Hey guys,

I have played in several tournaments at my local game shop. I usually am in top tier, but I have yet to get 1st place. My last tourney that I played in was 1850, and I came out with 2nd place. The list bellow is similar to my 1850 list. We usually play dual objectives (primary and secondary). We have almost all armies covered at the game shop except for Orks.

* Give me your opinion on the list
* What do you like / What would you change
* What have you had great luck with (Combos, units, etc...)
* How do you deal with the newer codexes? Specifically Eldar... Tau do not usually give me a lot of trouble... just depends on the dice Gods

Looks solid enough, I'd just suggest a few changes. Firstly, drop the second CCS or swap their Flamer and find points for a Regimental Standard, as it is essential to keep your platoon in the fight. The LRBT is not the best variant, I'd probably rather take an exterminator, or find the points for an LC vanquisher, as one S8 pie plate is not the best option. That said, it is cheap, but for the same price you could get a couple of Griffons. Up to you, but I'd take the latter.

I'd also try and get some plasma on at least a couple of vet squads, as it doubles your effective range and your short-range firepower. Maybe drop the second CCS entirely if you need to and just get a standard on the first one. Assuming you know what you're doing (which it sounds like you do) then the list should handle pretty well. I can't offer much advice against eldar, but for tau, the manticore is one of the best FW killers in the game, and Marbo's demo charge makes crisis suits cry if they don't have interceptor, with ID and ignoring armour saves.

One last thing. If you face a lot of assault units, consider leaving the PCS on the ground as the flamers can make an amazing counter-attach unit.

I like the idea of putting in the regimental standard. The CCS is obviously there to issue orders to the platoon, thus making them more effective. I appreciate your input there.

I was almost going to bring two basalisks and not bring the LRBT at all. In my 1850 tourney list... I had the demolisher. It only shined in 1 game. It took out 2 squads... one of which was a termie squad. I wanted to bring something in that would be a tad bit more effective against other things. I have tons of close range fire. I will post an updated list soon... including a few changes.

The PCS does not have to be in the Vendetta; however, they usually end up there. I have had some great success dropping them in next to a almost destroyed unit for an easy KP or dropping them near a point and clearing it off. They also count as scoring which helps out greatly.

Great advice btw!

I would suggest dropping or fixing up the other ccs as well. The standard would be my suggestion to add.

I would also suggest maybe getting one of your vet squads to have plasmas as you have a ton of anti tank as is.

I also wanted to ask a question about the Hydra. They are limited to shooting at flyers now... right? I mean they can shoot at ground units but at BS 1.

I would be happy to be wrong.

Here are my changes to the list. I decided to change the LR tank. I added the regimental standard, plasma guns to the vets, and decided to add some vox casters. In the last tourney I had... I would have dominated a game that I tied (since it stopped at turn 5) if more of my orders had went off. The CCS will be issuing orders to the Infantry Squads. The other rolls are pretty obvious. Some changes may happen depending on opponent, and/or terrain.

Second list is looking better. And the hydra can shoot fliers and skimmers on normal BS, everything else at snap-firing.

I appreciate the input guys. I will make sure to post up a battle report. I should be playing either Tyranids or Dark Angels next weekend. Then the Tourney will be on the 28th. I also enjoyed the Guide to the Guard! Great Read bro!

As stated in the other thread I would say the second list is better, and do put up a battle report, it would be nice to see how this list turns out!

Just got done playing Tyranids! It was a solid game. We played Relic as primary, and purge the alien as secondary.

The game went extremely well till the end. I left my opponent with a Tervigon and a squad of gahnts. The Tervigonn had iron arm, (whatever gives feel no pain), and was a troop choice.

What lost me the game was that Tervigon carrying the relic and me not being able to kill it. Most of the time the dang thing stayed in assault with my troops. He would elect to smash attack and amazingly not be able to hurt me by rolling terrible... Sometimes my grenades would even do a wound... haha

At the end of turn 6 the thing had 2 or 3 wounds on it. I had a plasma vet squad, a melta vet squad, 2 vendettas, my Leman Russ, and a Missle Launcher looking at. It was finally only T7.

Sadly the game ended.

Final score:

Tyranids 6: Primary with First Blood and Line Breaker

Imperial Guard 4: secondary and slay the warlord

Although at the end of the game I had lost a Vendetta, 2 chimeras, the CCS that issued orders, and 1 platoon infantry squad with ML, and 1 vet squad with plasma guns.

I had a huge chunk of my army left. I would say that I should have played the game differently; however, I can never get my troops to hold that dang relic, at least not for long. I had rushed it with 2 squads... the ones that died. That Tervigon was a beast (literaly), which cost me the game!

I absolutely love the suggestions to the list so far. I will be playing Dark Angels soon for another test so that I can formulate an opinion on the army list before the tourney. I will try to get pictures of that game and post them with a better battle report. This game was just out of the blue!

