So I am starting warhammer fantasy and will be purchasing the Islands of Blood starter kit and building a nice sized custom board for games. Since I intend to keep the high elves, the board will primarily be High Elf inspired with probably some caves or chaos portal looking things for skaven or warriors of chaos to begin their invasion. There will also be custom rules for different special areas.

Lets start with Inspiration for the board.

I like Rivendell as a high elf themed city. Will need to watch LOtR a few times

Probably fits well.

So I did an initial sketch of what I'm thinking for the board. It will be a 6' x 4' board. I will be using many of the techniques seen here:

most of the bridges will be terrain bridges. between the two bridges (between the spires) will be water affects and the empty space on the board will be 8" drop offs with some water affects and cliffs. I want to give a very mountainous feel to the scenery while still providing playable space. This is a quick top down concept sketch. Does this look like enough playing room? Most of the bridges will be big enough for 40k tanks to move across single file, but many will be fairly thin.

Any additional thoughts would be helpful.

So I figured it would be good to start by practicing making such a complex board on a smaller board first, so I am building a display board for my 40k Orks. There is no real initial design, just sort of flying by the seat of my pants. There will probably be a watch tower hanging from the side of the mountain.

I used 1/2 foam board for surface areas and some pine tree bark from my back yard for the rock formations. I will be using lightweight dry wall filler to fill the gaps and blend the aesthetic components together.
