Russ looks good, better than a lot of the artwork I have seen him featured in which gives me hope for Magnus. Not sold on his face but I think some more angles are needed.

Also loving the TSons transfer sheet, typical that they release it one day after I started carving symbols out of plasticard with great difficulty...

Ah, so you're why they released them now.

My thanks, in that case.

I heard that when Russ charges into battle he yells "You fiends will never see the new IA book!", and then he slaughters both the Thousand Sons and our dreams.

He's a pretty clean model compared to what I was expecting. I love the banded armour.

Without knowing a lot of how the Horus Heresy progresses does Russ's sword end up becoming Drach'nyen or am I just imagining the similarity?

Nah. Drach'nyen is old. Older than humanity. Abaddon got it during the first Black Crusade, after passing some tests set up by the chaos pantheon.

Russes' sword does have a distinctly Chaotic look to it though, I noticed that earlier. I wonder if FW will elaborate on the backstory. We know from the axe Morkai used by Grimnar that the Space Wolves are not afraid to reconsecrate a Chaos weapon.

None of which precludes Russ from having used it in the Heresy...

But I agree, if only because a Primarch-scaled weapon would be a hand and a half taller than Minibaddon!

It undoubtedly takes some design cues from it though. Wouldn't it be interesting if it turned out the Warmaster 'gifted' Russ a weapon to ensure his success on Prospero? You know, the battle where he far exceeded his remit and went slightly overboard on the "reasonable force" angle?

Abaddon wield's Horus's claw, so that's doesn't mean Russ's sword isn't Drach'nyen.

I doubt it is though, just because it'd be really weird.

Surprised we're seeing Russ (and presumably Magnus) before Dorn and Alpharius.

I wonder if we'll get his rules at the open day?

Russ and Magnus are kind of the figurehead models for the next IA book. Just like Guilliman and the Warlord Titan were for HH5.
Dorn and the Fists were kind of shoehorned into HH3, and Alpharius has already been released, you just don't recognize him yet. Or do you?

Drach'nyen was stuck in the Tower of Silence (on Uralan, in the Eye of Terror) for millennia before the Heresy broke out. It's also a warp entity of rather titanic potential. Some very creative retconning would have to happen to make it Russ' former weapon.

Does it look like the sword on the book cover he's on? Did that sword have a name?

Yeah it does. He has a sword called Mjalnar, but that was a frost sword with teeth from a kraken (much like Krakenmaw that it replaced) so that would be a Chainsword.

Yeah, doesn't quite tally with the descriptions, but does with the artwork. I notice the actual model makes the spikes above the hilt look more like teeth though- maybe that is their nod to the description?

Beard? Nah, he needs some truly manly muttonchops.

people say the same about Ragnar, even though the Blackmane is the wolf he killed (the pelt on his armor)...
the Wolves are Nordic inspired, so blond makes sense...
the lack of facial hair of any kind is a bit of a bummer...
i really look forward to painting him, hough
i haven't painted a Primarch yet, but Russ has always been my favorite, so i will have to make time or this one...

Hopefully not long. Russ should have a beard. He looks stupid without one. Then again, I feel that Gulliman and El'Johnson should have beards too.

My designs of the primarchs are way better!

When was he ever portrayed with facial hair? -I ask because I've never seen it or read it but it's a pervasive interpretation contrary to the imagery.

nope, never seen him with facial hair..
it's just my pro-beard bias talking, and my love for the original Grimnar model, and the new Ulrik

now i just need to take a closer look at the wolves from the new Grimnar's sleigh, to see if they will require less sculpting to get rid of the traces, to make Freki and Geri, than the Thunderwolves would...
i've been wanting the plastic Grimnar, but have no interest in his ride...
it will make decent crashed terrain, though

cheers
