This is the first post I've read on this site, and I am thrown back in amazment. Amazing job man, I definently think you should enter this, a little more could be done with the sword though, mainly the hilt/handle/pommel areas.

I think it is looking good. I have one sitting on my desk with the base colors down and I need to finish it up.
Good work.

Holy crap. Good work.
I agree about the hilt/handle bit. Even if you just add some shiny metal to show it being beat up or something would really make it look finished.

Great work! I think you should totally enter it into Games Day! There are a few little touch ups you need to do like on the base for example, but otherwise you did a really smashing job. Good luck!

Great job on the model. I think it would do well.
Could we get more picture of all around the model?
Judges at these events are really looking closly at your model so every little thing counts.
Some think you might want to touch up on. Just being honest and don't want to offend.
Paint the leather band that is around the base of the sword. Looks like it has some of the rust effects on it. Hightlight the base of the sword by the hand a touch like on the sword.
Small extreme highlights to help bring out detail. Not on every little part but scattered around here and there. All the colors. Or add a little more shading.
The base is just not as epic as the figure. Most bases there will have tons of extra little things or tell a story that goes along with the model.
The eyes look great. Don't touch them.
Again great work and I would love to play against it on the table. Best of luck at Games Day.
Just found this on CMON. This will be the kind of competition you will be up against.

Thanks for all the compliments. I really appreciate it. I have considered this model done for a while, mostly unsure how to paint the sword near his hand. The strap and the skulls I am just not sure and I have been scared to paint it without exactly knowing what I am going for. I game with this model frequently, the base is set to the same theme of all my nurgle stuff. I did a simple textured base with pools of rotten blood here and there.
I was thinking of adding more though, based on the shoulder pad and skull. Get a whole MK3 armour set on the ground laid over and busted up and rusted. Like somebody got too close to him and just fell over from the decay itself.

So I will be at demon and I look forward to seeing this and you have some great potential that said don't worry about the base as that's not judged. Concentrate your efforts on the painting. The model is nice but lacks pop so my suggestion have some areas on the high point much lighter. The eyes need work and the sword hilt. Think about golds with verdigris as that will have a nice color effect to what you have. Focus less on the gore and more on showcasing the mini. Add more colors to it other then the green I.e look up pictures of infected wounds. Hopefully you will keep at it and be able to hold a demon of your own one day as trust me its a great experience. Mine stands out on my shelf and I love it.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Well crap. I have really bad news.
I purchased this model 2nd hand on ebay. it was already primed black when I purchased it, but had a slight sticky residue to the model. After much cleaning it still had this residue. I decided to paint over it at the time, thinking the paint would cover this residue. It did, I had no more sticky residue to touch. The pictures shown are of just after it has been painted a while ago.
This is a model I play with somewhat regularly. It is kept in a battlefoam pluck tray in the middle of a large case. Well protected but pretty much always touching this foam on one side or another.
I take this model out of the case to start looking at improving it and I notice some of the paint in some areas is matted down some, like you can see where foam has pressed into the paint.
My attempts to repair this has already failed. I am going to start stripping the model tomorrow.
Still two months until games day, Stripping will take a couple weeks. I might still be able to present at games day. I consider myself a good painter but sometimes models dont turn out like you want, This one did. Will it again,,,,who knows.

Before I start, I want to say that it looked really good before things went pear-shaped. My criticism doesn't detract from that opinion. I know that it's nice to get a lot of positive feedback on models, but personally, if I'm entering a GD with something, I'd rather people be critical, instead of just gushing over how good it looks and glossing over the fact that it could be better.
People have already mentioned the cloth on the hilt of the sword, so I'll not bother with that.
Other areas that needed work are:
The horns - very bland, look a lot like a simple drybrushed bone over a dark base. Next time around trying working in some coloured glazes at various points. Darken them a little near the base where they meet his skull. Perhaps lighten them a little at the points and on the upwards facing parts. I'd think about darkening with purples and browns, and lightening with yellows. The good thing about Nurgle stuff is that you can slap just about any colour on and it won't look horrible. Basically what you're aiming for is a tint of colour in random sections to give them a little more interest, instead of the flat bone effect you have going on now (though you want to retain the impression they're bone, of course).
Face in general - Take the highlights on the face up a little compared to the rest of the body. While the eyes currently help to draw attention to it, by taking the highlights on only the face up some, you'll help make it pop off the rest of the body a little more. You want the face to be a good high contrast area to draw attention to the details and make it the focal point, and a few extra stages of highlights with help there. Again, consider shading select areas with a purplish tint, which will help you tie it into the eyes and horns.
Guts and Globules - Not shiny enough. These thing have just spilled out of the gaping hole in his stomach, they're going to be slick with whatever juices are in there, so you want a gloss finish on them. Not necessarily 100% gloss - having a little flat colour can help with the contrast, but as things are in the photo's above, they're very matte, and it breaks the suspension of disbelief. You could gloss them with something as simple as inks and gloss varnish layers, or if you wanted to go for a realistic gore you should pick up some Tamiya Clear Red (it's not water based - used an old brush to apply - once it's on, it's on for good) because it's pretty amazing for simple, realistic blood effects. If you get the paint, consider adding a little brown ink into it for selective shadows, to deepen the colour.
General shading - This is completely personal preference, so feel free to disregard. I'd take the shadows a touch darker in places. What you want is to have the deepest shadows and recesses darker than the less deep ones. Places like under that flab of skin on his back, and where his arms and legs are heavily creased or touching his body. Consider not highlighting areas that would be in natural shadow so heavily (like those little blisters on his ass, for example). On the whole, a rough aim would be that the shadows get darker as you progress from head to toe, and the highlights become lighter as you progress from toe to head. This also helps draw attention to the facial area, since the brightest parts are near the top of the mini where they'd receive more natural light. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. Note how the areas around his feet are very dark compared to his face and shoulders. My final skin highlight was Pallid Wych Flesh, which was built up from Space Wolves Grey, but I didn't go anywhere near as heavily on the SWG highlights on the legs and belly, and those areas received exceptionally minor PWF highlights, if any. That's an extreme example, but it should give you the idea.
There may be a few other areas that need work, but I think this covers the main points. Overall, the whole model is very flat and matte, and lacks a little depth and contrast. It was still very well done, and I think you're on the right track (love the eyes!), but you just need to make it pop a bit more to really drive the paintjob home.

I got him stripped down of paint. That took nearly a month. I took another week playing around on the paint scheme until I got something I wanted on another nurglish model. He is 95% finished, minus the base. If I can make a killer base that makes the model pop I will take him to games day with me just to see how he does.
