I have finally settled on my Khorne CSM list. I've managed to play test, and apart from some small tweaks I need to test, I'm starting the arduous process of putting it together. Luckily my area allows heavy proxy, as long as they see progress.

Unfortunately, I'm terrible at modelling and painting, so I'm looking for hits and tips from people. I will document the (slow) progress here. But I'm looking more for help than to show off. My first issue is the colour of the wings. I'm inking a fleshy colour but what do guys think? I have the GW ultimate paint set. So I have EVERY colour avaliable.

Thanks for reading, please help! Here's my start...

First off, good start. I like the basing and think you picked the right colors for the armor bits.

I think you want to focus on a 3 stage painting process for the armor and the skin tones. It's relatively simple to do, without getting into any techniques that are too sophisticated.

What I would do is:

1) Start with a wash to bring out the shadows

2) Highlight the major regions with the original color, at least for the red. For the armor, I would go straight to a gold color to bring out the bronzed nature.

3) Apply a brighter shade of the original color on top of that on the areas you want to have stand out.

4) Do some extreme highlighting along ridges and whatever else to make it really stand out.

This, and again great start! If you look at my Gallery, my painting technique follows this pattern pretty close. I prime white, wash with agrax earthshade, then for the purple I put the base down, wash it with the purple wash, drybrush a lighter purple, then use the original purple to fill smooth transitions. The robes are based pink, washed purple, then highlighted with the original pink to draw them back out.

Sweet, thanks guys. I'm going to throw bronze on the armour, and then wash with earth shade. I'll throw a picture on at that stage, and then start tidying and highlighting.

Ok, I've thrown some more paint on, thought I'd take another picture before I get carried away. I'll be adding some more silver and red plus layering on the rakrath flesh before everything will be washed and the highlighting will begin. I'm trying to work out what colour to start the wings, and a good leathery colour for his belt. Any thoughts welcomed!

My only real suggestion at the moment is for the red, wash it with the nightshade (blue wash) it will tone it down and make the flesh look quite sinister for you to build the highlights from. (That is what I am currently doing on the fleshy bits of my Heldrake) I have pictures of two Terrorgheists in my gallery if you want to see if their wings work for how you want to do this guy's wings. If so I can try to remember how I did them.

Ok. I was going to wash the red with earth shade as per the GW painting guide. Do you have anything that'll show me the red washed blue?

Not at the moment, only did it last night before going to bed, let it dry over night. Have not had the chance to drybrush or highlight it either but I could maybe get a picture of it this afternoon when I go home before I start working on them again.

Thanks buddy. Never finished a model of this size before, I've always been terrible at buying armies and the not painting them!

Ok, I've added some more silver. Need to add some more bronze to the axe, and paint his belt and straps. I need to then paint a base colour on his wings, layer all the bone parts up and tidy up his teeth. Then it'll be ready for an all over wash. Everything will be washed earth shade I think, other than the silver that'll be washed with oil. I've tidied up a lot of the armour, it needs more work though.

Let me know what you guys think so far, I know I'm not the neatest!

The real issue is with how thick the paint on the face is. I would dip a toothbrush in a solvent and brush it if and start over on the face. Nothing else is really THAT bad

Really? I can see most if the detail on the face? Perhaps it's the photo quality?

The flash may be taking away some of the detail, great start though, the shading really shows on the legs

Thanks dude, I'll see what I can do on the head. Maybe it is a little thick? I've got to wash it all yet, then highlight again. Then perhaps extreme highlight. Not sure, never done this sort of level of highlighting before?
