Subject: Frothers Unite - 2013/14 Charity Mini - TANK GIRL
The VERY disreputable gaming forum www.frothersunite.com has just announced it's 2013/14 Charity figure - Tank Girl, plus Booga plus Camp Koala and BIG PLUS - the Tank!
These figures are available to people making suggested donations as below. NOTE WELL - they are not yet sculpted and will not be finished/ going out until the end of the year at the earliest. Sculptors are Kev White (Hasslefree) for Tank Girl, Steve ‘Relic’ Blunt for Booga (did the Aquila figure below), Jo ‘Snuurg’ Brumby for Camp Koala (did the Gila Munja below) and Ian ‘Geronimo’ Brumby (did the bases below) (Both Brumby's Fenris Games) with the assistance of Nigel Higgins and Ian Crouch for the Tank.
About
.Here we go again in another shameless attempt to raise as much money for Charity as possible
Description
The Next Frothers Charity Thingy
Most of you will know how this works by now but, those who don’t, here’s what it’s all about…
Every year(ish) we try and raise a few bob for Charities; specifically Cancer Research and the MS Society...
We do this by producing some very special miniatures and you do this by making a donation direct to the charities via two dedicated Just Giving pages. But, more of that later.
We’re extremely pleased that this time, in addition to our ‘usual suspects’ we’ve recruited a few new ones
Cast & Crew:
Miniature sculpting genius (read that as you will) Kev White of Hasslefree Miniatures needs no introduction (although he does regularly need a stepladder if anyone has a spare). Friend to the Gurkhas and all round top bloke.
Ian ‘Geronimo’ Brumby of Fenris Games and Cthulu Wars is also back again and this time we’ve let him off basing duties so he can make something bigger, much bigger assuming the tentacles don’t get him first…..
Jo ‘Snuurg’ Brumby is also back for a second year on creature duties – we’re really grateful both the guys are finding time to help us especially with how busy they are – stars, the pair of them.
Steve ‘Relic’ Blunt is another who’s a glutton for punishment – he’s a relative newcomer to the putty pushing lark but, as anyone who saw last year’s Aquila knows, he’s a bit handy
And where would we be without a mould maker and caster? Nowhere, that’s where. Luckily they don’t come much better than Pete Brown. He makes a lousy cup of coffee but, thankfully, he’s much better with rubber and white metal.
The Mystery Frother – once again we’re incredibly thankful to the assistance of the MF who has, most generously, offered to subsidise the postage – without his help this project would be almost impossible to run.
And joining up for the first time we welcome aboard
Nigel Higgins, a man who had enough sense to get out of the gaming industry but still, thankfully, retains several odd habits like supporting West Ham and searching for ghosts. He’s also a master of cutting up and sticking little bits of plasticard together so we’ve put him in charge of the fiddly bits.
Offering advice and assistance to Nigel and Ian is Ian Crouch; a danger to Kentish wildlife and a man once described as ‘looking like a psychopathic Russian hitman’. Personally I think that’s a bit hard on psychopathic Russian hitmen.
Last, but by no means, least, we’re incredibly grateful to top artist and all round good egg, Rufus Dayglo for the artwork for this years’ postcard. Ruf is possibly best known for his work drawing the Nesquik Rabbit (ducks and runs for cover) as well as 2000AD, DC Comics, Tank Girl and many, many others.
We thought long and hard about the subject for this years’ Charity Thingy (no we didn’t) – trying to find a character that accurately sums up what Frothers is all about; loud, anarchic, foul-mouthed, probably a bit smelly and having an unhealthy interest in animals, guns and armoured vehicles. It could only be the one, and only…
TANK GIRL
Last time we raised £9,000 for the 2 charities – this time we want to raise a lot more.
To aid this…
Kev will be sculpting Tankie
Steve will be sculpting Booga
Jo will be sculpting Camp Koala
Ian (assisted by Nige & the other Ian) will be sculpting the Tank. Yes, you heard that right, the Tank!
Tank Girl, Booga & Camp Koala will be cast in white metal and limited to 200 casting initially and each Tank Girl miniature will be accompanied by an exclusive Rufus Dayglo postcard.
The Tank will be cast in resin and will be available in much more limited numbers.
So how do I get one?
Simple make a donation to one (or both) of the charities via the Just Giving pages:
And then, AND THIS IS IMPORTANT, send us an e-mail to charitymini@gmail.com including:
1) Your Name
2) The address you want the mini(s) sent to
3) Your Just Giving donation reference number
If you don’t do this we don’t know where to send them!
How much of money should I donate?
All of it, of course! Seriously, we want to raise as much as is possible.
Suggested donations are:
Tank Girl £20
TG, Booga & Camp Koala £35
TG, Booga, Camp Koala and the Tank £70
When will I get them?
We’re hoping to have the sculpts ready to show by Dec 1 and going off for casting as soon as possible afterwards – veterans will know that this doesn’t always go to plan; everyone involved is doing this in their spare time for nothing – no individual or company makes anything out of this so please be patient and we’ll try (for once) to get everything out to you as soon as humanly possible.
Cheers, and many thanks,
Dags
Tank Girl was created by Alan Martin and Jamie Hewitt – without them this wouldn't be happening
Last year the subject was Judge Minty (raised over £9k for Cancer Research and the MS Society) to give you an idea of the sculptors'/ production quality:
[Edited to change the painted Minty pic as the first one I linked to stopped working and to fix some spellings]

I'm glad to see another Frothers charity thingy, i was starting to think there wasn't going to be one this year.
I already made a $50 donation earlier today, as they're allowing people to reserve one of the Tank Girl, Booga, Camp Koala and the Tank deals with a smaller donation if they e-mail charitymini@gmail.com and say that they will be adding additional funds later down the line. While its a little risky donating first without seeing the greens, i have faith that the guys involved will create some amazing models and in the end its all for a good cause.

