Cool battle report! Aren't Comms Relays untargetable, though? Also, wouldn't the Kroot able to threaten the Great Unclean One even with his high Toughness thanks to their sniper ammo?
Yes, the Kroot could hurt him, but they were all dead! haha, my opponent did a good job of targeting them. I only got a few shots off on him with the Kroot but my opponent's saves were off the charts.
The Comms relay has an artillery profile I believe, although I could be wrong. Have to double check that.
Thanks for the report! What's your opinion on taking marker drones in a drone squad with an HQ and using that as a reliable and difficult to target markerlight unit?
I think the Battlesuit commander is the absolute business! With Drones he is bad ass. For shooting mainly, but with a unit of marker drones, too. He makes them BS5 and they are slippery as hell. Plus, he is reasonably priced. Give him a Drone Controller, and some marker drones and now you have a fast, reliable unit of marker lights to toss around. I think it is a good idea.
Tetras are still the bee's knees for Marker Lights if you use FW (which we do here) but that unit you describe is hot sauce.
I have been going over the dex further today, man, there are SOOOO many little combos you can pull out of this book. Like running Broadsides with Missile Drones, and HY Missile Pods, you can put out a ridonculous amount of shots.
The issue I am having so far though, is the same Tau have always had: dealing with fast assault units. Also, oddly, AV14 vehicles and Terminators. A lot of the good Tau stuff is VOF, and if you do find yourself facing a lot of Battlewagons/Land Raiders/etc. you may be in deep doo doo. The Riptide is actually good at smashing them up in HtH, as is the Haduken Fist Onegar upgrade for the suits, but you need to plan for that.
I think with allies Tau will really kick ass. Until Eldar get redone, a Farseer on Jetbike, 1-2 units of Guardian Jetbikes for mobile scoring, and Firdragons will REALLY shore up Tau weaknesses. Space Marines will combo with them really well, too as they have better troops and provide counter assault.
I am really liking the Tau though, they are not an easy army to play at all, but good fun.
The high yield missile pod with the buily in tracker, allowing you to shoot both the pods and SMD does wonders. I was wiping whole necron squads out with a unit of three of these. I used missile drones in addition and it got expensive but they help add some ap4 and s7. I'm totally sold on that unit now.
Another tactic was interceptor on the riptide which allows you to maybe drop the large blast on passengers of a flyer of you kill it with maybe a quad gun.
Finally, the cadre fire blade was actually pretty nice for marker lights. His BS5 and target lock is great for it.

I think Tetras took a big hit now that Targeting Arrays have been removed and Disruption Pods have been nerfed. Forge World might of course issue their own update to the unit to make it keep its capabilities in the new book, but right now it seems like Pathfinders are actually better.

Crisis suit load outs are going to change I think. I have been taking plasma and a burst cannon with gun drones on one squad to great success. Fusion is going to be fairly important these days too and I'm interested to see what load outs with fusion in them will crop up.

Don't forget all the ridiculous USR that t5he new battle brother tau can give to imperial units. Shadowsun is literally going to be the new village bicycle do do her handing out stealth and shroud, so will the tau commander and his puretide chip.
For me codex tau is really codex allied detachment, which really could make for some cool fluffy lists that play well but also has the capability to wear thin incredibly fast if every opponent I face now has any great hq (for me shadowsun) a mob of sniper kroot a riptide and HYM sides.
I am looking forward to the evolution of the perception of Tau codex in the coming few weeks!
Against enemy flyers, I think the Tau have some very interesting options such as:
Optional Skyfire upgrade on Broadsides and Riptides
Sky-rays
Mass cheap marker-lights (hope for 6s and pew-pew away)
- 4000
- 1500 6th ed codex: 2 wins, 1 loss, 0 draws

Picket lining kroot to maximize your support fire is key. Plus they can be used to block the kinds of charges you faced vs. the fleshhounds. Yakface used the kroot picket line in his first batrep to great effect. Tau look like a really fun army to play now. I almost regret selling mine...almost..LOL.
Thanks for a great battle report. I think you needed more marker lights, esp some with your commander. Bad luck with your broadsides with skyfire they should have been doing more to the hellturkeys.... It is a tough match up for them with high T MC in Daemons and Nid lists, but with snipers should have a chance. Too bad about longstride and hammerhead, I though that unit would be boss, I have not gotten a chance to play a game with one yet... Cheers..

I think Longstrider is good if you play loads of tanks, otherwise, pass.
Glad you liked it!

Yeah, haha, you here the weirdest mix of music at the shop. We have a wide range of tastes so we have all kinds of music running on the stereo. You never know what you're going to hear!
Nice report. I am personally not a fan of random game length for that reason alone. A standard 6 turn game probably see's Tau possibly take it. However, command says battles over.. we must withdraw.
IMO Tau's troops are still too soft for objective based missions. Supporting fire looks great on paper but its that great. If they could do BS 2 overwatch for all of their troops it could actually make a hell of a difference. Until that happens I dont see Tau being that competitive as a stand alone army. Great as allies though.
