My thought behind the color scheme is "they know no fear" so why make my space marines dark and brooding? i will go with florescent orange violet and green. I have a few models just airbrushed down just so that way i could play a few games but now it is time to get serious and i am no longer on a shut down project so i have time to paint again. my first hand brushed model was a jump pack chaplain (still waiting on advice in the P&M blog before i finish him up but as things go i figure you guys as a community will keep me in check and to keep going. Well here goes nothing. Next step my tac squads. but i will leave it up to a vote what should be done next? (vindicator, 3 Rhinos, Tac 1, tac 2, tac 3, predator 1, predator 2, pedro kantoor conversion, scout snipers 1, scout Sgt. Telion conversion, stern guard veteran combat squad, command squad, foot slogging chaplain) still piecing together bits for my assault marines, i have them they are just not built and primed ready to paint everything else is.

My thoughts exactly. I went with red and green (check out my avatar). I've also tried black and orange.

the idea so far was green out line on the shoulders, and SGT will have green helms. the chapters secondary color is purple. so that will fill in everywhere else, where as green represents 2nd company on the trim but if elsewhere on the uniform it means sgt or greater.

i have a few tac marines from the dv box set but i just slapped paint on them so they were not grey during my first game, i started january first. and the chaplain has about 18 hours into it and way to many coats because i just could not bring myself to simple green him. that and battle damage chips because i was playing with him while painting him. the woes of getting started and wanting to play/model at the same time.

But with me making the sgt helms green I think I should take out the green trim before I have real progress. I can allways come up with different company colors. Because I really dig the green helms

Today was not much of a day for modeling but i did do a lot of work in support of my new hobby.

I went to the Local Store and sat down looking at the supplier book. By no means am i lacking the paint i need to finish my work but i wanted to expand future horizons and stop using the same colors and mixes. also i kind of like collecting the paint just thinking about all of the opportunities that await. I also bought a hand drill and the right size bit to continue to drill out my barrels. Before this day i was holding the bit in my hand and i had to use a center punch from my electrical tool box to start the hole and even then the walls were sometimes to thing and i cracked open a few barrels.I also ordered my next set of Sternguard Veterans and a few assault marine boxes. (i almost have my 2k point force collected.

Now before i make dinner here a the photos from what little i did today.

the first one is the troops with a light orange Vallejo highlight that will look better once they are washed and fully assembled. (i just want to capture myself in the step by step process.)

next we have the squad assembled and starting the brush painting process looking at it now i really need to invest in proper source lighting. This is the first layer of violet on the shoulder. and yes there are more marines then in a normal Tac squad. four extra marines to be exact as my two squads before hand were missing missile launchers and flamers. i did not have the bits. but with a few lucky trades i am rocking now. And i like the AOBR missile launcher model i am glad i have one in my army now.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And lastly i did some conversion work on my foot slogging chaplain (who will not be a part of my army but at the time of buying him he would have been. And i did some work on Pedro Kantor. Pictures to follow. the chaplain will be a count as Chaplain Cassius.

But for now the dremmel bit is cooling off and the green stuff is drying. i am using liquid green stuff so i may have to go back over it as it tends to shrink. Pics to follow (not today).

7 AM and i just destroyed my spru clippers. Now as i wait for the store to open i will update with this mornings progress.

I bought the Crimson Fists Pedro Kantor model, and i was working on erasing the fists working with liquid green stuff for the first time. I used a Dremmel with a metal bit to shave off all chapter symbols. I then used a sand paper bit to file it down nice and smooth. it is important to use both bits as the metal bit will eat everything if you are not careful or your minis will eat your sand paper bits if you try to use them from the beginning. I then looked through all my bits which is not very extensive collection and found a skull and a gem. the gem was used on the belt buckle but it protruded to much. so i flicked it off and tried to hold it and file at the same time and my carpet ate the bit. maybe i should of cleaned up all the clippings from the floor before using such a tiny piece. after an hour of searching i picked a smaller skull and decided to use it instead.

the items are not glued in place yet and are off center i will use my tweezers instead of bare fingers for final installment. And i need new files and clippers to clean up the green stuff (too small of a work space to use the high powered Dremmel now.)

The question that I have is it protruding to much from the model? should i shave off more from the back of the skulls so that they fit closer to Pedro?
[Thumb - kantor belt.JPG]
Pedros Belt. still needs clean up on the green stuff and a more centered position with the skull.