On a side note, can someone point me to where I could get one of those Judge Minty miniatures?
He is fantastic - can see him leading my Arbites army.

I can't make any promises, but drop Dags (Jon) an email at the charitymini@gmail.com address or via Frothers/ Facebook and he might have spares (I think that the metal ones ran out but not sure about the trollcast ones). He was great at sorting me out with one of the Sasha Grey figures from the previous year along with my Minty. Minty is a rather nice figure - wish Mongoose could get Kev White to do some sculpts for them.

Update from Jon Atter/ Dags including the ability to make donations by mobile text if you are UK based
"You lot are utterly brilliant!
We've raised over £2,500 in the first day and a bit - thank you so much
Now, I'm fully aware things are tight at the moment and you've already been extremely generous but there is now another way you can make a contribution if you are in the UK and have a mobile 'phone:
Text FUUK 69 £1 to 70010 (STOP SNIGGERING!) to donate a pound to Cancer Research or
Text FUUK 70 £1 to 70010 to donate a pound to the MS Society"
Language, off-topic-ness, forthright opinions and pictures of topless ladies when things get too dull.
For example, the Dakkadakka find a game forum bills itself as
"Looking for a game/store/club but can't find one? Post your requests for games and announce local stores & clubs here."
Frothers is
"If you are looking for a group of gamers to join and theres no club nearby (or there is but they are all c***s) then post your details here! "
You won't find "gak" or "feth" being used much there.
It's a great forum if your tastes lean away from the GW side of miniature gaming and has plenty of industry people there that can give good advice, but don't expect to have sensitivities respected or your hand held. Some people like it, others not so much.
I'd wondered what the source of of those Minty models. How much is one expected to donate to have these ones?
The suggested values are in the original post
Suggested donations are:
Tank Girl £20
TG, Booga & Camp Koala £35
TG, Booga, Camp Koala and the Tank £70
Not too bad if they are the same quality as Minty. These should be fun to paint and will probably end up on my mantle, piece in the living room as my wife is a massive TG fan

The bad news is that there are only 10 of the tanks left to go..."
If you were thinking of going for this, I'd move quickly - Jon is fine with people making a small 'holding' donation now to reserve the tank then topping it up later - just make sure you email him with details when you do.
Honestly, I think its a mistake to have so few of the tanks available. I understand that everyone involved in this this project is doing it 100% for free, but since there are only 30-40 tanks actually being produced i really think that they're going to limit the amount of money they will be able to raise in the end.
Especially when you consider that most of the tanks have already been claimed in only 3-4 days, even though no concept art or models have been shown off yet. It really makes me wonder just how large the response will be when they actually have all the models sculpted.

Fair question...
Numbers have to be limited for several reasons; firstly, time; once Ian, Nige and Crouchie have finished the master it will take much longer to cast 40 tanks than it will to spin cast 200 metal minis... a lot longer. Secondly, cost; Ian (and myself) will be casting these up in between regular day jobs that are needed to pay the bills. Finally, postage costs; the 'mystery frother' and myself pay the postage (last year it was over £500) - the tank is going to be a bulky item (although not particularly heavy) and with the new UK size based postal charges it will cost a chunk to send (especially overseas).... any more than 40 is going to cripple us. Obviously, we want to raise as much as possible but we have to set sensible limits that we know we'll actually be able to fulfill. Hope that makes sense!
Also, to those interested in getting hold of the previous Charity minis; there are still a few of the Trollcast Mintys, a couple of Trollcast Sashas and some metal Aquilas and Gila Munja left.
If anyone wants to get them, just make a donation via the Just Giving pages linked above and then drop me a line at charitymini@gmail.com with your shipping details. Suggested donations are £15 for Minty and £10 each for the others. However, I am away 'til the 19th and won't be able to post anything 'til then.
Cheers,
Dags

@Dags,
Thanks for the reply. I had a feeling that the number was low due to the lengthy casting time, but after reading all that i can definitely understand why you've decided to limit the amount of tanks. I think i said it in my e-mail, but i will be throwing in a little extra to help cover the ROW postage.
Concerning Aquila, would it be possible for me to include him in my 'top up' donation for the tank? I'll be making it in roughly 2 weeks, but if their aren't that many left I'll send you an e-mail if necessary so i can have one reserved.

I didn't see any confirmation emails, so I'm assuming I managed to snag one of the tanks *fingers crossed*. Looking forward to seeing what the models turn out like this year

I didn't get one either, but I'm only in for Tank Girl, Booga & Camp Koala.
I've had e-mails from every donor - thank you all 8)
Tried to keep up with them but it's just me and with 100+ in the first day some got missed - again, send me another now it's calmed down a bit and I can confirm straight away.

So are any tanks left at all please?
I don't want to throw in a £70 donation and not get one. I also dont mind throwing some money your way to cover postage. Every little helps.

Sorry to sound very mercenary, I don't want to put in that much money, unless I'm actually gonna get a tank! Bit of a risk on a maybe. :( I know and understand that's not the whole the point, but with money how it is......
And it's not worth passing on my details and wont have a reference number without doing so.
