Looks like the floodgates will be open on mobile gaming involving GW IP -

Warhammer 40K fans are being spoiled at the moment, as another title based on the popular IP has just been announced. Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf is a new title from HeroCraft, set to be released in 2014 on iOS, Android and PC.

It's to be a free-to-play turn-based strategy game that uses collectible cards to drive the actions of 3D characters. Gamers will play their cards and watch the action play out in realtime, as they lead the Space Wolves into battle against the Word Bearers and the Necrons.

There's different paths to pursue, based on your playing style (Grey Hunter, Wolf Scout, Blood Claw, or Wolf Guard), as players take on a campaign with branching storylines in a variety of different environments.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf
"HeroCraft have presented us with a unique and exciting vision for a game based on this most evocative and barbaric chapter of Space Marines - the Space Wolves," said Games Workshop's Jon Gillard. "Given that, their clear passion for the IP, and their experience in the market, we are only too happy to be working with them on this project."

"We are all very excited to work with Games Workshop on this project, particularly our development team, who are not only games industry veterans but also Warhammer 40,000 fans who know the series well. As a gamer myself, I'm also excited about the mix of tactical turn based play using my own deck of cards to lead my Space Wolves to victory." added HeroCraft's Alexey Sazonov.

Looks very similar to the DOW II engine -

I like what I see so far. I'm not exactly understanding the card thing though. Are these collectable cards that you buy separately or a random in game function?

It sounds like the Injustice iOS game, which has "cards" that you get from "packs" earned with in-game currency or purchased with real money.

The "cards" give you upgrades, characters, etc that then "fight".

We'll find out soon enough eh.

We're not going to see another proper 40K game for a while, are we :(

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?

I would not say that, but right now it would depend on who actually gets the licenses and if a big name publisher/developer decides to get on board again.

Ah, that would make since.

When I was thinking cards for some reason I was seeing something along the lines of my kid's Skylanders game. Buy some cards get a character, squad, what have you and then load that into the game.

Neat I guess. I'm hoping we get a real game soon as a lot of these games are turning out to be glorified shovelware.

There've been so many announced the last few months I can't keep track of them.

There is:
Warhammer quest (released)
Space Hulk (just released)
Armageddon
Space Wolf
I know I'm missing 1-2.

And isn't Sega working on Total Warhammer? Or was that just speculation since they got the license?

I propose a devoted thread to keeping track of them all.

No, because Angry Birds. PC/console gaming is dying and mobile gaming is the future, blah blah blah.

For the development time of a dedicated PC/console game in the line of a triple A quality game, five of these games could be produced and not require a huge publisher.

Considering that the license for 40k on consoles/PCs just got out of limbo with THQ having died it might be awhile.
Just sayin'. It might not have anything to do with "PC/console gaming is dying and mobile gaming is the future".

Also as I said, this is very similar to the Injustice: Gods Among Us mobile game that came out alongside of the console/PC game.

For a company the prides itself on producing the best, why do they license their IP out to make such garbage?

Quick cash for minimal/no effort. Fits GW perfectly.

'trash' to you, maybe. Myself i prefer actual computer games rather than android ftp nonsense, but i see nothing in the original post that looks like 'trash'.

The plural of codex is codexes.

Space Wolves... + cards? I find it ironic that a card game would be more suited to their arch nemesis, the Thousand Sons. Try to imagine a space wolf playing cards!

Eternal War as well (MMOTPS in the same vein as planetside 2 + space marine combo)

They did indeed get the total warhammer license.

Yeah totally, just look at Valve and Zynga - Steam is a complete flop while the latter have never been stronger!

Sid, you're owning this thread. I came in with a well formed and vehement opinion to post but being honest everything you've said rang true
No sarcasm intended btw.

This is a quantity type of a game. Not a Quality type of a game.

IP licensing is a way to quick cash and do (proverbial) nothing at all.

Wish GW would do a quality game instead of the cheap crud and gimmicks they have been throwing out of late.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

Sega didn't buy it (Kind of) The Creative Assembly did. Which is owned by Sega, I think. But yes, they are apparently working on a fantasy RTS/RTT game. Looking forward to it, after all, they are the creators of the Total War series, the best turn based, world dominating RTS out there.

Aaaand to stay on topic, looks good, looks expensive, looks like I'll have to pay more and more to keep playing (buying better stuff etc) so I doubt I'll buy it. Does look good though, a lot like DOW2.
