Finland... the country next to Sweden? No! That's Norway! Finland is to the east! No! That's Russia!

Greetings!

I'm building an army for the annual GW Armies on Parade, and I was inspired by the beautiful forests of Finland.
I have some ideas to execute my vision, but I'm having some trouble on modelling moss for the bases.
What would be the best way on achieving a realistic looking coat of moss for tabletop miniatures? On a side note I'm not very good at using green stuff, so I would be delighted if you have a non-GS solution.

Here is the look I am striving for:

Something I picked up from a friend for doing easy lichens, corals, mosses and other short greenery:

Take a piece of foam, like what came in old blister packs of models.
Spread some super glue on whatever you want to look mossy.
Stick the foam to the glue, and let it dry.
Pull the foam off. It should leave behind a stubbly patch of foam.
Prime, and paint your moss however you want it to look.

Sounds like a good idea... Does the GW army case foam do the same trick?
I can't try it out atm.

Moss can also be done using old school flock - it has fallen out of favour as static grass has come into the fore, but it can still be purchased - just make sure it is pressed down firmly and well coated in glue... use a hairdrier if possible to speed drying so that you get a "thick" layer, rather than something more bobbly.

Fine sand works very well too.

That would be significantly easier.

Maybe I could use foam as explained above, and combine it with fine sand or dirt to achieve the result I'm looking for... hmm...
Thanks for everyone, I'll post some results when I get the chance!

Fine and Course turf or the mix should do it.

as mentioned by desubot, mix of fine and coarse turf. I've used flock for the same purposes, though, it looks to me to be the same thing...

Just go back in afterwards and paint it up. You can also add different colors of turf into the mix, progressively brightening your mix as you move along, or darkening it. Brighter=more alive, darker=deader, and the overall color depth gives it a bit of life too. don't forget to make use of a couple patches of red or grey/white to represent lichen as well. avoiding the monochrome goes a long way to making it look spiffy.

To glimpse the future, you must look to the past and understand it. Names may change, but human behavior repeats itself. Prophetic insight is nothing more than profound hindsight.

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.

I will be able to take a more detailed picture about my results later on today, but for now:
