At work we have talked about starting a 40k escalation league. Asking that those who participate start a new army or add new figures to an existing army. Armies will increase by 250 points every two weeks. The first three games do not have a minimum to their for org requirement, but maximums still apply. The players will have two weeks from the first day to build, paint, and play there first game. Ever sense getting into Warhammer 40k, I have had a soft spot for Tyranids. And I enjoy many RTS, especially Starcraft. So the escalation league seemed like the perfect time to try my hand at building my dream tyranid army I have had in mind for close to a decade. The league begins Aug 1st. And I already have a good start on my army.

For my Venomthropes, I wanted to model them after the Zerg Defiler. (As there purpose is very similar in both games)

While at work, I found some old forgotten alien resin casts. Which looked perfect to me to use as a base for an Zerg Overlord. Which I will use in 40k as either a Mycetic Spore or a Tervigon.

Spawn more overlords!!!

Playing around with the idea of mixing rippers with spore mines to use as banelings. Not quite likeing the look... Any suggestions?

And for my SwarmLord, a Zerg Queen. Though right now it is very much a WIP.... an ugly WIP. But once the details are added it should look significantly better.

Other ideas for the army...
Zerglings = Hormogaunts and Termigaunts
Overseer = Doom of Malan'tai
Lurker = Trygon / Mawloc
Mutalisk = gargoyles
Nydus Canal = Mycetic Spore?
Ultralisk = Trygon / Tyranofex?

Any input or suggestions are appreciated.

Fantastic! Definitely subscribing. Maybe you could flesh out the Banelings with some Green Stuff so the spore mines don't appear to stick out as much.

Just a quick little update. Bought some Lotus seed pods to use as the back of the swarm hosts. The figures sticking out of the pod are headless Gaunts. (as I still need to make zergling heads). The body is a rough proto type. I need to extend the armor from the face most of the way up the back as a solid piece. then make a large organic connection between the body and the pod. And significantly widen the armor on the legs. The Defilers have there armor on now, and I am feeling satisfied with how they look.

EDIT: Almost forgot, my boss posted a video of me working on this army on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdfqBKxOfgA). I asked for suggestions there on what to do with the army. One suggestion was to use the Zerg-Protoss Hybrid as the Doom of Malan'tai. Which I tough was perfect. I will probably use the hybrid from the secret level in the first starcraft 2 release, wings of liberty.

In da middle of da WAAAGH! Australia.

Very nice conversions, I like them and I don't even play starcraft!
As many others have said, the carnifex/overlords are my favourite, I like the ponderous floating feel to them.
Keep up the good work!

Quick update, been busy aw work and home, but got some work done on the Doom / Zerg-protoss Hybrid. He is based off of the actual in game 3d model used. not the fan art i posted earlier...

Needs a lot of detail touch ups on the head and such, but so far im happy with the result.

Great concept Igenstilch!
Everything is looking great.
Have you thought about mixing adrenal glands and rippers for the banelings. Maybe sculpt a few tiny legs to scuttle about on?
The sporemine versions look a bit top heavy imo.

Been re-thinking my zerg / tyranid army a bit. For now I will be using swarm hosts as Tervigons. But I will most likely make some Infestors, which spawn the infested terran, this allows me to convert a ton of spar junk marines into usable units. And for my Swarm Lord, I will take a marine sized female figure to make Kerrigan out of, and have her ridding a Nydus Worm (like the cutscene). Which will leave the zerglings I made to be used as Hormagaunts. I might go back later and make Locusts, if I fins a base model I'm happy with.

I meantime, zerglings!

As an FYI a fairly easy way to replicate the "creep" texture is pools of white glue with standard super glue dripped on top. it will cure into random organic squiggles.

I was hoping to get some bases from Epoch Studioz (http://epochstudioz.weebly.com/index.html), though what I have used in the past was tacky glue with a paint mixed in liberally applied to the base.

not bad.

But if you have a spare piece of foamcore or cardboard do try the method I mentioned. It will be MUCH cheaper than ANY custom Resin base. and would also work as an addittion to any resin bases. just check out the textures you can generate.

here is a pic of the base I made for my Nurgle dread with a small area textured the way I mentioned.

You've done a great job with the zerglings and as I'm sure everyone will agree that the overlords are amazing. I'd love to see some closer shots of them on their own.
