I've recently discovered making my own bases and am having a blast with it as I do up my DA army. I'm getting ready to start working on my CSM force and I'm looking for some inspiration on basing ideas. I've got on idea right now that is pretty close to my DA bases, but a bit darker shade of brown and more green grass rather than brown (at work right now so cant post pics).

The thing is, I'd like to do something a little more 'evil' for these guys and at the same time be able to use them on multiple tables and not have it clash. I love this guys bases (http://bloodofkittens.com/rantineminor/category/de-army-painting) but I've tried a couple test bases and I can't get them as nice as his.

So if you have any ideas or pictures of cool chaosy evil bases, throw em up!

Most people seem to agree that grass doesn't work well with chaos armies. Most of my army is slate based, which seems to work quite well, although it can get quite heavy when there's a lot of it.

I don't want to hijack your thread... but I searched for old 'base chart' and my interest is specifically CSM/CD - I got here hah.

Does the DP have same size base as hellbrutes? ...is that 60mm?

Non-termie lords are still on 25mm right? ...what about the Great Unclean... is he on a 40mm or 60mm?

Thanks... BTW I am planning to use Dragon Forge bases; specifically the Desecrated Lands set because you can add water/sewage/blood trails in the run offs. Chaos-ish but perhaps not what you were describing.

I have a khorne themed army so I do all of my bases in a snow theme, I like the way it clashes, that way I can also add lots of blood and skulls and have it stand out on the base.

I like to go for a more subtle approach to basing.. Maybe some scorched grass with a few blood flecks on it? With my Grey Knights (Who are actually CHAOS GREY KNIGHTS WOAH) I had them all cutting up Imperial Guardsmen as basing, and just had slate with blood spray from their weapons across their bodies and bases :3

dead grass works with CSM. Other options include mud, snow, ice, lava, dead guardsmen.... there's a lot you can do. You can even take the spiky fence bits, and other stuff, shave them along one edge so the they almost lie flat, and truss it up like stuff poking up out of the mud. Grasping hands reaching up and out...

even the happy flowery grass would work. You'd just have to arrange the model in exactly such a way that you could tell where the model walked from, and leave black/burnt boot-prints in their wake, with unfortunate bunnies splattered as well.

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.

Tell me more about these spiky fence bits, please! I'm not sure if what I'm picturing is what you mean.

CSM Vehicle accessories. Slice off at the base, so that when you apply glue at the slice, it's not horizonal (spikes parallel to base), but slightly angled up (spikes pointing up at say, 5-20* angles). Apply mud/texturing medium either side , because it's a thick bit. (in fact, you might want to reverse the order, so that the imprint of the spiky fence bits is in the mud-texture). And the marine is standing on it, as though his weight caused the portion under him to sink, and the other portion to lift.... or it's just ruins of an old graveyard/defense structure.

Ok, that's the sprue I was thinking, just wanted to make sure...thanks for clarifying!

I think I'm leaning this route....black or dark brown earth. Vehicle accessory spiky bitz and some skulls sort of buried in the earth. Ok, I'm liking this, thanks folks!

I'm currently working on my own bases for my CSM army. I've decided to use a combination of wartorn cityscape and chaos temple - based on the warbands homeworld.
This might not be as generic as a slate base and will look strange on some tables. But maybe there is something in there that inspires you for your own bases.

The 4 yellow-green ones are pressmolded from a master i created.

Looks nice! I really like the bricks stacked on the back one. Are those just pieces of sprue carved to look like bricks?

Yes. Those bricks once where sprues. But carving them into bricks is a very time consuming work ... Next time I'll try to create a pressmold if ido something similar.

I love the middle selection there, but seriously question my ability to paint them to the standard in the picture!

I'm doing lava bases for my CSM, this is the big one for my maulerfiend, not super difficult, just break up bits of cork tile and space out to have gaps for lava flow, and the fill in the gaps with white glue and let that dry into the lava. And then litter with skulls and spikey things if that's not sinister enough

That's pretty much spot on to what my dark angels bases look like, only instead of lava its a brown dirt/stone mix in between the cork. While it does look great, and I like your lava , I wanted to do something a little different for my chaos army.

How about using a base that looks like your regular tabletop, but have corruption of some sort (slime, spines/spikes, magic etc.) pooling around their feet or following them in a trail?

That reminds me, I see a lot of people post about white glue with superglue dripped on. There are always mentions of interesting effects, so, open your window and turn all the fans on, because that is chemical reaction.... Hot glue can also be used to amusing effect.
