Heres my first finished russ. I went for a simple white/grey camo pattern that I figured might be on a mass produced vehicle like the russ. Something simple to blast on a tank in the assembly line but still effective at camo.
I tried using a blue wash for a kind of "icy" feel but im sure how well i did as its my first attempt. I may have used to dark of a blue or too much of the blue....or even both.

I toned down the blue I used on the russ for the vendetta. I think the lighter blue washing made a much better icy feel. Lascannons are magnetic for easy switchout, the other armaments are in the background of one pick. have yet to magnetize them though =[

Great work, nice and crisp. Though for the icy effect i would recommend using some ardcoat varnish either on top of the wash or just straight on. But yeah its a really nice colour scheme, well done

The russ looks great. Nice colour choice. I wouldn't use blue. In my opinion it looks off. I think that if it has been in snow all day the paint job would start to weather at some point. Maybe you could use some rust colour, because snow is water and would rust the metal.

How are you planning to paint your guardsmen?

You should be proud of that, first russ or no. Any weathering down the road?

If you want to have ice you need some texture. Get some woodland scenics snow and water and mix them so you have a nice icy slush, mix in some dirt if you want a mix of mud and snow, and apply it to the appropriate places. With just paint on the model it looks too flat, like it's been painted on in "real life".

I like the overall paint scheme, I just think that the tank could do with a bit more weathering.

Looks good.

I'd agree, though, to look great it needs some gunk. Perhaps some wash or weathering powder or something. It sort of looks like it just got off the assembly line and hasn't gotten into its first fight yet.

Thanks for all the great advice!
@littlehorus My guardsmen are going to be a similar color scheme. white fabric with washes to bring out the folds and grey armor with lighter grey highlights (thats the plan anyway...to be seen whether I can pull it off)

for the snow/ice look would scenics snow work with watered down pva glue to get icy/slushy look or does it have to be straight water?

I was honestly trying to avoid mud as its a completely frozen world and I actually like the "cleaner" look. but rust could be a could idea as long as i didnt overdo it. Where would be good places to have some light rusting? weathering is completely new to me X.x

Also is there any cheaper alternatives to the pigments and woodland scenic type stuff? saving money is always a bonus...i heard about baking soda and white glue for snow so I tried that on my valkryie base. I think it came out ok. Something like that for rust?

For weathering you can just use google or buy the imperial armour painting masterclass volume 1. Both are full of usefull tips and tricks.

I wouldn't use baking soda. I heard it tends to turn a bit yellowish over time. I used galeforce9 snow with some pva glue and water.

Here's a good example: http://www.coolminiornot.com/210533?browseid=6956971 . Alternatively, there's a nice winter Malcador diorama in IA:Model Master class vol 1, and vol 2 has an entire snow table and some tips for painting the vehicles.

PVA glue will give it a whiter color. Water effect will give it a slushy wet look, which is what you probably want.

Then just use the snow, no dirt added to the mix. But you still need some texture, ice and snow on a tank are going to be a very obvious layer of blobs on top of the surface, not just a change in color. You'll have bits of snow stuck in the recesses and the tracks, ice on anywhere that snow might melt and re-freeze, etc.

Where would be good places to have some light rusting?

Any exposed metal, obviously (thought NOT on pistons that slide in and out and scrape the rust off, those should be polished and oily). Any paint chips where you've gone down to bare metal. Any rivet/screw heads where you'd have a bit of exposed metal around the hole and streaks of rust washing down along the side of the tank.

Also is there any cheaper alternatives to the pigments and woodland scenic type stuff?

Nope. Woodland scenics IS the cheap stuff. You can get "build an entire army and terrain" levels of stuff for less than a single package of the equivalent from GW. Which is funny because most of the specialized gaming stuff is just re-packaged woodland scenics anyway.
