I have some guard sitting around from years of collecting and I'm looking to make an army list out of them. I wouldn't like to spend anymore on this army unless I really have to as this would be just something to play around with when I don't wanna field my normal.
Heres what I currently have
HQ - Lord Commissar
Troops - Veteran Squad
Plasma Gun x3
Chimera
Troops - Veteran Squad
Melta Gun x3
Chimera
Troops - Infantry Platoon
Platoon Command Squad
Power Sword
Platoon Standard
Plasma Gun
Melta Gun
Infantry Squad
Flamer
Infantry Squad
Flamer
Infantry Squad
Power Sword
Flamer
Heavy - Leman Russ Main Battle Tank
Lascannon
Heavy - Leman Russ Main Battle Tank
Lascannon
This puts me at around 970 points. If i go with this list where would be best to put those last remaining points? One of t he leman russ is the old model so its stuck the way it is but the second is the newer version and I have it fully magnetized so i can take any of the 4 variants that are included in the box. Alternatively i have a 3rd leman russ and 3 heavy bolter squads as well.

if your looking for a 30 point upgrade then definatly get the medic pack for the platoon command squad. Those extra 5+ saves can really make the squad survive a bit more. If you are looking to mix it up a little then make one or both of the vet squads into storm troopers. as long as you explain to your opponent that that is what they are. other wise a very flexible list which would probally hold out on its own against most armys. well done

A great list except for your PCS.. Which is pointlessly expensive.. I'd very much disagree with madman to make it MORE expensive.. Get rid of the the platoon flag.. Why would you want ur PCS in combat??? Melta and plasma.. In the same squad???
Best off kitting em all with meltas (maybe a vox.. Maybe..) so that they can react to close drop/ jump troops..
Tbh you need at least autocanons in the units.. Make the most of 6th ed snapshot rules dude, it works to guards advantage, I've lost count of the amount of things that laughed at my AC's / LC's snapshoting then cry when it worked...
It looks like ull be charging the blob up so no point in suggesting ADL with Quad.. But definitely need more heavy weapons against mech/ fly lists somehow.. Meltas take too long to get in range.. They need help Automatically Appended Next Post: Ps, never saw the point in power swords for a sarge.. With the nerf PS's took they're not worth the points back in the day never-the-less now.. Best way to use a sarge is to throw them in the meat grinder as cheap challenges to slow down IC's that would monster through the unit..

I was just going off what I had from my collections, good to know what needs to be changed though
so what would you say, put an AC in each infantry squad or would it be better to leave them as their own squad?

No, shizz no.. Hide em in the squad for the love of big E.. It's a case of carrier cost.. Cheap as chips in IS.. Almost prohibitively expensive in HWS.. The only time I'd think about HWS is lascanons.. (Shoot at different targets) and even the. Their are better ways to bring lascanons.. (Ie vandetta)

How much more aren't you willing to spend on new stuff? If these are the models you have and you're not getting any more, then this is probably the best you're going to do. If you've got a bit of a budget, on the other hand...

I could get anything really, its just the matter of not wanting to spend more than I really need on an army Ill only be playing every now and then.

Ah, in that case, your best investment is going to be getting a command squad box so that you can run a CCS with a standard, and some boxes of heavy weapons teams, so that you can get more killing power into those infantry platoons.
That and some vanquisher cannons or some plasticard tubing, so that you can upgrade the now worthless LRBTs into something rather more useful.

Yeah the standard LRBT are now gak and now they suck more without lumbering behemoth
Oh and get rid of the Power Swords, IMO if you giving guard melee weapons your playing them wrong

Good thing I keep all my bits so it'll be easy to replace my heavy bolters with autocannons and using an old baneblade barrel for the vanquisher. Hopefully i can pick up a cheap CCS off of ebay, so i would just then fill the CCS and PCS with either all plasma guns or all melta guns?

Your opinion is wrong. Melee blobs are quite good. Nothing superb, but good. As an ally detachment, they really shine, as a primary force, they can handle a few things.

power blobs are a figment of 5th edition. Great while they lasted, but we're in 6th ed now. Power blobs relied on several things to work, most of which were killed off by 6th edition rules changes.
It's not to say that you can never make them work ever, but they're comically easy to prevent them from doing anything in close combat nowadays.

Sorry, this probably was a good example of language barrier. In our language, you can say that someone has "wrong" opinion
Guarsmen are quite bad at shooting, even with upgraded special weapons. But with power axes, they are good MEQ killer. They ARE ment for using them that way, look at commissars special rules. Its obvious they should be in close combat.