Thanks so much for the advice guys!

I havent tried this but if you have your vets move cruising and the. Flat out onto the relic you should be ontop of it turn 1. Whatever chimeras are left turn 2 unload the troops on the objective and the.after the squad shoots move flat out an block the enemy from shooting the guys on the ground. At that point if chimeras still up (unlikely) then slowly move back while everything else try's to block the tyranids and provides fire support for the relic. Havent tried it but im thinking its possible. Only thing im not sure of is i think flat out requires you to move straight in one direction. Although i may be getting tank shock mixed up with this, can anyone confirm the ruling?

As i primarily play foot guard i find it extremely hard to get the relic as my vets in the vendettas will mostlikely not have any cover when they drop down.

Also how did the artillery go for you, ive had luck with the manticore but last time i used a basilisks it whiffed a lot.

I had better luck with the basalisk this game. It is really back and forth for me. Anytime you are relying on a scatter and it is not weighted, then there are going to be issues. Although there is nothing greater than seeing Space Marines get hit out of cover with one of these. When you remove an entire squad with 1 shot... it is worth it. I also love the ability to snipe out units with barrage. It is really whatever your cup of tea is. I have had worse luck with LRBT than with artillery. I would say that in this game though, the LRBT did a great job!

Per page 72 in the rule book vehicles do not have to move straight forward. So you can just move an additional 6 inches.

Yea I just looked it up after my game I played today, and it could be a pretty neat trick to use.

I personally love my LRBT's, I dont throw upgrades on them but sometimes they soak up so much enemy fire and get great firing lanes at my opponents stuff that they really pull their weight.

I had my second game against Dark Angels last night. The game was really over by the end of turn one.

We had rolled 2 and 5 for the mission types.

Kill points / Relic

My opponent went 1st and missed 17 out of 21 shots with Missile Launchers, lascannons, and Multi-meltas. That was very rough especially when you just need a 3 to hit. He did manage to wipe out my CCS that issues orders.

My first turn was a huge success. I took out about 500 points of his army. One Land Raider was destroyed by the Manticore. His 3 Land Speeders were obliterated by multi-lasers and melta guns. Then I took out a few ML guys with a hit from the basilisk.

Turn 2 did not prove any different. My opponent destroyed 2 chimeras and 60% of the squads inside both. I did not get pinned or broke. That was the extent of the destruction though.

My second turn went about as well as the 1st. 1 vendetta and Marbo came in. The LRBT took out the remaining ML guys with flakk abilities. This was good, now I did not have as much concern for my flyers. The Manticore scored 1 glance and 1 pen on the LR. I was able to widle one squad of termies to 2 with plasma gun fire. I then used marbo to hit the storm shield termies... that killed 3 of them.

Before I could finish my turn, my opponent conceded defeat. He was ready to stop the bleeding. We shook hands and called it.

I believe this list to be a very hard hitting list. I will be playing Tau on Saturday hopefully. I will let you guys know how that one goes. Maybe I can finally remember to take pictures.

Well guys, I finally played against the Tau...

My opponents list did not have any armor in it. He had tons of broadsides, 2 riptides, 3 marker light teams, 4 fire warrior teams, some weird 3 man HQ that I had not played against before... can issue orders... He also had 2 units of (cant remember the name but they deep strike in with meltas).

I was going to post pictures of this battle, but I do not see the need.

The missions were 5 (2 objectives), 4 (6 objectives random point values).

I placed the objectives for 4 in ruins so that my Vendettas could claim them if they needed to.

Deployment was standard and no night fighting turn 1. I also won the imitative role.

This game went about like my last game... by turn 2 I had decimated the opponent. All of the marker lights were of the table. I had decimated 1 squad of fire warriors and 2 squads of broadside units gone, and his HQ choice was gone.

I had lost 1 Chimera by the end of the game. My opponent did not attempt his turn 2.

Finale Score

Imperial Guard :10
Tau: 0

Needless to say, this does not deserve a detailed battle report. What I am finding is that this list is pretty solid. I have plenty of methods to take out my opponents. I will have to be a tad bit more strategic when it comes to missions like relic, but I will be set on the others. I will take pictures at the tourney and let you guys know how it goes. Again, I appreciate all of the input on this list. I think that I just found a new favorite list!!

Well guys the tourney went well! I ended up with 2nd place...

1st: Eldar
2nd: IG
3rd: Eldar
4th: SM/IG
5th: DE
6th Tyrandis

I tabled 2 opponents and got spanked by Eldar. I am not even sure what I would have done against Eldar. I have had so much trouble playing them. The rapeserpants... caused havoc on my chimeras. He had an artillery squad... T7 laying in area terrain which was shrouded... that ate me alive, because I could not ever kill the guns off. I did not concede... I waited till my Vendettas came on the board and decided my new mission was to take out all the rapeserpants! Which I accomplished haha.
