It looks very photoshopped to me.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Definetely photoshopped, look at the right bottom half of the left leg in photo 3 vs photo 4. There is a crack in photo 3 that isn't there in photo 4.

Looks painted. If anything, the white balance was probably adjusted. Do you know who the artist is?

Even though In the third picture that part of the leg is being viewed from an oblique angle that crack is definitely there.

EDIT: I found the artist: MichaƂ Pisarski. He is a professional painter from Poland (of course!) who has won quite a few awards.

Here is his CMoN gallery: http://www.coolminiornot.com/artist/Lan+Studio?browseid=6787185
Here is a model he won a GD with: http://demonwinner.free.fr/polonia/2007/golden_demon_winner.php?categorie=4#1st
His commission studio: https://www.facebook.com/LanArtStudio

I would say he is legit.

On picture three, at the very bottom of his leg on picture three the side of the leg that is barely visible there is a crack running from top to bottom on the indent of the armor plate, when you look at picture 4 that crack is not there.

No, it definitely is. It is barely visible (again, due to the angle of the picture) but it is there. That artist is insanely talented, he wouldn't need to Photoshop a crack on armor to impress people. He just took home a silver Demon at Germany's Games Day in the Diorama category, it would have been a gold anywhere else but he was up against the breathtaking Tyranid horde vs. Blood Angels diorama made by Roman from MassiveVoodoo.

I think that is the line shading more than a crack that appears and then disappears.

It's pretty disgusting but there are people out there that can and do paint like that.
I think it must be some kind of X-men style mutation.

I "fear" it's genuine skill... The strong contrast bay be accentuated by taking the photo with - sorry for the lack of better terms - less light and more exposure.
(A friend of mine achieved a similar level of contrast in photos by using a dark background, putting the light source around 3m/10' away and using a loooong exposure - 10-15", iirc)

Yes, then there is the poorly drilled barrels. I personally don't care for the painting style. I perfer the style posted in Jungle Themed Tyranids, the Ultra Marines he posted are amazing!!

There is something odd in the photos of this one, the Terminator and the base just don't quite appear connected. But it could just be me.

disclaimer, I did not say it's bad just not my choice in style, and the poorly drilled barrels just ruined it for me altogether.

Poorly drilled bolter barrels? They're slightly off center, hardly a reason to call them "poorly drilled."

Given the precision and quality of the rest of the work they are poorly drilled.
It's a bit like calling out a professional footballer when they miss a penalty.
Edit: I'm sure that the painter/modeller would agree that they could have been done better?

Okay, they aren't perfect but poor is still a pretty strong adjective to use.

His description of the miniature says he painted it "just for fun." Let that sink in for a minute... he grabbed a random model that was laying around and painted it, presumably out of boredom, and that is what he came up with. To split hairs over how the bolter holes are drilled is just asinine.

Yes, poorly drilled, kind of like when you see a well painted model and you see the seams of the kit... ruins it for me.

I'm gonna go ahead and take solace in the fact it's not just me then.

The photography certainly helps which is often something many of us don't do, however even then it's still a stunning piece in it's own right, I'll never be a fan of NMM though.

On a philosophical note, what does it mean that a really good painter shows off his stuff like this and half of us think it looks Photoshopped? I thought it looked P-shopped too.

Could that effect be mitigated by shooting in a different environment?

Not really, the only thing to get right when drilling barrels is to get them straight and in the right place!
Edit: And perhaps not to go too deep or shallow with the holes.

It's definitely not Photoshopped. There are a fair few amazing artists out there that can paint to that type of standard. If you guys are interested in looking at more examples, head over to www.puttyandpaint.com and browse through the images there. You could also look at the top artists on www.coolminiornot.com

If your interested in improving your own painting then I'd recommend forums such as www.platoonbritannica.com and creating a WIP thread so that you can get some good feedback on your work and how to improve!

I'm not an amazing painter myself, but I have a website with a contact form built into it, and I'm always happy to help or answer any questions regarding painting myself, so just get in touch! www.miniature-studio.com

Regards.

I'm thinking the pic has a little bit of photographic post-processing, which makes it pop out. Something in the contrasts and hues that gives me that impression.

That being said, I don't think there's anything added in photoshop - just a ton of careful blending going on. It's possible to get a mini to this quality, just takes a lot of hours to build up the layers. Obviously these are GD-level works, I think someone mentioned he uses 30-40 working hours for a competition mini.

i didnt notice the barrels until you mentioned it, even then i had to look for awhile.

if i was going to be critical i would say i think the OSL is too strong around the eyes and the color reminds me of girls eyeshadow. the yellow is also too vibrant for me but i guess imperial fists are supposed to look like that. atleast it's not as bad as some bright blue smurfs.

but then considering how long it would take to paint all those black cracks then highlight them with an even smaller line of white nevermind the countless other insane details he's painted i should probably just shut my mouth.

It's both.

You make a great piece, you photograph it then you adjust the levels in Photoshop in order to get a photo closer to reality, because frankly, it's hard to get the actual feel of a miniature without a bit of post processing. it's not even far-fetched that the background could have been photoshopped in (I think it really is). But I will give a guess that it looks like that more or less in real life.

Actually, I can see how it could be considered "bad taste".

To ask the question is almost an insinuation that there is fraud at best, and accusation at worst.

It all has to do with implied tone - which to be honest, is very difficult in text (welcome to the internet).

Of course, different viewers then must filter the subject throught their own filters, which may be biased as well based upon their experiences.

A less...."bad taste" form of the post might be...
"This is an amazing model, I am stunned that someone could get this level of detail without photoshop". Although eventhat could be seen as planting the suggestion.

Note, to clarify MY tone, I am NOT accusing you of intentional douchbaggery....I am giving some third party feedback on how this could be construed as bad taste, and why.

Finally, in my own personal opinion, I would not have even considered it to be shopped, because I have seen enough minis of similar standards to accept its authenticity - but that is part of my filter....
