I'll explain my rationale on certain unit choices as it's sure to be pointed out ...
* Shadowsun starts with the ten marker drones. I want a nice large unit to keep my warlord alive. I am relying on getting a lot of markerlight hits with the unit. He can at any time join either the suits or a riptide if required. He is useful for his reroll 1s as novas will not kill my riptides as easily.
* The kroot are dual purpose ... they shield the pathfinders and they are a scoring troop with acute senses that can take backfield objectives. Fido helps them from being swept as well.
* Sky Rays have pros and cons. Cascading markerlights on flyers are nice though and the markerlights are networked. They are also very good for alpha strikes. I know their usefullness drops by turn three and they need to get closer and rely on the SMS as their only weapon but by then, hopefully they will have upset my opponents plans.
* Piranhas have lost some utility but I can alpha strike with a heck of a lot of seeker missiles using a combination of sky rays and piranhas. Again, I am aware this is not conventional wisdom but I am putting out a lot of firepower with those piranhas and it takes the heat off other elements of the list.

I have played most of these units over the course of five games with the new codex. I played entirely at 1500 - 1750. I did not overrrun any opponents but I was not massacred by any opponents either. I feel I played against some pretty well designed list ... SW/IG, GK/Tau, Deamons/CSM to name the best three. I took out two DPs easily with my Sky Rays and Riptides, BTW, because my opponent was really not prepared for the damage they can do. It surprised my opponent who next game I'm sure will be more aware of the threat and make the game much tougher.
