With the new release of apocalypse, I've been feeling the strange need to begin amassing models again to help my Grey Knights hold back the green tide that my regular opponent has been collecting for some time.

And, in a crazy coincidence, a local GW store is having a 6-week escalation league starting at 500 points and going up by 250 points each week. Bonus points for painted models! That made it a pretty easy decision, and I decided to resurrect my ideas for an Ultramarines battle company, and do the whole thing in the retro colors of the late 90's, complete with green bases! YEAH BABY!!!

I'm hoping that keeping this log will help keep me motivated to keep on painting. I'll be taking a bit of a break starting next week for two weeks, but then it'll be catch-up time and back to the grind! My goal is to have a full battle company done by December....but we must start with one test model, so here it goes!

I'm using an averland sunset base with yriel yellow highlights for the chest eagles and shoulder pad trim. Leadbealcher for the metal parts. The blue is macragge blue airbrushed on, followed by a drybrush of calgar blue and finally finished off with a was of Guillman blue. The red is just Mephiston red and the bases are warboss green.

I needed a paint scheme that was quick and easy, yet created bold results, and I have very fond memories of my Ultramarines that I had back in the day, so I decided to go with this one. Any tips will be appreciated! I consider myself an 'OK' modeler and painter. Not that bad, but certainly not one of those guys that people go ooo and aaah over. I miss mold lines from time to time....or a lot, but I do try and minimize them. Its hard for me to remove those without digging to deeply into the model itself, so any tips on that would be appreciated.

I've got two tactical squads, a rhino and a veteran sergeant (count-as captain) airbrushed and ready for painting. That puts me right at 500 points. For the next step, I'm going to round out the transports and possibly add in a dreadnought. I'm trying to keep it as old-school feeling as possible without using the older minis. I do like the newer ones better, but that's just my preference. Any tips you old-timers have on how to make these a bit better representation of what I'm going for is also appreciated!

Looks mighty fine to me, maybe a little closer view of the model along with some brighter photos would be good.

Oh one thing though, I'm one to talk and all, but you should remove the moldlines, they are especially apparent on the backpack in picture 3 and along the inner leg on picture 2. He still looks very good though!

And yes, on the moldline removal problem, I would suggest either getting a file or be a cheap bastard and me and use your modelling knife. I find it best to fil the knife's blade so that its like I'm going to cut downward, but instead I gently bul the blade along the modline, thus removing it and not creating huge "blast marks" in your model.(I once used that as an excuse for a terminator that I unfortunately did not use this method on..)

Thanks man! I'll try that out on the rest of the squads as I get them. Hopefully I'll just get better as this thing progresses! That's always the goal, right? ;-)

Update #2, a new record for me! (sad, but true...)

Ok, I've got the first tactical squad (Tactical Squad Scipio) well under way, along with Veteran Sergeant Gladius. The good Sergeant leads smaller detachments when Captain Aventus (he's the guy with the lightning claws on the right most transport tray) can't be bothered.

I'm transporting them in a Tablewar case. It's nice, but unfortunately all of the transport trays I've got are already finished like my grey knights bases, so I will just have to live with green bases on brown transport trays.

Just finished my first Tactical Squad! WooHoo!

Tactical Squad Scipio 'The Voidfarers'

I am not good at free hand. I've always wanted to be good enough to do basic free hand things like basic shapes and numbers, but I've never really done much work on it simply because I'm not very good at it. Since I'm going with the old school 'everyone has a back banner' type thing, I'm using this as an excuse to practice my free hand. It's long past time for this!

A bonus internet cookie if someone can tell me what the banner on Sergeant Scipio is!

Also pictured: Squad Scipio's ride. Rhino APC with Pintle Mounted Storm Bolter, my next painting project. I'm going to try and reward myself after completing squads with other non-marine things like rhinos, dreadnoughts, etc...

Not sure if anyone cares, but I'm back from a little hiatus.

Haven't had a whole lot of time to paint, but that is changing and I was finally able to finish Squad Scipio's rhino.

So here it is!

More to come tomorrow! I've had a supply drop!

Well, it has been a long, difficult semester in school, and as such I'm WAY behind on my painting. I have found a bit of time to finish my second tactical squad and my first drop pod though! Hooray!

Also, I've been trading, and am now in possession of some Blood Angels! I will be using my Death Company for the Apocalypse formation, and they will have a LR Crusader all to themselves. Included as part of the trade, however, was a regular 'ol land raider! It's needing some TLC and it's just BEGGING to be given to Sergeant Chronus of the Ultramarines! I've already disassembled it and gotten it ready for a Simple Green bath. Once it's properly stripped, I'll be adding some etched brass to it and giving it a new lease on life! Exciting!

I have learned a few things since I started this little project. 1) I hate painting Drop Pods. 2) It's taking me a VERY long time to get this stuff done!

So just a little update on my battle company project:

Painted:
2x Tactical Squads
1x Rhino
1x Drop Pod

Assembled:
6x Bikes (1 sergeant w/ combi-melta, 2 melta guns)
1x Attack Bike w/ multi-melta
1x Land Speeder w/ Typhoon Missile Launcher & multi-melta
1x Command Squad
- Standard Bearer w/ Lightning Claw
- Apothecary
- Company Champion w/ Power Axe
- 3x Veterans w/ Storm Shield & Lightning Claw
1x Company Commander (LE Sicarius Model)
1x Chaplain w/ Plasma Pistol (old school classic model!)
1x Chief Librarian Tigurius
3x Centurions w/ Grav-Amp and Grav-Cannons
10x Sternguard Veterans (1 sergeant w/ power sword, 2 heavy flamers, 4 combi-meltas, 3 bolters)
5x Scouts (4 Sniper Rifles, 1 missile Launcher)
1x Sergeant Telion
1x Rhino
1x Land Raider Crusader (for the Command Squad)
1x Venerable Dreadnought
5x Devestators (Sergeant, 2x Lascannons, 2x Plasma Cannons)

Unassembled/ NiB:
1x Assault Squad
2x Tactical Squads
5x Bolter Marines (for the Devestator Squad)
2x Rhinos
3x Centurions

Soooooo.....yeah....I've got my work cut out for me. On deck is the Company Commander and the Command Squad followed by their LRC. I should probably paint Tigurius first as for most regular games he'll be my go-to HQ choice, but I'm working on a battle company (in my head anyway) and it just seems like I need the actual company command squad done and dusted to make a 'proper' Company list!