[Thumb - kantor arm.JPG]
The replacement of the arm Crimson Fist with a Skull. still needs clean up and glued to center.

Looking forward to seeing these guys progress, always enjoyed different color marines.

Glad that GW doesn't look in blogs however as some poor schmuck would get fired if they ever saw how good Pedro would have looked with moar skulls.

I am just upset about the vanilla models having permanent chapter symbols in them. This is a lot of work to eliminate the DV symbols, and a lot of ultramarine symbols. Thank goodness with my foot slogging chaplain he is the one from the Black Templars Chaplain Grimaldus. i will not be erasing the crosses one as they look cool and when i sit down and write out my chapter history and character history i will just say he went on crusade and is authorized so many crosses as campaign awards.

Just a small line of back ground story as stated above with the orange My chapter does not charge but a slow solemn marching pace into battle chanting songs of war and death (much like army cadences but a different tune). They have a chapter master and captains but the hierarchy are the Chaplains as they are very religious (still learning about fluff maybe religious is the wrong term). Devoted to the emperor but the gene seed comes from the Ultramarines I.E the vanilla codex.

I saying i remember from way back in the day in Army basic training. "Ministers of Death, and We're praying for WAR!" maybe that could be the chapter motto.

edit one: spelling and more information.

Some photo updates not of the full squad but of one individual model that will be my test model. Now off to the store to get new clippers and some files. maybe i will prime and base coat my Pedro Kantor Model today. And fix his new skulls.

I also did the first layer of the eyes. (two drops Vallejo Model Color Prussian Blue, one drop water, One drop Liquitex Matte Fluid Medium)
[Thumb - front.JPG]
Did a light layer of Vallejo Model Color Lemon yellow and the GW Auric Armor Gold. I need to learn to watter my metallics down a bit better.

[Thumb - back.JPG]
With the GW Auric Armor Gold it seems to apply better with just dry brushing instead of watering it down. This is quite time consuming but i like how i kept the detail on this skull.

Lanstus- have you tried any of the washes with the orange to see how they will look? I think that's where everyone puts down the orange pot and picks up other colors, because they just can't get the shade done right. Also how will you be highlighting these?

I say keep the bent crozious, if anyone asks then just say he just finished beating an unfortunate heretic senseless with it and even though the energy field was on his righteous indignation was enough to bend the shaft on the heathen. mould lines are for perfectionists....get your color down pat with the first squad nd then bring up your game with the next squad. Your first squad is required to be reprinted at least ten times without stripping it before your happy.

The mould lines comment is not necessary as stated good criticism and constructive not rude is appreciated. Saying just "mold lines" or "thin your paints" is not constructive. Be specific so that i can learn and advance my abilities .I actually just got a file and knife set, so I will be working on it.

The staff was bent when I bought him so I tried to fix it and i broke it off completely . And I plan to simple green him. Eventually but I can't bring myself to do it to him yet as he is my first model. The other idea was to extend it or make my own, as i do not want my chaplains looking like all the others.

theophony - As far as orange washes I can make a good glaze, but It does not look how i like. I do like how a brown ink looks with orange as the shadows look more natural instead of black. It makes it kind of like a dark orange. instead of all black shadows. Is there a specific brand you were thinking? Because Vallejo does not make an orange wash or ink but they get close. They are highlighted but i need a better light source for photography, much like the crozius is washed you just can not tell with the photo. I decided instead of a camera to get a California Air tools compressor for my own line of work and for the hobby. That and the badger krome ate my wallet. Any advice on taking pictures would be appreciated as you can see i am no artist. Now as far as getting the shade done right i think i need to darken up the orange that you see now a bit more and the highlight will pop, because as of now on the color line for Vallejo i am just one step from each pot, it looks good in some lighting and in others you can not tell, even without the camera.

I guess before I get to far I will simple green the first squad tonight. Now that i got my firs set of tools. As when they are grey I think it looks like a proper mold or over lap in the armor but most flash and spru markings are gone. I guess I just got a little excited and failed on my prep work.

Is the chaplain fine cast or metal? Since you said it broke I'm guessing finecast. Being new to the hobby you may not know but you can put bent resin models under hot water for a little while then apply pressure to resend them. Cool them off to set the new position.

