I have long been a fan of the Tau, but have never liked the Ethereal models. I prefer to think of the Ethereals as wizened hermits, guiding the course of history from behind the scenes.

I saw a bitchin' conversion elsewhere on the interwebs and decided to replicate it. My Tau army uses predominantly dark blue colors with yellow highlights, so I decided to reverse for this model to make him match, but stand out.

Please let me know what you think. The little bowl thing is intended to be a tactical display. I'm going to gloss it as soon as I find my glass paint ><.

As a point of reference, it took me about two hours total to paint him.

Totally awesome and unique. Although I feel that for a hermity type fellow his clothes are a little clean!

I like it a lot. An imaginative use of the fantasy Empire Wizard kit.

I digging the clean cloths, ethereals usually are more of observing leaders than front line companions.

I particularly like the robe. I've done a few conversions with the Wizard kit and trying to make that solid block of cloth with hardly any creases in it look good is no easy task.

The hats like those tend to be worn by the water caste rather than the ethereals, though the use of the use of the wizard kit was a great idea.

Fezman... I love your conversion. I actually use Necron allies and might have to steal that idea to represent a Necron Lord with Resurrection Orb!

The big blocks of cloth are definitely hard to do. The yellow has about 8 different layered colors and the blue has about 5. I find blue requires fewer colors to make look good.

I'd be very happy if you did this. I stole the idea from someone else! haha.

You'll need a couple of things. The main body and robes are from the plastic Empire Wizards box. It has enough pieces to make two Ethereals. The head is a basic unhelmeted Fire Warrior/Pathfinder head with the top filed flat and a Crisis Suit shield generator glued on. I cut the top of the staff off and glued on the extra bit from the XV25 plastic stealth suit kit, but any appropriately tau looking bit would work fine.

Post a picture once you get your conversion assembled!

Any chance you could post how exactly you got such an amazing cloak painted?!

I just started back again after 8+ year absence, and I never was good at cloth/cloaks in the first place...so if you could put something together (series of pictures would be sa-weet!) in the modeling section...I'd give you my 3rd born. Mind you, he's 7 and quite...um...feisty...but hey, he's free!

The cloak is actually pretty easy. It's only two paints. It's Tau Sept Ochre and Bleached Bone. Well, the new ones actually, but I don't know the names off the top of my head.

Basecoat in ochre. Mix in just a little bone and do everything but the cracks. Mix in a little more bone and do it again, but leave more of the low areas uncovered. I do this about 8-9 times with more and more bone each time. It ends up building up a nice, almost blended look. At the end the paint is about 50/50 ochre/bone.

I did the same for the blue areas but the The Fang and whatever paint is slightly brighter.

I'll work on a video tutorial for the cloak this weekend.
