I'm painting D&D miniature from Reaper minis - no, it's not Warhammer, but you folks are the authority on this stuff.

It's a were-tiger or some kind of tiger man.
A friend of mine is having me paint it for him.

He's requested that it should be a white tiger, but made no requests for the rest of the color scheme.
That's probably good, because it leaves that sort of thing up to me.
But - - - I'm not really sure myself.

I've already made one attempt, but it turned out too monochrome.
I'm going to strip the model and start over - using the suggestions made here.

The fur is grey drybrushed with white, and then shaded with a blue ink/glaze.
Blue was used to give it some more color so that it's not just all shades of grey, and to give it a magical and ethereal look.
I'd be open to suggestion as to how I could improve that or shift toward a more appealing style.

The trim and clothing was also made blue
And the metal parts are meant to be grey and silver - I'm trying to get better at using non-metallic metal and I think I can do better on a second try.

The problem is - this all ended up being not very visually appealing and quite boring.

* What color scheme could I use to make it look better? Maybe the clothing/trim should be yellow or green?
* How do you like the shading on the fur? how can I improve that? what other style might I try?
* What else might I do better?

The attached image is unfinished, but it's mostly done as much as I was going to do.
Just need to finish the mouth, eyes, thing on the chest and sword, and other details

Well blue on blue will look kinda boring.

I think adding some bone colors and some brown leathers can help break up the blue.

or perhaps gold armor plates.

you could always try to MS paint over your current photo to see how it looks

Make the armor plates gold - yeah that will look great, perhaps even regal.
I'll have to do a practice run for gold non-metallic metal, hopefully I can pull that off.

Do you think the other stuff could be brown?
perhaps a khaki/leather color for the clothing and straps

Have a look at a white tiger and you will see that it is almost pure white. While I appreciate that you were trying to show texture and detail the blue does not do it any favours or justice. I'd start with a solid white coating then wash it with a mid grey letting that flow into the detail, then a very light dry brush to finish it off.

You don't think so?
I've looked at pictures of cartoon white tigers and they're often shaded with a very cool blue color.
While real tigers are mostly white and grey, some with light brown in places.

Perhaps I'll try again without the blue shading on the fur.
I'm already changing to gold armor plating instead of silver, so that will look more appealing with a clean white fur without all that blue shading.

Thanks for you help

I know I'm digging up an old thread, but I'd like to post an update to this miniature.

Took the advice provided here (get rid of the blue shading, use gold metal instead of silver)
and it turned out *much* better.
Finally produced acceptable non-metallic metal effects here too - not the best, but much better than I've ever been able to get.

Thanks for the help!