Mold lines pop up on even the best artists sometimes. I know what it's like to be excited and want to toss some paint right away, but it always bites me later if I don't do prep work right off the bat. It's always the models I think I've done the best paint job on that a glaring mold line pops up on and ruins it for me.

- The chaplain is fine cast but as i look to where my army is growing i do not think i like his crucix, i think he would look nuts with a chain axe or something of the sorts. but for gaming purposes would that be a viable count as? i do not want to get run off the table by trying to give a chaplain a chain axe.

Here i have Kantor after many hours of painting and some time off simple greening 4 tac squads of their base coat and primer. but they are almost clean and then its off to trimming the mold lines that i missed. The back pack is on a tooth pick waiting to be primed and painted, i am just at a stalling point because i do not have a chapter symbol yet. I do have a motto but no symbol.

Also i went with a brown wash because i am not a fan of pure black shadows, the brown stains it darker and at the same time gives a good grimy look and feel to the bright orange and makes it a bit darker. But if you notice on a few parts to me it looks like it could be misplaced as brush strokes but looking at the model in normal light it looks like Kantor has been through the thick of battle with his men and is dust and dirt covered. Thoughts, opinions? Has anyone ever seen a bottle of dark orange wash?

And as i uploaded the pictures i noticed a few missed spots but the paint pallet is dry so i will touch him up when i work on the other models. And i need a real camera and light box as this blog progresses there is no justice done to the model with this phone.

So i could not sleep and there was nothing prepped for me to work on as i did not plan this, so i busted out my terminators that i placed to the wayside while i worked on everything else. This is my take on thunder hammers with knowledged gained by cattafish and his tutorial on thunder hammers. If you have not watched his video he gives amazing explanations.

GW: Waaagh ! flesh (base)
Vallejo Model Color: Deep Green (second layer)
Vallejo Game Color: Sick green (third layer)
Vallejo Model Color: Green Sky (thinnest bolts)
Vallejo Model Color: Black (outsides of the box)
Vallejo Game Ink: Brown (wash over the gold and under the skulls) Note 2: i tried the black ink again still not a fan of how it shades into gold.

Think this would work with the oranges? As Green will be used in the army to represent merits of honor and SGT. I could be wrong on this but would it not be correct to assume that if they are in the first company as terminators they would wield green? I kind of cant wait to paint the terminators now but i should get some rest and finish cleaning my tac squads.

Don't remember a dark orange wash, best bet is probably going to be one of the brown washes. I like the idea of the contrasting colors, but you may want to limit them to just two disconcordnant colors. I could easily be wrong and the wash might bring them together nicely.

Are you saying slow down with the excess of green and purple? And for the company color trim keep that down to a more congruent color?

Just got out of the field so it's a lazy day and I am doing prep work and research.

Ten fine cast stern guard veterans are primed and drying.

All tac squads are still soaking in simple green. Minor parts are still keeping paint. ( any advice on the trouble parts or what type of small brush I should get? Currently I am using a tooth brush) and slowly shaving off more mould lines that I keep discovering

All tanks are moved to the back burner as I want my squads to be painted partial grey tanks are fine with me.

I have discovered what I want to use as a chapter symbol. Currently I am thinking a chain axe digging into a skull. The idea for this is either learn to create decals or sculpt this with green stuff and cast it multiple times pretty much lick and stick after I get the mold I want. ( thoughts ideas help?)

As for my assault squads I plan on ordering pre heresy jump packs because I really like the look.

And as a final personal touch to my DIY chapter I plan on ordering helmet crests. Officers will get large Greek style crests, NCOs will have large roman style crests ( so will all assault squads). Tac squads will have small roman style crests. And scouts will have none.

No picture updates unless I get around to finishing my stern guard or at least starting on them.

Like the idea of helmet crests, you can also denote veteran sgts from others with stripes in the crest plumes.

As for getting the parts cleaned I gave up on simple green, it's effective, but scrubbing was a chore. I have started to use super clean instead. You must wear gloves, it will tear up your skin, but I find it dissolves more paint per soak. Also I bought a cheap ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, wish I had spent more to get a better one, but this will due for now. Put the figs and super clean in, let it run a few cycles and a quick scrub gets everything.

Looking forward to some progress photos.
