I’ve been thinking about this off and on for a while and I think there is some great potential for a fun game for both sides. The way I see it played would be like this:

Last Stand

Purpose: The defender is to survive as long as possible against the attacker’s increasing waves of assaults.

Players: 2

Defender: 3 HQs – Totaling up to 600 pnts or less; no restrictions on Army however choices Must come from the HQ section of respective Codexes; Special Characters are allowed
Attacker: Starts with 2 Troop choices of a single codex; Minimum squads, upgrades allowed for squad members only (Example: a Tactical squad would enter with 5 models and would be allowed a melta/plasma/flamer but the Sergeant would not be allowed upgrades, this assumes that the Sergeant was included in the base cost of the squad); additional waves will increase the number of squads available*

Special Rules:

1. Independent Characters may NOT join squads
2. All Independent Characters have the Aura of Command Ability
a. Aura of Command
i. All Moral/Pinning checks taken within 3” of the character are based off that character’s leadership unless the model(s) taking the test would be higher
ii. Any ability that would transfer to the character’s squad (Fearless, Hit and Run, Night fight, etc.) in transferred to any friendly unit within 3” of the character including Look Out Sir tests (must be eligible: Cannot LoS a wound to a Vehicle)
iii. Any Aura like abilities already in existence (Example: Synapse on a Warrior Prime) are increased by 3”
3. If, at some point, the Attacker gains access to an Independent Character from the HQ section then they are only allowed “generic” choices however they wish to build them within 150 points. Special Characters are Not permitted
4. The Defending player is allowed to embark multiple units into the Bastion
5. The Defending player does NOT have access to Bodyguards (Example: Tyrant Guard)
6. For the Defender, all three HQs are considered Battle Brothers regardless of Codex
7. Special Rules for the Defender’s Primary Detachments do Not apply (Example: Defender does not use the Warp Storm Table) this DOES apply to the Attacker
8. Special Exception: Chaos Boon only applies to Independent Characters Slain
9. Challenges are NOT used.
10. Defending Characters all have Eternal Warrior

Features:

1. Board is 4’ x 4’
2. 25% terrain as per agreed on between players
3. 1 Bastion with an Icarus Lascannon set up in the middle of the board
4. 2 Objectives located 12” from opposite corners
5. Defender is allowed 2 per/turn Perks unless modified as described below

Objectives:

Objectives have 3 states:
1. Defender Held
2. Neutral
3. Attacker Held

Taking Objectives:
1. Model(s) must be in Base to Base contact with an Objective at the end of its/their movement phase
2. Model(s) must announce they are attempting to seize the Objective and remain in base to base contact with the Objective until the beginning of its/their next turn

a. This changes the Objective state by one step

3. While attempting to take an objective a Model(s) may take no action and is automatically hit in Close Combat

Each Objective held by the Defender add +1 to the number of per/turn Perks for the Defender / Each Objective held by the Attacker reduces -1 to the number of per/turn Perks for the Defender

Perks:

The Defending player is allowed to choose two* abilities / turn from the list below:

1. Wellspring – Heals one (1) Wound per turn to one (1) of the Defender’s Models up to their Maximum Starting Wounds
2. Superior Ammunition – Increases the Range of their Ranged Weapons by 6” and increased their STR by +1
3. Communication Relay – The Defender’s Aura of Command is increased to 9”
4. Repair Servitors – The Defender may repair one Hull Point on the Bastion or Repair one Wound on the Icarus Lascannon. Additionally, the Defender may charge two choices to repair the Icarus Lascannon from Zero Wounds to 1 Wound or Repair the Bastion to 1 Hull Point. Lastly, should one of the Defenders be a Vehicle (Example: Bjorn or Sableclaw) the servitors will repair one Hull point OR Damaged system (Example: Weapon Destroyed/Immobilized)
5. Frag Grenade Launchers – Defenders may launch an assault from the Bastion as though it had the Assault Rule

Scoring:

1. Defender receives 11 pnts – the current round of the wave once all attackers are eliminated. Each wave’s score is cumulative (Example: Wave 1 = 7 pnts, Wave 2 = 6 pnts, Wave 3 = 2 pnts – Total score = 15 pnts)
2. Defender Sacrifices one pnt for each resurrection of another Character

Mechanics:

Objectives begin the game in the Neutral State

Defender has the First Turn at the beginning of each Wave

Defender Resurrection: When a Defender Dies or is removed from play as a casualty place the model on its side (or use an appropriate counter)
One of the remaining Defending models may resurrect the perished companion in the same manner as taking an Objective.

