I live in Durban, a port city in South Africa. Access to retired shipping containers means a lot of them end up converted into roadside stores called "spaza" shops.

So I thought I would make a table top version of these based on the shipping containers I have already done.

The blue one is the spaza shop. The orange and white is another South African feature - a "shisa nyama" (an informal pub/tavern).

There are a ton more pictures here if you are interested: http://nothingunpainted.blogspot.com/

Thanks for the kind words.

I designed the templates in Adobe Illustrator and then had them laser cut by a local company that does all my stuff for me (making these things is not my "real" job and I don't have the resources to buy my own laser cutter).

They are made from heavy duty cardboard (a little over 1mm thick) that is built up in layers to give the detail.

I've attached a photo of what they look like unpainted.

Cheers

Aw man, these are great!

You should get a whole little SA style community made as a gameboard. Would be pretty cool.

Nice to see another south african here, too! I live up in joburg.

I'm hoping to supply the scenery for two of the boards at ICON this year so if that comes off all these pieces will be up there.
