So the first time I ever laid my eyes on the OOP print Emperors champion was way back in 2000.
He was one of the HQ choices for a black templar force in the Battle report(The Battle for Techuan's Key!).
Needless to say it was one of the coolest models I had ever seen. Anyway, after 13 years I finally got my hands on one and painted it up.

Quick Painting Technique Breakdown
Armor: Chaos black, Highlighted with Enchanted blue, tried to get really thin sharp highlights, really going for that pre armageddon campaign black templars look.
Tabbard, Crown, Cross: Beastial Brown, Bleached bone, and highlighted with Skull white
Armor Studs: Mithril Silver
Pistol Holster: Beastial Brown, Black wash

Let me know what you think of the paint job, thank!

I feel ya man! I loved that model and for the longest time I could not get my hands on him. (But E-Bay fixed that.) So simple but yet his image is very heroic. And I must say I like your take on the black armor.

The highlight is a little hard for my taste. I also don't like how the sword and the armour are the same. Still, it looks good.

The highlight is a bit too strong. Also, there's just too much of it across the model. The hilt of the sword could have been a different color to help break it up, for instance (a dark gold or bronze there would have been fantastic).

Nice work IMHO. Classic model too, although his sword is a bit big.

Excellent painting, but I thing the model is too monotone. Making the sword a different color would really help with this.

That's the very first mini I ever bought, so many feels of nostalgia.Only thing with the painting, the cross on his knee is bone instead of white, best start over.

I purposely left the knee cross bone colored so that it looked more worn.

I know its supposed to be the "black" sword, but if it were me I'd put some lightning or highlights on it. Also, maybe making the laurels green would help (I think you're going for a "part of the armor" look though). The rest of the model is really good though

"That's not a knife, THIS is a knife!" I like him a lot! I personally like blue highlights with black, how ever I like them a bit lighter and not so consistent. Still looks great and love the model!

+1 to this.

I think the blue highlights could work on this model, but the problem is, they are way, way, way to prevalent! Take a shoulderpad for example, maybe only have the blue highlight on the apex of the curve, not running the full length. This would still provide the definition required, but make him less of a blue marine and more black templary. If I recall correctly, those old school Black templars from Armageddon-era were painted like that, very minimal highlighting to not take away from the black.

All that said, I will stress this, your paintjob is well done, but If you're looking for black armour go easier on the highlights, if they are everywhere, they cease to be highlights

I love the "Mine's Bigger than yours" pose. Really loving the black highlighted with blue too. More army pics would be great!

I think he looks superb. The only thing I would say (and this could be the lighting of the picture) is that the edge highlights on the sword are slightly uneven, but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to tell in real life. The eyes are excellent though.