Attacker Waves: The attacker begins the game as described above. For each wave beyond the first the attacker rolls a D6 and consults the chart below:

1. HQ
2. Elite
3. Troop
4. Fast Attack
5. Heavy Support
6. Re-roll

The Attacker then may choose a squad in the slot rolled. The squad must be as purchased with no additional bodies. Character upgrades are not allowed (unless they are a free upgrade) however squad upgrades are allowed. (Example: Devastators may equip heavy weapons, Chosen squads may equip special close combat weapons) Vehicles are allowed to upgrade existing weapons but are NOT allowed to add additional weapons (Example: Predators may take either the Autocannon or the TL-Las Cannon but may not take side sponsons) Characters chosen from the HQ section may purchase Wargear as they would normally be allowed, this includes relics, etc. The same would apply to any Independent Character purchased in any other section.

(NOTE: Units with a Staring Point Cost over 200 points are Restricted to one per Wave after Wave 10 and may not be used by the Attacker before that time)

The Attacker is restricted to a single codex per Wave but may choose to use a different Codex for each wave.

The Attacker enters the board by Randomly selecting a Table side for each squad. That squad then enters the game as though it were coming in from Reserves. The Attacking player may choose to reserve any squad except for the base 2 troops after the first Wave. The reserved squad may then enter from reserves beginning turn Two from a random board edge on a roll of 4+ however the Attacker may choose one squad to enter on the board edge of their choice. Subsequent rounds are rolled on a 4+ as well.

Please let me know what you think

sounds good but with the no upgrades to the Sargent rule if chapter tactics or it equivalent in other codex's allow master crafting weapons on Sargent will this still apply.

sallies all the way

"Into the fires of battle unto the anvil of war."
War-cry of the salamanders
"Vulkans fire beats in my breast with it I shall smite the foes of the Emperor."
war-cry of the firedrakes and chapter command

Also the rules on HQ attacker upgrades are less than clear, does it count as giving upgdades to the squad (being the only member in many cases) or will they have to he bare-bones (being a character)? Also, should force weapon types be rolled for to avoid tailoring? (Same for undefined power weapons). And how would upgrades on a CCS be taken, if at all (HQ choice w/multiple models base)?

Otherwise, I love it!

If you don't have to pay for it then Yes it would apply. However It would apply only to the Bolter or CCW

I wanted the attacker to have all the upgrades as normal for the choice just try to limit it from being crazy... like the Attacker shouldn't have a GK Grand Master with an Assault Cannon and an Orbital Strike for free... I had this in my previous draft... I guess I forgot to include it. I'll fix it here in a sec

On a side note: Wargey brings up an interesting point... I think the Attacker would only get the benefit if the HQ is present in the Wave. After all, it is the Character that is giving the text to the Rule

about the rule requiring a character, that isn't strictly true- Chapter Tactics is a rule for the entire detachment for C:SM, and should always apply; it is independent of any HQ character, but rather determines which (if any) SCs will be available to the army.

I'm not all that familiar with the new C:SM dex so I'll rely on you for that. But if the tactics do not rely on a character then it would be perfectly acceptable as you describe it

Another question that cropped up- would characters such as sergeants be allowed to make any free weapon swaps, or would that not be allowed (i.e. switch a SM sergeant's bolter for a chainsword, or for some bizzare reason a captain's chainsword for a bolter)?

If its free you can do it.

I'll make sure to clarify that here in a second

I have to admit to being curious as to how this would play out... I know that comment seems strange from someone who wrote the rules, but I don't get many opportunities to actually hit the tables.

So if someone does try this scenario out I would very much like to hear your experience.
