on quality and i always have a read if a thread pops up with the studio name on it :-)

Adding a little booty to the boat.




A gallon of spackling. I have 3 and will probably use all of it, especially on the team tournament display.




Running a bead of caulk along the edge of the added foam to help secure it.







The edge fully filled. This will be sanded smooth later.













Lining up and cutting the foamcore to hold the units when they are finished. The holes will be magnetized and the top of the foamcore flush with the top of the bases.




Filling in this awkward gap.




Cutting up all the boards from plastic strips. Each strip had the edge roughed up and then cut into 4 strips - 3 good whole planks and a dud for edging and odd places.










Testing out placements. The top one is closest to what I chose, but swap the small block on the forecastle for the big halberd block in the middle.







Filler, filler, filler. I think I broke something here.




The ship's shipping palette for shipping on the ship! Needs rivets.



















Team display is coming along. The door is a Ziterdes dock all hacked up.

Beginning the planking process. The entire thing will be layed down with the groups of bases "solid" and will be sawed apart later. A long time ago I did a test to see if I could do them individually and this is the only way to make it work and have them lock together tight when done.








Sea bride standard in progress.I wanted to do my own version of the regimental standard given in the command kit, but much larger and more like a sail.











Filling in the gaps, cavern walls, and adding the top diorama to the team display.

















The canned foam dried faster than expected so I was able to add a lot of other details and then finally do a lot of putty work which took overnight to dry. Starting to come together below, the top is still very rough.

Looking excellent! what 'canned foam' are you using for the rough in of the walls? you then use the spackle to fill in the gaps and give it the texture? I have been trying to figure out how to do larger things like that!

the Banner sail is great too, I like the use of the model and the sculpted serpent tail, I can't wait to see that painted!

Thanks and that is correct. It isnt necessary, one could use pink foam as well, but I had it lying around.











The planking is pretty slow and tedious, but definitely worth it! This beast is almost 3 feet long. The bases are now big solid rectangles, that while separate from the display will have to be sawed apart and kept in order later.

Almost done assembling! Needs a hole for the mizzenmast, some trim, rivets, windows, and other small details.

very cool! did you carve any wood grain into the planks or are you planning on painting it? (sorry if you already answered Q/stated plan, may of missed it)

I carved the edges of every piece (that was rough) but the rest will be painted. I did hand graining on lots of other things (including my truck) so this should be pretty easy.

















Lots of progress on the team display. Putty work all over the place, filling in the gaps, dents and cuts on the sides and those will be sanded smooth later. I added more buildings to the top and the start of some hills with canned foam.

Lots of progress! Tentacles finished and tentatively placed around the boat. The largest one is chopped up to go on the bases of the Birdmen.





Birdmen - count as Pistoliers.



The team display is officially done with building, and paint will start soon!

The wood and brass of the ship is finished. Still needs a few small details then will be sealed away in the fake box.

Well, this is all really, really terrible.

The ship is looking fantastic the wood grain effect you ended up with by starting from plasticard is most impressive along with your freehand skills of course

Lots of progress, but very slow as this resin can only be poured about an inch per day. The weather hasnt been cooperating either.

But three gallons of clear resin later, things are looking good!

Prepping for the resin to be poured. I ended up cutting out the bottom of the box to reach the lower part of the boat. The cracks were all sealed up with caulk.



Some of the barrels and crates were going to be in the water, so the I went ahead and painted all of them at once to ensure they matched.












It works pretty darn well! The resin smells like a 24 hour spray paint party, but it is going in like a dream. I had absolutely no problems with shrinking or peeling of paint. The only thing that was tricky was the weather, as it requires either a really hot day or direct sunlight to cure. It has been 50-60 here, so I can only pour when the sun is out.

I add water effects that go on white and dry clear. The top layers I made thinner so after each one I could add some effects and stipple some white for bubbles.





Testing out the box! Starting to come together a bit more now.

Transition of the team display from basecoat to pouring resin. I wanted to finish the top first so I could pour resin on both at the same time. The pond ended up holding about a half gallon with 2.5 total around the ship.

It isnt done yet. The water effects, depending on the amount you put on in one layer vary from clear to opaque. A 1/8" layer will dry pure white. So to get clear lower half of waves I will have to slowly build up each day.

Your work rivals old school movie modelers-- even exceed them as you are a one-man workshop! Brilliant work.

Brushfire - Thanks. I really like doing cinematic stuff the more and more my displays grow, and I am certainly inspired by old movie effects. I always liked older movies better because I could try and figure out how they did them.
